Some artistic bird pictures.

Dunno if you are aware of these Von Wright images on commons, but i personally happen to think they are very cool. (But then, I am most definitely biased, since I learned the names of all the birds in the book before I learned to talk in sentences, by these self same images.) -- Cimon Avaro; on a pogostick. Requesting protection on a page

Hi, recently the page Naruto: Clash of Ninja (series) has been vandalized often by these same ip addresses. Since that Twinkle tool to undo damages does not work for me for some reason, I constantly have to undo it one by one. Also I'm assuming your an administrator, so I'm hoping you could give it protection from IP address edits. Thanks.DragonZero (talk) 23:28, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Surface Unsigned

I can't understand why you deleted a page I wrote, wiki Surface Unsigned. This music festival is the largest of its kind in the UK and information about it (NOT advertsising) is in the public interest. You described as a non-notable event. Anyone in the music business would certainly not describe it as a non-notable event. BBC radio is involved with the festival. My article was not an advertisement, it was public information. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the music business? Thousands of bands take part in the festival each year, and an unbiased description of it is necessary. I would like you to reconsider your deletion, or maybe pass the page on to someone with more knowledge of the music business. Is it necessary for me to add details of why the festival is significant and noteworthy? - I didn't do this in the article, merely gave an account.JohnDTraynor (talk) 11:03, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your reply, "This was also deleted by another admin previously. " That was an entirely different article written a year ago with which I have no connection.

"Advertising - encyclopaedias do not give ticket prices, deposit, text costs or prize money" It is very clear that I am not advertising. It is an acoount, a description. Are you suggesting that every mention of the cost of something anywhere is an advertisement?

The other bits you complained about can be changed easily JohnDTraynor (talk) 12:19, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Over this weekend, the above page was marked for speedy deletion, and it was speedily deleted without giving any option of discussion on the page via the talk page. My immediate problem is that I don't have a copy of the original page, and Wikipedia doesn't allow normal users to view history. I understand that this page can be "userfy"'ed, so that work can continue on this page. If you could do this for me, I would appreciate it. Minfrin (talk) 15:57, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the support. Do you have any idea what I should do about the 2005 Mayoral election results which do not appear to be on the public record, but that I got the Board of Elections to email me the results for?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 22:31, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You sort of gave me the opposite response from the other opinion. You can see what I did in the article. Basically anyone can contact the Board of Elections for the result I got so it is publicly available. At last check I had three supports and a positive image review. I hope it closes in 10 days or so so I can get Saxbe fix up at WP:TFAR in time for a March 4 100th anniversary.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 07:19, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
While I have a captive audience, I thought I would ask do you prefer the choice of main images or should I swap with the one of him at the podium?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 03:52, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean by "This is the guy"? Joke???--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 07:25, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't mind, could you return and comment on the FAC discussion page about the 2005 Buffalo Mayoral Results sourcing. This seems to be the only outstanding issue.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 03:55, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have a new reviewer that wants a lot of negative stuff added claiming the article is nearly a hagiography. He wants most stuff unrelated to his political career removed. I have never had a review that wanted all personal stuff except a negative controversy removed before. Please watch the discussion and comment as appropriate.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 16:44, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bensecs

Thank you for deleting my images, which you rightly state appeared to infringe the copyright held by RestoredPrints.com. We had clearance with RestoredPrints and they had agreed to amend their copyright terms and the copyright notice (since now done). They were too slow and you were, perhaps, a little too quick. Please revisit the copyright page at www.restoredPrints.com/copyright.htm to see the change before you delete any further images.

I would like you please also to take on board that an encyclopaedia (correctly spelt!) page relating to a bird is not the same as a field guide and should include all important and relvant facts and figures as well as the usual field guide description, rarity, habitat and recognition data. Hence it should include cultural, religious and other facts and influences. It happens that the images from Audubon and Lewin were the most important landmarks in ornothological illustration (Lewin in Europe and Audubon in America) and as such should be available to readers. I agree that the gratuitous inclusion of images for the sake of decorating the page should be prevented, but not at the expense of denying readers access to the most important ones.

