Haplogroup H5
AncestorH5-22[1]
DescendantsH5A,H5A1,H5A2,H5B[2]
Defining mutationsC456T, T16304C[3]

Origin

H5 is possibly the forth oldest subclade of mtDNA haplogroup H after H1, H2, and H6.[4]

The two subclades of "subclade H5" are H5* and H5A, the latter of which can be further divided into H5A1. Subclade H5 is defined by T16304C in the HVR1 region and minor subclade H5A is defined by T4336C in the control region.[5] Subclade H5 is also defined by 456 in the HVR2 region.[5]

Distribution

It is most common in Wales and the Piedmont region of Italy, where it is found at a frequency of 10-15%.[6] [7]

Subclades

Tree

This phylogenetic tree of haplogroup subclades is based on the Van Oven 2008 tree[3] and subsequent published research.
