Rakta Charitra (English: A History of Blood) is a two-part Indian biographical film based on the life of Paritala Ravi, produced and directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film features Vivek Oberoi in the role reprising Ravindra, and Suriya as Suri, whose part appears predominantly in the second part. Shatrughan Sinha, Abhimanyu Singh, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Sushant Singh, Priyamani and Radhika Apte among others play other supporting roles. The film, which has been shot primarily in Telugu, is dubbed and released in Hindi as Rakht Charitra and Tamil as Ratha Charitram, with the two parts releasing three weeks apart whilst the Tamil version will release as a single part.[2] The first part of the instalment released on October 21, 2010 whilst the second part will release on November 19, 2010.

The film is based on the life of Paritala Ravi, a factionist and political leader from Andhra Pradesh and will culminate following his 2005 assasination, considering the acts of his rivals.[3]

Reception

The film opened to mostly positive reviews from critics with the film garnering particular praise for Ram Gopal Varma's direction and powerful performances from the ensemble cast. On the review-aggregation website ReviewGang, the film scored 5.0/10 based on 6 reviews.[4] Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama claimed that Varma "handled a number of sequences brilliantly" drawing comparison with the filmmaker's previous successful ventures including Satya and Sarkar. He also went on to praise the performances, labelling Vivek Oberoi as "super efficient" amongst other praises, giving the film a rating of three stars.[5] "Ram Gopal Varma doles out another concoction of outlaw politics with all his favorite ingredients -- an intense ensemble cast, new south Indian baddies, edgy wide angle camerawork and a trademark theme track."[6]. "Rakta Charitra - A feast for serious moviegoers" - Moviebuzz (Sify) [7].

Controversy

The telugu version of the film was received with heavy criticism from fans and leaders of Telugu Desam Party for portraying Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao's character with negative shades. This controversy made the producers to trim the scenes involving Shatrughan Sinha portraying NTR.

Factual Errors

In the movie it is shown that stones and bombs are thrown by Bukka Reddy and his men when Shivaji Rao NTR comes to Dharmavaram in the 1990s. And after that incident immediately Shivaji Rao flees in his car with a voiceover of Ram Gopal Varma calling him a coward.[8]

In reality It was true that Obul Reddy made his men throw stones on the NTR and even few bombs in that area. But after he was thrown stones at, NTR walked for around one kilometer along with hordes of fans and party cadre and dared Obul Reddy to throw bombs on him and kill him.Inspite of repeated pleading from police to leave the area for security reasons NTR stood his ground the next few hours daring Obul Reddy to kill him. This boldness from NTR has surprised the police and the cadre and has become a hot topic at that time.

Ram Gopal Varma admitted his mistake regarding this incident and said that he got it wrong and said that he would make changes to this scene.

In the film it is shown that Shivaji Rao NTR hand Sighs and says 'Out' at Prathap Paritala Ravi to kill Bukka Reddy (Obul Reddy).

But NTR died one year before the murder of Obul Reddy and Ram Gopal Varma also admitted that he made a blunder regarding this incident.[8]
