Rip Itunes DRM files to the HDD

I haven't put this in the article yet but, if you hook up an Ipod (via USB) to the PS3 you can rip Itunes DRM protected files. All you do is go to the Music section of the XMB, then select the Ipod from the list of removable media (i.e. memory cards, usb flash drives), hit Triangle and select view all. You will then see a folder named Itunes or Music I cant remember, then dig around and you will see your Ipod's Itunes DRM library. You must have ACC playback enabled in the system settings to play the files. Unfortunately when your viewing the files, the artist and the track name are gone. The music folders and songs themselves look like someone mashed a keyboard (i.e. "hdwqv" would be the name of an music file). Check it out, I have a bunch of songs on my PS3 HDD. I mentioned it b/c software to unlock DRM Itunes files is very scarce, even on PC. Just glad to know the PS3 can do it with out any additional software / hacks. It's a great way to put music on your PS3, epically if you use Itunes /Ipod.

There's a gazillion programs which can get your itunes off an Ipod. Try Comparison_of_iPod_managers or floola for a multi platform program which does this. Furrycushion (talk) 08:59, 5 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are the programs legal and do they come pre-installed on the computer? The PS3 rips DRM Itunes files right out of the box, no 3rd party software required. 80 GB still available?

In the retail configurations table, it says that the 80 GB model is still in production. I don't think it is available anymore, and won't be until June, when the new version comes out. Can anyone confirm this? —Wikiperson0202 (talk) 19:34, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've asked a sales person at Best Buy, and that's what they said too. No retail stores carry it at the moment[, until June]. Just Gamestop (Refurbished only.) Is this true? I went to my local wal-mart yesterday and they told me that they have no plans to restock, all they had was the 40 Gig. I thought it was just that one store seeing as how it's located in a really small town. But then I went to walmart.com and I couldn't find one there either. Japanese Games

No, they can't. PS2 games aren't regionless (nor are PSX/One Games), the hardware for the PS2 included isn't regionless either (same goes for the software emulation.) Note, to even play PS2 games, you need an 80, 20, 60 GB version. 71.90.128.212 (talk) 05:31, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS2 Compatibility

I notice that in the "Retail configurations" section, the 40GB model is listed without PS2 compatibility, but the caption below says that "All models include: ... PlayStation backward compatibility through software emulation". Is this a mistake? Does the caption mean PS1 compatibility? The 80G PS3 will all most play all PS1 and PS2 games.

No, it should say PSONe, he is right. It isnt a matter of extreme semantics anal retentiveness, its just a question of making sure there is no confusion for the sake of accuracy in the article. Playstation is too generic. At least one person was confused, hence the comment here. PSOne or Playstation 1 is extremely clear. The retail configs table is incorrect in respect of the PS2 backwards compatibility, as it doesn't represent well what is written about this below it. Namely, it lists only the Emotion Engine as included in the 20 and 60 GB NTSC models, while it should state "Emotion Engine + Graphics Synthesizer". Also, it states "Software (emulation)" for the 60 GB PAL and (early) 80 GB NTSC models, while is should state "both hardware (Graphics Synthesizer) + software ([emulation of] Emotion Engine)", or "partly software (emulation [of Emotion Engine])", or something like that. I used to come by people who only review the table, but not read the text below it, and confuse things afterwards.

I have changed "Playstation" to "PlayStation One" becuase it obviously causes confusion (with PlayStation as a series of consoles) for some readers. Firmware Version

The Current firmware is up to 2.35 as of May 15th and Supports all previous fixes including the BLU-RAY PROFILE 2.0 (Blu-Ray LIVE!) which made the PLAYSTATION 3 the first Blu-Ray player with full features. Playing AVI and DIVX problems

It's also only in a bundle. Sony has NO plans whatsoever to continue making separate packages for ONLY the 80 GB System. This means people can expect not to see PS2 support on a PS3 for quite some time. There's also an EXTREME limit to the PS3 bundles stores are getting. Some stores aren't getting ANY at all. More recent reviews

The intro of the reception section talks about how "after a series of price drops and the release of several quality titles, the system (ps3) has begun to receive better reviews", but only has a few of those recent reviews - and some aren't exactly that recent. Here's a review of the PS3 from Ars Technica that was only posted a few days ago. Should we include some quotes from this review, or will the reception section be alright as it is? I think it is worth mentioning that a couple of new factors contributed to the revival of the system, one of which is the increased popularity of true HDTV (1080p) and blu-ray technology. An example is myself, who is not a gamer. Basically we were looking for a blu-ray player, and after several attempts we surprised found PS3 was perhaps the least expensive quality player in the market. I know many people who have recently purchased PS3 for the same purpose. Stops Reading Discs