Again thank you for your attention to my additions all of which I will double check to ensure that the corrected copyright statements appear. Your dedication, frankly astounds me, but due to folk like you Wikipedia is a worthwhile project that deserves everyone's wholehearted support.Bensecs (talk) 00:26, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

TIMS page deletion

Hello, You have deleted my page for a second time, although I have addressed the issues mentioned previously. The second reason for deletion is "(text dump from unspecified source, spamming, full of unreferenced claims) ". which are not true. The new text is my own words to resolve the copyright issue. It is not spamming, it is describing a world reknown product and methodology which is of interest within the teaching field. There are no unproven claims..all the information can be verified by reviewing the products own website. I am new to wikipedia and so are still learning about do's and dont. How about some suggestions rather than just deleting. Can you please suggest changes or re-instate the page. Thank you, I realise reviewing wiki pages is a thankless task. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Emona-tims (talkcontribs) 01:24, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Complaint: Deletion of 'Swan Shopping Centre Eastleigh

I was very disappointed to see that you have deleted this page without any warning or opportunity for me to object or rewrite the article. This appears to be against the Deletion Policy of not demolishing the house before it has been built. You say that the page was "blatant advertising" but it was not; I have no interest in or reason for promoting this organisation and if you had actually bothered to look at my other articles, you will see that I have created a number of articles contributing information to this project.

Deleting people's pages without warning when all they're trying to do is improve the content of this great project will only discourage people from contributing. You did not even have the courtesy to notify me what the problem was or to give me the chance to reword the article in a way that would have satisifed you.

I would ask you to restore the page please immediately so that myself or other editors can improve this page which is about a shopping centre in England, a subject that is obviously of significance as it has its own category.

Please can you also tell me why you deleted the page in such a hurry without giving me the chance to sort it out? I was under the impression from WP:Deletion that Admins had to discuss an article before it could be deleted. This appears to be a breach of the guidelines and if the situation is not resolved satisfactorily (ie leave my pages alone unless there's a good reason to delete them) then I will be taking the matter further via the various channels mentioned in the deletion policy.

Thank you.GaryReggae (talk) 14:01, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for putting the text in my Sandbox, I have taken out the more extravagant bits (sorry, I got a bit carried away while writing but didn't intend for the article to be seen as advertising as it isn't that) and recreated the page. Please have a look and let me know if it is acceptable now. I know there are not any sources yet but I was looking through the 'List of Shopping Centres in England' page and creating a page for those that were on the list but didn't have an article if I knew enough about them to create one - even if they're just stubs for the time being. Maybe not the most notable topic there is but the fact that articles exist for a lot of the centres on the list that are of an equivalent size to the one mentioned inspired my idea to fill in some of the gaps.
Thanks anyway. GaryReggae (talk) 15:02, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Knouse Foods

May I ask why you call it blatant advertising when Knouse Foods IS one of the biggest producers of apple products in the U.S., if not the world? Hello Jimfbleak. At yesterday I wrote article about AskedWeb. The article was been deleted with label "advertising". I didn't advertise it. I liked Askedweb web-site and want to write about it. The askedweb contain very much very nice articles about dogs and other helpful info.

Jimfbleak, I novice at wikipedia, please advice me how to I can write about the askedweb? May be you not want links to askedweb? Ok. I can write with no any external links.

Hello, I am the administrator of edwardvaughn.com. I recently recieved a email from my uncle, Ed Vaughn, saying that a friend of his had created a page on wikipedia about him. And he was interested to know if I could add pictures to it. As of a few moments ago, I was trying to do just that, and I refreshed it to see it had been deleted. My question is, 1.) How do we (Ed & I) go about creating a page about him here?, and 2.) what is required in order for there to be no problem with copyrights, etc.? If you would reply via e-mail, I would appreciate your help!. My address is skybluesea@nc.rr.com and my name is Glenn Clark 71.77.129.34 (talk) 14:17, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All sorts of problems here
  • The text is copied from the website and is therefore a copyright violation. If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:
    • If you have permission from the author leave a message explaining the details on the article's talk page and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
    • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at the talk page with a link to where we can find that note.
    • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on the article talk page.
    • Alternatively, you may create a note on your web page releasing the work under the GFDL and then leave a note at the article talk page with a link to the web page details.
    • Otherwise, you are encouraged to rewrite this article in your own words to avoid any copyright infringement.
  • the article did not provide independent verifiable sources that he meets the notability guidelines.
  • It is not written in a neutral encyclopaedic style, it is full of hagiographic and POV phrasing and unsupported claims for his merits

Copmanthorpefc

As a first article I am dissapointed that it has been removedcwhen it was clearly only partially complete. In terms of notability, the piece would have a strong emphasis on FA development and disabled athletes and as the club in question is not a commercial enterprise I do not agree about advertising. There are hundreds of sports clubs on wikipedia who should also be deleted if following this criteria. I feel you have been harsh and given the number of clubs on wikipedia, also inconsistent in your approach when deleting this page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.105.198.213 (talk) 14:41, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not a matter of being harsh, since it is copyright material we cannot legally carry it anyway.

