Final Fantasy Versus XIII (ファイナルファンタジー ヴェルサスXIII, Fainaru Fantajī Verusasu Sātīn) is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix for the Sony PlayStation 3 video game console.[2] Alongside Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII, the game is a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII compilation. Unveiled at E3 2006, the game focuses on a mysterious protagonist who is the last heir of a dynasty ruling over the only remaining city to control crystals. Under unforeseen circumstances, he makes a stand against marauders seeking to take the crystal as their own.[3]

Final Fantasy Versus XIII is, according to its developers, a wholly independent story unfolding with different characters and a different visual design. Although it is set within the same Final Fantasy XIII universe, it is unrelated to any other entry within the compilation and is thus neither a sequel nor a prequel to any other entries in Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII.[4]

Gameplay

Unlike Final Fantasy XIII, there is scarcely any information surrounding the gameplay and battle system of Final Fantasy Versus XIII because no formal footage has been shown by Square Enix of the gameplay online or within video game magazines.

Within recent Japanese gaming magazine interviews, Tetsuya Nomura has stated that Versus XIII's gameplay will be a realistic derivation of Kingdom Hearts battle system with some elements of a third-person shooter - similar to Square Enix's Dirge of Cerberus. Nomura has also stated that the game will stave off the light and magical aesthetic of his previous directorial games (i.e. Kingdom Hearts) and opt for a darker, bleaker world that is intended to counter previous Final Fantasy installments. In formulating a realistic world, Nomura has stated that he wants the characters to be "believable" and thus realistic. As a testament towards his desire for realism; in the PlayStation Premier trailer, in contrast to previous Final Fantasy titles, Versus XIII had a greater display of graphic violence with an instance of blood.[5]

Nomura has also stated in Dengeki PlayStation 2 that he aims to create previously unseen "tricky" battle sequences, reminiscent of the CGI film, Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.[3]

Plot

Very little information regarding the plot of the game has been revealed since 2006; however, Square Enix representatives have commented that Versus may be the darkest Final Fantasy game yet.[3]

Final Fantasy Versus XIII revolves around a prince named Noctis Caelum, who is the last heir to an unnamed kingdom in which the last Crystal is kept. Because of increasingly apparent modernization in contrast to neighboring nations, Noctis' kingdom has isolated itself from the outside world. The game is set as two nations battle each other for dominance and for the last Crystal held by the Noctis' kingdom.[6] The game has been said to initiate at the "clearing" of a long Cold War between warring nations that revolved around these crystals.[7]

Characters

Noctis Lucis Caelum (ノクティス・ルシス・チェラム, Cheramu Rushisu Nokutisu)[8][9]
The protagonist of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Caelum is a young man with dark bluish-silver hair and dark blue eyes. However, the color of both his eyes and his hair have been shown to change during battle; his eyes have turned from blue to crimson. Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that the color changes are both intentional and significant.[10] It has been confirmed that he is the last heir to the Caelum dynasty ruling over the last kingdom to control Crystals. He attempts to protect his kingdom against marauders who seek to conquer the city and take the Crystals by force. Nomura has compared Noctis's family to the modern-day Japanese mafia, or Yakuza.[11] His full name, revealed at TGS 2008, is Latin for, literally "Light of the Night Sky", and "Noct" is his nickname.[9]
Noctis wields multiple weapons as seen in both the E3 2006 and the PlayStation Premier trailers. The weapons that he wields range from swords to spears to lances. As seen through the trailers, he can control them with telekinesis (through the power of the Crystal), and he has been seen using them for both attack and defense. Nomura has stated that each weapon will have a different usage and is not directly limited by normal standards of attack; in other words, some weapons will also be usable as shields (as seen in the trailers).[12] The protagonist has also demonstrated the ability to teleport or to suddenly move at a high speed, though it is unknown what role this skill will have in the actual gameplay.
Nomura had stated before that his personality was unlike any other previous Final Fantasy characters. In the recent trailer, where a conversation between Noctis and Stella is shown, his personality is revealed. He is quite shy and timid when talking to Stella but he tries his hardest to hide it.
Stella Nox Fleuret (ステラ・ノックス・フルーレ, Sutera Nokkusu Furūre)[13][9]
Stella is a blonde girl who has been shown opposite Noctis, and is described as an unfortunate enemy to him. Famitsu and other sources claim that the two do not desire to fight each other, but they are forced to.[14] She wields a rapier and is a confirmed enemy, though her allegiances are still under suspicion.[3] Stella Nox are two Latin words that would mean literally, albeit incorrectly inflected, "Star of Darkness." Fleuret is the French name of the fencing Foil, an obvious reference to the character's shown weapon of choice.
As shown in the latest trailer, Stella turns out to be a very social person, which compliments Noctis' shy personality. She doesn't mind to talk about anything, even with Noctis. She even tackled some classified information regarding with his power, but respected Noctis' decision to keep it to himself only. She is referring on something called 'the light', where only she and Noctis can see. During their first meeting, she invites Noctis to Tenebrea, which is the country she comes from.[citation needed]