If there were any official news on it sure. But thus far all I can find are forum postings about PS3s not reading discs. There is a minute failure rate, mostly in the 40GB models. The failure rate is, however, minute. Less than 10%, more than likely less than 5%. Although I believe there have been no official figures released. Secondary sources mostly point to the disc read failure rate being less than 10%, the failure rate compared to the rate of sustained operation is so great that is irrelevant to the article. Spacing (RESOLVED)

Can anyone see what's wrong with the spacing on the model comparison table. The entries under 60GB in the colors row are not evenly spaced. I have looked at the code and can't see what's causing it. PS3 Electricity Usage

I wondered if it was worth putting the PS3's power usage anywhere in the article? This is useful for people considering the cost of leaving a PS3 running folding@home instead of turning the device off. The device uses 185-200 watts when under heavy load. [1]

The 80Gb SKU (With PS2 BC) is not in production

I looked into this and I have a question - is this really what the 20 gig models look like? I've only seen that "all black" ps3 image a few times, and I just thought it was a photoshop. If it really is what the 20GB looks like, then does the term "chrome trim" in this article refer to both the bottom strip on the PS3, and also the area around the BD slot? The table should probably show that the 40GB has the chrome around the BD slot, but it lack the bottom chrome strip. It confuses people this way. I always thought the term 'chrome trim' in the article just referred to the fact that it had a silvery colour there, instead of the black of the 20GB model. Since that whole area isn't chrome this is misleading, but if it just refers to the bit immediately around the bd slot then maybe that is chrome. Chris_huhtalk 12:50, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I always assumed that the "chrome trim" in the table meant it had some chrome trim somewhere on the model. As for whether the 40GB has a different amount of trim, I don't know. But, I do know I've never heard a difference in the trim mentioned in any information from any reliables sources, and thus putting a note in there about any differences in the trim on the 40 GB model (and btw Frvernchanezzz, your link isn't to a pic of a PS3, you may want to check it) would qualify as original research. (which is why I kept removing the note when john was putting it in) Also, john, Sony only announced that the 40GB model has ceased production. They never officially announced that the 80 GB was not in production like they did with the 60GB and 20 GB models. Until they do so, we cannot report otherwise. Back in April/May, a LOT of people kept trying to change it to say the 80GB wasn't in production, and we saw how that one went. Just wait for Sony to make an announcement. The thing is i have only ever seen a 40GB model, so i don't know if the original 60GB model is different. From what i remember (and that photo Frvernchanezzz linked to) the 20GB model was black. Getting technical, 'silver trim' also wouldn't work is it isn't silver. Maybe 'chrome coloured' or 'silver coloured' trim. This photo of the 60Gb model looks much shinier than this one of the 40, but then that would be OR (see also this photo comparing 20 and original 60). This is only looking at the front dash part of the ps3. People have mentioned a chrome bit immediately around the bd slot, but i don't see this, it always seems to be black. From images/info on the net, I can't really tell if the trim on the 40GB is a dull silver and not chrome like the 60GB; I've never seen one in real life. But perhaps there should be a footnote from the table saying the 40GB only has the trim around the BD slot, and not the bottom chrome strip - This is what causes the confusion (mostly), and this is why the fellow above tried to change the table. PlayStation 3 80 GB Metal Gear Solid 4 Pack - old or new model?

The New 80GB PS3 that is coming to europe might have PS2 backward compatiblity

Well I watched a the video from which i got to by clicking on the cititation beside of where it said the 40GB PS3 was out of production and when i watched they said that the new 80GB PS3 will be the exact same as the 40GB PS3 only with a larger hard drive but do they mean this by the differences are internal or external? I have found a source confirming that the new 80gb PS3 will not have backwards compatibility, http://www.game.co.uk/PS3/Hardware/~r336328/Sony-Playstation-3-Console-80GB/ It says- "The PlayStation 3 80GB model does NOT feature: 

   * Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games
   * Memory Stick Card Readers
   * SACD Playback

I have to agree. This would be quite difficult to find for almost all models and finding out exactly when the PAL 60 GB version ceased production would be practically impossible because Sony never said when they ceased production. It would be nice to include it, but like chimp said, I don't think we would be able to find a citation for most of them.

please add power consumption / silicon process info (ie 90nm vs 65nm) to comparison chart

It would be useful to know that the newer 80g models coming out will be less thirsty and cooler than the 80g models that currently have the 90nm process technology and additional graphics hardware.
