Planned and possible races
In January 2009, the Portuguese magazine Autosport reported the possible return of Formula One to Portugal, at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in 2011. Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has also visited the Portimão circuit. He is concerned as to how many European races the sport will have in future, and doubts that other European countries can maintain their races. It is possible the Portuguese Grand Prix will return in 2011.[12]
Ecclestone is in negotiations to bring the Argentine Grand Prix back to the Formula One calendar.[13] Although the former Grand Prix track Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez and a street circuit in Mar del Plata have been discussed, he demands a new circuit to be built.
The FFSA have a contract to host the French GP in 2011, although not at the Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours, intially the new Flins-Les Mureaux circuit, however this was scrapped and other possibilities have to be considered, for example Circuit Paul Ricard. [14][15]
Changes
Calendar changes
- The FIA has yet to confirm the calendar for 2011. Melbourne will retain the Australian Grand Prix until 2015 after signing a contract in July 2008. It is unlikely the Australian Grand Prix will become a night race as the start time for the race has only been moved back to 17:00 local time.
- The 2011 season will see the addition of the Indian Grand Prix to the F1 schedule.[26]
- In July 2009, the Bulgarian Motorcycling Foundation announced plans to secure a Bulgarian Grand Prix at a yet-to-be-constructed circuit near Pleven[27], though it was later announced that the circuit would be constructed closer to one of Bulgaria's major cities; Sofia, Varna or Burgas[28]. In September 2009 the BMF announced that the circuit would be at the old Dobroslavtsi airfield near Sofia.[29] On November 13, it was reported that plans for the race had stalled as the Bulgarian government could not provide the necessary funds to go with the land, and private investment could not be found.[30]
- In November 2009, former racer and team owner Toni Charouz announced plans for a Czech Grand Prix to potentially be held at a brand-new two and a half-mile circuit three miles from the centre of Prague.[31] The race may not take place in 2011, but some time in the new decade; its inclusion on the calendar depends on the success of a DTM event to be held once the circuit is complete.
- In December 2009, plans were unveiled for a street circuit in Rome, to be held in the city's EUR district. The event - tentatively titled the Rome Grand Prix - is schedule for an August 2012 calendar space, though promoter Maurizio Flammini admits the event could be brought forward to 2011 if the required infrastructure is built "in record time".[32]
Rule Changes
- Double diffusers are set to be banned from the start of the 2011 season[33]
Sponsor changes
- Tyre supplier Bridgestone has announced that it will not renew its contract with Formula One at the end of the 2010 season,[34] meaning a new tyre supplier will have to be found.