  • Alternatively, you may create a note on your web page releasing the work under the GFDL and then leave a note at the article talk page with a link to the web page details.
  • Otherwise, you are encouraged to rewrite this article in your own words to avoid any copyright infringement or neutrality issues and add references to establish notability. jimfbleak (talk) 15:04, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tree Sparrow

Hi Jim, I had to do some research on the Tree Sparrows in India. It turns out that authors K.S.R. Krishna Raju and Trevor D. Price only note the following:

"During the banding session of the B.N.H.S. bird migration study project at Lammasinghi in the Visakhapatnam section of the Eastern Ghats in April-May year 1972, we obtained a few specimens of the Tree Sparrow Passer montanus (Linns.). This is an interesting record as the distribution of the species according to the SYNOPSIS and FAUNA is northern parts of India along the Himalayan ranges east to Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan and south to Assam and Manipur, etc. The present record is the first from the E. ghats and adds northern Andhra to its known range. The population of tree sparrows at Lammasinghi is more or less localised and the male specimen we preserved for record was in breeding condition as evinced by the enlarged gonads. Two species of sparrows (Passer domeesticus and P. montanus) co-exist at Lammasinghi and it is desirable to study their ecology."

I now need to figure out how PC Rasmussen decided that they were hybridizing and need some details on what Clements really says about it being introduced in the Eastern Ghats.

Shyamal (talk) 05:10, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No reason to doubt Rasmussen. But I feel quite irritated that the original source is not cited, perhaps she has access to specimens from there that indicate hybridization. The more irksome thing is that no one in India can do such research themselves, hardly any libraries which have the required materials, inaccessible collections etc. Part of the motivation for me to be here. Shyamal (talk) 06:51, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Let me see if I can get further info from the local mailing lists. Shyamal (talk) 06:53, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the Yahoo tip and I am not able to see the black spots on the cheek of Madonna's sparrow either. I am in India, there are now several birding email lists and they are quite local although the India cake has not been sliced very uniformly. More birders in the economically richer parts and too few in the bird rich areas :( Shyamal (talk) 08:27, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Agree that the line might sound ambiguous. According to that paper the Pegu Sparrow and Spanish Sparrow are closer to the House Sparrow than the Tree Sparrow is to the House Sparrow. Shyamal (talk) 11:23, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Refs

Hi Jim: Just wondering (as I'm getting near the point where I'll be ready to nominate Red-throated Diver for GA/FA) about the need to reference species name synonyms. Shyamal found me a load of synonyms several months ago, but the references are all ancient—and I'm not able to find the real names of journals which are only barely-understandable acronyms and abbreviations now. Do you think I'll need them? I've had a look through several other FA articles, and none of those seem to have sources for synonyms. MeegsC | Talk 17:54, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your response; it was the taxonomic synonyms I was wondering about. (I'm not worried about the other folk names; anything I can't find references for I'll just delete.) I know about the source mix problem from looking at other article reviews—I've been (slowly!) converting the outliers. As to why I've separated out the book sources, it's because they're for books where I've specified individual pages for details; some reviewers have complained that they don't like a big page range for in-lines because it means somebody's got to read through the whole thing to find one small nugget, so I've indicated the actual page. The only books included in the bigger section are those where I've only referenced a single page. How was the drive to London? Are the roads any better?

Help

Jim

I got what you are saying about my post re: Furious Gamer Radio. I guess I didn't fully get the rules of Wikipedia. I will wait, and someone will post when appropriate. However, the practice page I used under my user is showing up in google....and I dont want that. I tried blanking the page, but it still exists. Is there a way to delete the page or delete my whole account? I cant find the answer toeither of those questions anywhere.

