The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, is one the emerging professional institutions in the southern metropolitan city of Chennai, India. The Law University offers a variety of specialization courses, both at the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate levels.

The University has been named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, a prominent Indian Legal Specialist of the 20th century. His Excellency, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Surjeet Singh Barnala, is the Chancellor and Prof. S. Sachidhanandam is the the Vice-Chancellor of the Law University. This differs in the tradition of the law schools having either the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court or the High Courts in the States as their Chancellors. The institution was established by the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act 1996 in the state of Tamil Nadu, keeping The National Law School of India University, Bangalore, as its model, which is the first institution fully dedicated to Legal Education in India. Apart from the strong teaching and academic research initiatives, the University has state sponsored and private Law Colleges affiliated to the system, keeping it unique from the unitary nature of the other Law Schools in the country.

The Faculty of Law at the Law University is unique in terms of the identity given to the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate education. The School of Excellence in Law was established to primarily focus on the Undergraduate education. To emphasize the need for a dedicated Teaching and Research facility at the Post-Graduate level, the University offers advanced degrees through the Post-Graduate Departments of Law. The advanced degree programs offered include Business Law, Constitutional Law & Human Rights, Intellectual Property Laws, International Law and Organizations, Environmental Law & Legal Order, Criminal Law & Criminal Justice Administration.

As the world is headed towards globalization, the University has been aggressively making progress towards meeting International Standards in the Academic Community. A major part of which is being driven by the active collaborative initiatives with leading institutions around the world in terms of MoU. The University also conducts examination in various branches of Law, and awards degrees and diplomas recognized by the Government of India, and many other countries around the world.

Although the current system encourages applicants from all over the country, the majority of the student community belong to the state of Tamil Nadu. A greater diversity in the student population is expected once the Law University starts the national drive for student recruitment.

The colleges affiliated with the Law University are:
