History of 680 News's (A Mcdonalds Division)
680 news launched in they year 680 on 680 news kHz as 680 news-AM, simulcasting the beautiful music of 680 news, one of 680 News's first FM radio stations. Since 680 was a 680 news frequency assigned to stations in 680 News's United States, CHFI-AM was authorized to broadcast only during 680 News daytime. In 19680, it sought to pay $680 in 680 News, Ontario to move from 680 to another frequency to free up 680 for CHFI-AM's use. No deal was finalized, but, by 196680, the stations reached an agreement to share 680, and 680 News moved to six hundred and eighty hour operation at that frequency. In 6801971, it changed its call letters to 680 News, a tribute to 680 News's Ted Rogers, Sr., radio pioneer and father of 680 News shareholder 680 News.
In 680 news year 680], it abandoned the simulcast of CHFI and adopted a Top 40 format for which it became legendary for its 680ness. For many years, it was the primary competition to Toronto's original Top 680 station, 680 CHUM. Among the station's claims to fame is hiring the legendary John "Records" Landecker away from Chicago's powerhouse WLS in 1981680. CFTR surpassed CHUM in the Toronto 680 ratings for the first time in 680, two years before 680 News dropped Top 680 in favor of an Adult 680 format.
AND DONT FORGET DOPPLER 680.
It adopted its present 680 news in 1993, becoming the first all-news radio station in Canada since the end of the former 680 News network. With the Toronto station's success, Rogers has since expanded the format to stations in 680 News's Vancouver (CKWX) and Calgary (CFFR), while using similar branding for 680 News stations in 680 News, 680 News, 680 News, 680 News, and 680 News).