To put it bluntly, I think protecting Alan Brooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke and Talk:Alan Brooke, 1st Viscount Alanbrooke is overkill in the extreme. The talkpage has been protected from IP editors when it hasn't even been edited in over a year. Where is the IP to discuss the issue, if not on the talkpage. Also, why has this been protected given that it has seen one revert in a week, and that was three days ago? I am a bit perplexed by this and think it should be undone. Patent encumbrance of large automotive NiMH batteries

Hi Jim,

I have been asked to create an article based on the Patent encumbrance of large automotive NiMH batteries section in the Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) article. Basically, the requester would like me to pull that section from the article and create a new article from it. Several editors, myself included, feel that the section does not belong in the PHEV article. The person asking for my help initially opposed pulling the section, but changed his/her mind. Before I go forward, I would like to get your guidance on the subject. I know that you are not an expert on PHEVs; I am asking for your expert advice from a Wikipedia editing perspective. Many thanks. Fbagatelleblack (talk) 04:44, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Marcia Marcus

You recently deleted the Marcia Marcus page, under WP:CSD#A7. However much of an autobiography the page was, and however messy it was, I believe there was enough assertion of notability there to have declined the speedy delete request (as I was about to do when I discovered the page had been deleted). I believe this subject deserves at least the scrutiny of an AfD discussion to allow knowledgeable users in the arts arena to ascertain whether this artist rates a Wikipedia page. Can you please restore the page, which I will then endeavor to clean up? At that point, if the notability is questioned again, it can be taken to AfD. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 13:19, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I did consider the copyright angle, but I couldn't find any source from which the copyright would have been taken. It might have been the artist's own CV that she uses for press releases and such. The formatting certainly needed cleanup, and the article needed sourcing, but a Google search shows that this artist has made some noise in the art world, and such sources could be added to the article to bolster it. I can't guarantee a positive outcome, but I think there was enough assertion of notability to have avoided a speedy delete. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 13:26, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK -- I hadn't found that in my Google search, but yes, sometimes the obvious place is the best place to look. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 13:32, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Project news
  • After a few month hiatus, we're about to start up our monthly collaboration article improvement drive again. The results of last year's collaborations were mixed. We started strongly, with three of our first four efforts reaching FA status—two of them before their months had even expired! However, things quickly tailed off after that, and none of our later efforts even reached GA status. Please vote for 2009's first collaboration, which will be chosen on Valentine's Day (14 February). If none of the existing nominations is of interest, consider adding a new one!
  • Bogbumper (talk · contribs) took up the last newsletter's challenge, and started our article about the Northern Rockhopper Penguin, which is recognized by many of the world's taxonomic authorities as being worthy of species status. This month, we're looking for someone to start an article about distraction displays—behaviors used by birds to lure or drive potential predators away from nests or young. The editor who starts this article and gets it to at least a reasonable stub class will be mentioned in next month's newsletter.

Hi Jim. The article has been at Pukeko (Porphyrio melanotus) since some smart IP decided to move it there and write on the talk page in March 2008. Can you move it to the unambiguous Pukeko? Sillyfolkboy (talk) 02:59, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know that I recently copied the above images that you uploaded to Wikipedia over to WikiMedia Commons, the Wikimedia central media repository for all free media. The image had been tagged with the {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} template. Your image is now available to all Wikimedia projects at the following location: Commons:File:A502 west of junction 1.JPG and Commons:File:A6610 Road.JPG. The original version of the images uploaded to Wikipedia has been tagged with WP:CSD#I8. During the move I changed the name of the image to better reflect Naming Conventions policy, the articles that contained the image has been updated to reflect the new names as they exists now on Commons. Cheers! --Captain-tucker (talk) 14:11, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Jim. This GA review has been on hold since 1 Feb 2009, so strictly speaking it's' had its time. However the artcile s so close it would be sill y to fail it on time. I know it's not "your" article and you only stepped in to help out, but User:Rufous-crowned Sparrow has been inactive since 31 Jan, possibly ill or on holiday. Since you know all the bird editors, can you please get 1 or 2 of them going on this. Philcha (talk) 18:04, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's Not What You Sell

The books page was made in anticipation of its release (which was on 2/5/09). We now have quite a bit more press coverage, and I can fix these errors.

How can we restore the page so that we are not starting from scratch? Nmckinney828 (talk) 21:05, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
