David Carradine

I was rather miffed to see the reference to his role as the sword wielding El Serpiente in the TV series Queen of Swords taken out as it did just predate him getting the part of Bill in Kill Bill, a film with spaghetti western elements and maybe Tarantino saw him in it. The whole episode is on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8AQht4yC1o Have a look REVUpminster (talk) 00:31, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thankyou for putting back because I think it is relevent because before Kill Bill his career was in the doldrums. You certainly have put a lot of effort in. David Carradine is one of the most watched page by other editors because of the vandalism it suffers due to the nature of his death. Oddly Daniel Craig and Zorro also suffer in the same way.REVUpminster (talk) 12:09, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have been trying for days to figure out how to respond to your messages, and I still do not know if this is right. I ended up sending my responses to the wrong person. I wanted to thank you for the link the Queen of Swords. I enjoyed watching it. I am forever in quest of anything that David Carradine was in and I had never seen that before. As you can see, I did put it back in the narrative. We disagree about its importance, but that is okay. Someone probably disagrees with what I think is important too and it could go on forever. I have seen a bit of the nasty stuff that has been put on the page. I wish some people would grow up. Take care, --DorothyBrousseau 14:21, 26 December 2009 (UTC) PS even if this works, I still have not figured out how to start a message. I would think that it would be self-evident, but it is not.--DorothyBrousseau 14:21, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

  • To see who a user is, click on their signature name (in my case REVUpminster) which takes you to a user page where people leave info about themselves. To leave a message click on the (talk) and it takes you to the talk page. Leave a message by clicking edit at top of page and underneath last message put ==subject== write your message as if you were doing an article then finally sign with the four tildes (4x~) which will leave your signature. Some editors like to keep any conversation to one talk page as it can look disjointed. David Carradine was excellent in QoS and his interaction with Peter Wingfield was very good but that whole series is virtually unknown and it only had a few duff episodes.REVUpminster (talk) 00:22, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When you make a change to an article, please provide an edit summary, which you forgot to do before saving your recent edit to David Carradine. Doing so helps everyone to understand the intention of your edit. It is also useful when reading the edit history of the page. Thank you. ukexpat (talk) 04:37, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 15:35, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You have certainly done a lot of work. Wikipedia can be a frustrating place. You will come up against deletist editors, I am not one of them, who hide behind the excuse of original research to delete. It has happened to me and if you dare to upload an image you often have to fight your corner to keep it. Don't let it get you down but carry on.REVUpminster (talk) 01:27, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Editing

I hope you do not mind but I have added a user box to your user page. If you do not like it go to the edit page and delete. There are lists of user boxes and if you find one you like or on some one else's page copy it and paste it to your own. I do this with templates as I still do not understand how they work from scratch so I adapt existing ones.

As for citations, all this means is insert a reference. At the top of the edit box is a toolbar and the last box is insert reference. When you want to insert a reference click on this box and insert your reference. This will when saved automatically generate a reference No and your reference will appear at the bottom of the article in the references section. Hope this helps. I still have to ask for help when stuck. If you put helpme between {{}} on your talk page there are editors and administrators watching who will assist.REVUpminster (talk) 08:47, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dorothy. COI stands for conflict of interest and Wikipedia has a guideline for that - see WP:COI. In this case, the book's author was trying to insert references to his own book in multiple articles where it didn't belong. --NeilN talk to me 21:34, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Gawd-don't know what to say. I sign and then you tell me that I didn't and you're not even human. Here, I am signing--DorothyBrousseau 22:13, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Isn't technology grand? :-) On Wikipedia, to sign, you don't have to actually write out your name. Just type ~~~~. --NeilN talk to me 22:23, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dorothy, you're still not signing properly. Apologies for the bolding but I wanted you to see this. On Wikipedia, to sign, you don't have to actually write out your name. Just type ~~~~ --NeilN talk to me 04:14, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, I have been signing, but for some reason, unknown to me "it" says I'm not. Even on posts where my "signature" is plainly visible, the message that I am not signing is there. Am I the only one that can see that I actually DID sign????--DorothyBrousseau 11:43, 16 January 2010 (UTC)<---see, look, I signed. I'll do it again just in case!--DorothyBrousseau 11:43, 16 January 2010 (UTC) Boy this is fun. I could do it all day!--DorothyBrousseau 11:43, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Hmmm, have you perchance customized your signature by going into Special:Preferences? --NeilN talk to me 15:00, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No. Should I? Will that help?--DorothyBrousseau 15:21, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
I've never seen an issue like yours. Every time you type --~~~~ it should be replaced with --Dorothybrousseau (talk) (timestamp) - the talk piece should be a link to the page. So the Signature input field is blank in your Preferences page? --NeilN talk to me 15:56, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's there, really it is, only I capitalized my last name, and when I sign, I can see it. You can't see my signature? Honestly, I would rather talk about the article. But this is a problem and I have to admit, I don't know how to solve it.I'm signing now.--DorothyBrousseau 00:46, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I unchecked the box that says "sign exactly as it is above" maybe this will solve the problem. Thanks for your help.--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 00:53, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that's the problem. Since your (customized) signature doesn't contain any links to your user or talk page (required by Wikipedia policy), SineBot thinks you're not signing your posts. Unchecking the option add the links. --NeilN talk to me 01:00, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Gawd this seems a little harder than it has to be. Last night I gave up trying to add a picture to Jane Wither's page. Poor thing has no pictures on her page. I guess if it took me a month to learn how to sign my name there's no chance in heck that Jane is going to get a picture from me. Take Care.--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 01:05, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There's a lot of volunteers willing to help you out. Just ask at the helpdesk or add {{helpme}} on your talk page and a small message explaining the problem. --NeilN talk to me 01:11, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Photos