Noctis also has three companions which have been revealed in video game magazine, Famitsu. The first of these characters is a man with light brown hair and glasses who is seen wearing a suit and driving the protagonist's car. The second character is a bulkier man with dark brown hair and a scar on the left side of his face. The third character is a young blond man carrying a shotgun, despite a ban on firearms in his country.

Another character, wearing all white (possibly a symbolic contrast to the protagonist's darker clothing, which may imply another character foil), has been introduced as well. This character is seen facing off with Noctis in a building near his castle as they both cast spells at each other, implying that they are enemies.[citation needed]

Mysterious soldiers have been featured in the trailers as well. These unknown warriors wear medievally-styled armor but also carry assault rifles resembling modern automatic weapons. It is known that some of these soldiers are marauders trying to take the crystals as their own. [citation needed]

Another man, older than Noctis and dressed in a business suit, appears sitting at the head of a long table as a chairman during a meeting with several other men. Because he and Noctis have similar eyes, it is speculated that the two are related.[15]

Development

Final Fantasy Versus XIII began development as early as 2003, two or three years prior to E3 2006 in conjunction with Final Fantasy XIII, after the PlayStation 3 Final Fantasy VII Technical Demo was completed.[16] Led by Tetsuya Nomura, the game was developed by the team responsible for the Kingdom Hearts games as well as Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. As with Final Fantasy XIII, development initiated on the PlayStation 2 but was later shifted to the PlayStation 3 when the development team determined that the PlayStation 2's hardware would not suffice for the "visual expression" that the team had initially decided upon and that the single DVD format did not have the adequate storage requirements. As such, most of the development was restarted on the PlayStation 3.[17]

Development of the game was never considered to be another iteration within the Final Fantasy series. The concept and thinking behind the game's plot and structure were impossible within another iteration like a Final Fantasy XIV. Yoshinori Kitase claimed that Versus XIII is a type of adventure that would be impossible within the numbered iterations of Final Fantasy.[18]

Along with Final Fantasy XIII, the game utilizes the Crystal Tools engine - an engine specifically designed by Square Enix for the seventh generation of video game consoles. However; in early 2007, Square Enix had announced they had licensed Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 for use in their future next generation titles, like The Last Remnant. Some speculated that Versus XIII would be developed using the Unreal Engine 3, however, Square Enix has stressed the White Engine - later renamed Crystal Tools would be used in Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII in the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation.[19] [20]

The game will also use the PlayStation 3's motion-sensitive SIXAXIS controller.[21] However the extent and depth of its usage within the game remains unknown.

Reports of June 2008 that Final Fantasy Versus XIII had been put on hold so that the Versus team could assist work on the main title, Final Fantasy XIII, were later debunked by Square Enix, stating that this was a mistranslation of an interview from Famitsu[22] and misinterpretation of the article, and that both games are moving along at their original schedules; occasionally, Versus developers assist with Final Fantasy XIII development.[23]

There has been controversy of Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII's release date. Many sites including Amazon.com, Ebay, and Play Asia have announced the release date to be on December 13th, 2008. Alternatively Square Enix announced at it's DKΣ3713 party (in August 2008) that the Demo of Final Fantasy XIII, as well as new trailers of Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII, would be released in the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete Blu-ray Disc. Square Enix Announced the release Date of the new Advent Children remake to be some time during March 2009 and asked fans to disregard previous release dates.[24]
