RCTI (Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia) is Indonesia's first privately owned television network and is based in West Jakarta. RCTI broadcasts Indonesian Idol as well as sinetron (soap operas), films, news and current affairs, reality shows and religious programs. Its news and current affairs programs include Seputar Indonesia (Around Indonesia) and Buletin Malam (Nightly Bulletin). Presenters include Ade Novit, Atika Suri, Desi Anwar and Helmi Johannes.

Background

In 1989, state broadcaster TVRI lost its monopoly when the government's sixth Five-Year Plan allowed private television stations to begin broadcasting. RCTI first went on-air on 24 August 1989]broadcasting in Jakarta area form Jabodetabek as a local pay-channel station and was awarded a nationwide license one year later. It now has 48 relay stations around Indonesia and reaches 180 million viewers. It is 100 percent owned by PT Media Nusantara Citra (MNC) and Panasonic Corporation, which also owns Global TV and 75 percent of MNCTV, both private Indonesian television stations.

Programming

The flagship news program is Seputar Indonesia, which has morning, lunchtime, evening and late night editions. It also broadcasts quiz shows, including the Indonesian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, which ran from 2001 to 2006. Cartoon shows include Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan.

Sports

RCTI broadcast has broadcast every FIFA World Cup since 1990 (except 2006 on SCTV) and other live network on RCTI form 2002 and 2010, UEFA Euro since 1992, AFC Asian Cup since 1992 and ASEAN Football Championship since 1996 which broadcasts the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. RCTI also broadcast Indonesian Open since 1990 (take over on Trans TV since 2002 and now Trans TV and Trans 7 owner by Trans Corproation since 2008) and Thomas & Uber Cup since 1990 (take over on Trans TV since 2002 and now Trans TV and Trans 7 owner by Trans Corproation since 2008). RCTI also broadcast Formula One since 1990 to 2001 (except 1997 on ANteve) (take over on TPI since 2002 Formula One season) and World Rally Championship in 2003. RCTI also broadcasts Deutsche Bundesliga since 2002 and Fiesta La Liga since 2003 through 2009 (taken over by tvOne since mid 2009).

Other segments

RCTI only shows Maghrib prayer in some cities, including Jakarta and Bandung fast join a Jabodetabek and Surabaya content point a Java and Bali. Some RCTI stations shows local programming. For example, in Surabaya, RCTI shows Seputar Surabaya, while in Bandung, RCTI shows Seputar Bandung, Palembang edition shows Seputar Palembang, Batam edition shows Seputar Batam and Medan edition shows Seputar Medan. They are mostly shown during the two closing segments of Seputar Indonesia Pagi (05:45 - 06:15/06:30 WIB).

Overseas broadcasting

RCTI is available as free-to-air channel in East Timor, but only in Dili and other cities such as Ermera and Baucau. RCTI is also available in Malaysia as a free-to-air channel in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya and Selangor began broadcasting in the Klang Valley (the area surrounding Kuala Lumpur (a national capital of Malaysia)). It is also available on cable television for viewers throughout Malaysia, and is also available in Singapore as free-to-air channel and pay channel on cable television systems. RCTI is the only Indonesian free-to-air TV channel to be broadcast free-to-air outside Indonesia.