Okay, fine {{helpme}} I am proud and I didn't want to ask, but I need help resizing a photo. I added it to David Carradine's biography and it is bigger than I want to to be. I want it to fit neatly into the the "Directing career" section. --DorothyBrousseau (talk) 02:27, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Images#Forced image size is a good starting point? I think the Manual of Style says something to the effect of "don't do that", but you make your own decision. Josh Parris 02:44, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The easiest way to reduce picture size is to specify the size in the edit section. Where you have thumb I have put 100px. then check with the preview before saving page. I have done it for you but if you do not like it you can make it any size by altering the pixels ie: 125px, 200px, anything you think looks right. If editors claim it is to big on the file page then you can reduce the image by using resizr.com REVUpminster (talk) 11:24, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I had figured it out, but i didn't like it so tiny. I have my preferences set on low resolution, because I can barely see. But when someone with high resolution opens the page that picture is so tiny it might as well not even be there. What do you think of the new pictures? I have to go back and write rationales for them being "fair use". Adding pics to this is a real pain. I don't like the way they are placed in the article either, but hey. Thanks for your help.--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 22:18, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Images are the real pain of wikipedia. I have fought tooth and nail, gone to arbitration and still lost. unless you have taken the picture yourself or have permission or it is maybe a publicity picture there is always someone who will put it up for deletion. I hope someone more experienced than me can help you. David Carradine being dead could be your best bet as pictures are no longer replaceable unless you dig him up. Yes I have seen this reason used!!! on the upload page you must fill out the form and choose something from the licensing section. Good LuckREVUpminster (talk) 00:55, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

fair use photos

{{helpme}} I need help with rationales for fair use photos.--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 22:20, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could you be a bit more specific?  fetchcomms 00:34, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'd liked to know how much information is needed, how to word it and what kinds of statements are considered reasonable rationale. For example, for one picture I included the website that I found it on and I wrote: "To show a person at a particular point in his life.Low resolution. Cannot be replaced with any known free image."Is that sufficient?--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 00:43, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It should be included on the template. If you leave the template parameter blank, I think it has a pre-filled thing.  fetchcomms 00:45, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have not come across a template. When I upload photos, all I get is a sandbox in which to write the rationale.

Here is an example: Template:Non-free use rationale.  fetchcomms 00:59, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some templates, like Template:Logo fur and Template:Film cover fur fill the stuff in by themself. It may be easier to look for one that does so here.  fetchcomms 01:06, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, as we spoke one of my images was deleted. Is it pointless for me to upload it again now that I have the right template, or is it lost to me forever having been deleted once?

photo delete

{{helpme}} I'm just getting to know this stuff and I uploaded some photos and I thought I was giving adequate rationale for fair use, but one of my photos has been deleted "for violation of fair use". The thing is (I think) I was not using the template I was supposed to use. I think I got the whole this figured out now. Should I try uploading that photo again or am I just going to aggravate the the bots?--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 02:32, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would reupload it with the proper template.  fetchcomms 02:34, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But living people does not qualify for fair use, as it is still possible to take pictures of them, so those will be deleted. You may wish to read the fair use policy at WP:fair use.  fetchcomms 02:36, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, now here is the thing. he is NOT living. But there isn't a choice for dead people on the pull down.--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 02:50, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, never mind, I got it. The photos are fair use because they are historical. This stuff ain't easy to learn. --DorothyBrousseau (talk) 04:14, 23 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Hi, Dorothy. Unfortunately, not all images one finds on the internet are usable on Wikipedia. It's not just a case of how much information you give or what you write on the rationale (although those are relevant). But some images are really not usable at all.

Briefly explained, images must be free content or comply with our non-free content criteria.

The criteria basically states that non-free images can only be used when they are (A) used in accordance to the fair use doctrine in U.S. law, (B) are undoubtedly necessary for the proper understanding of the article (and not just good decorations) and (C) can not possibly be replaced by actually free content (like a freely licensed image or event text).

Most of the images you have uploaded fail some of these criteria. You should not be ashamed of that. In regards to copyright, Wikipedia is somewhat different from what we're used to find around the Internet.

I also expect you don't get too disappointed to the point of giving up contributing to the great project Wikipedia is.

Yours, --Damiens.rf 16:21, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

David Carradine

To Dorothybrousseau - for great work on the David Carradine article, and an even better job dealing with editors that are less than ideal. The best asset for anyone to have is a good attitude - and you have got it. Prodego talk 02:17, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You should realize what is vandalism and what isn't. Accusing me of vandalism is not constructive. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Noah Ringer (talkcontribs) 23:37, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So adding a new section called "Life after death" is not vandalism? You aren't fooling me just because you changed your user name. Check out your contribution history, your agenda is obvious.--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 23:43, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No objections to your actions, but you are mentioned: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#User:Rodhullandemu and User:raseaC - New user experience. Prodego talk 01:31, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The IP addresses edits are linked on the 4th line (the link says 'this IP'), I'm willing to give him some leeway on the change of name on your talk page, and assume it was an accident, since he did at a message at the same time, and that happens from time to time. raseaC is not an admin, but Rodhullandemu is. I'd like to apologize for involving you - I had noticed your edits earlier, and your response to Damiens.rf above, and I just wanted to say I think you are doing a great job. Links via your contributions is how I got involved here to begin with. In fact, have a barnstar...
Thanks for the star but I am feeling a bit responsible for a good administrator being accused of misconduct. I do feel that this user is a vandal and since this article get vandalized all the time I get kinda upset when it happens. As a middle school teacher, I appreciate you pointing out that this editor may be young, but I think that that may be more reason to teach him that certain behavior, even anonymously, is not acceptable.--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 02:27, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ultimately, I think that this is a demonstration of a fundamental problem with Wikipedia. 5 years ago, when I joined, the environment was a lot more forgiving and welcoming, and I certainly wouldn't be here today if not for that. It has gotten less and less friendly over the years. I assure you that nothing 'bad' will happen to anyone as a result of this, its just a discussion of how situations like this should be handled, and these sorts of discussions are fairly normal. I don't really want to embroil you in the site politics, but that is really what it is. "How do we treat users who have done something wrong?" You certainly aren't responsible for any of that. Prodego talk 02:34, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar thanks!

Not sure I deserve it but Thank you! – ukexpat (talk) 19:58, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks...

...for my barnstar. I appreciate it. No one likes a vandal (an obvious one or otherwise) so I was just doing what any other editor would have done. I managed to learn something from dealing with that editor so I guess everyone's a winner! raseaCtalk to me 21:53, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My edit

My edit was really only for formatting so that the Directing section would come below the picture in the television section, which I am not sure what relevence it has to that section but I do not delete anybodies images knowing how hard it is to get them accepted in the first place. I looked at Zorro's Black whip and watched some of it and read the wikipage. it reminded me more of the Lone Ranger because they do not know she is a women and she uses a six shooter. With the Queen of Swords she was never portrayed as strong as men and tried to keep her opponents at swordslength not always succeeding. Only in three episodes did she take on the whole garrison and even then beat a hasty retreat on her horse when the odds were too great.REVUpminster (talk) 23:57, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To the relevance of the image. I moved it there because it was that time period and because there wasn't really room for it anywhere else after I uploaded all the other imaged. The fact of the matter is that that image and the one at the top of the page are the only ones that are actually licensed, the owner having uploaded them to wikicommons. The ones I put in there are probably going to be deleted, so it will be back to just those two again. You ain't kidding about how hard it is to get a photo on this site: There is a huge argument going on over a photo of JD Salinger (who just died). He is dead and he was reclusive, there are only a couple of photos of him in existence and yet there is this huge debate over his photo being used as fair use. I can't believe it.--DorothyBrousseau (talk) 00:10, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • The best argument for images in your case is the subject is dead and therefore images are now impossible to replace but as you have found out it is considered to be decorative and should be deleted, but wikipedia is not the bible, even though some would like it to be, but an encyclopedia with illustrations. Keep on going, good luck.REVUpminster (talk) 09:33, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Files to be deleted

{{helpme}} There are some files that I uploaded that have been nominated for deletion. Since I don't agree with these deletions I have posted my disagreement on the "files for deletion" page. Unlike the Salinger file, these are not stirring any discussion. The administrator who nominated the files for deletion has not responded. I understand I am supposed to work it out with the admin first. Since it has been several days with no response, is there some course of action I should be taking? What is the next step? Is someone going to read what I wrote (and the criteria I have added to the files) and make a decision? If so, when? I have tried to find these answers on my own, but Wikipedia is very verbose and I find myself reading volumes without getting the answers I am looking for. Thanks--Shamhat456 (talk) 23:35, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The person that nominated the files for deletion is not an admin. Anyone can nominate - see WP:FFD. Sometime after 7 days an admin will review the comments and decide to keep or delete based on whatever consensus is obtained.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:10, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you allow me, not only "consensus", but correct policy application is taken into account (policies are regarded as "project-wide" consensus, i.e., they can not be overruled by a local discussion "consensus"). --Damiens.rf 00:31, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
