The Kurdistan football team (Arabic: فريق كردستان العراق لكرة القدم) is the representative football team of Iraqi Kurdistan. They are not affiliated with FIFA or Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and therefore cannot compete for the FIFA World Cup or the AFC Asian Cup. The Iraqi federation attended a meeting of the New Federation Board in June 2006[1] but did not become a member. A team representing Kurdistan lost a friendly match 3–0 to the Iraq U-23 national team.[when?]
The team played in the 2008 VIVA World Cup finishing in the 4th place after a 3–1 loss to Sápmi. Their first and only win to date came in that tournament in a match against Provence.
In December 2008, during 5th General Meeting, the Iraqi Kurdistan granted full membership to the NF Board and was a failed candidate to host the 2011 VIVA World Cup.
Official Kurdistan FA Emblem
The Kurdistan FA emblem was designed by Kurdish artist Mustafa Nas Nawroly (Kurdish: رهوهند سیروان نهورڕۆڵی) based in London-UK in the year 2005. The emblem represents the Kurdistan flag colours, where the red represents the Kurdish Newroz fire. The Yellow football represtns the Kurdish Sun and the Green banner represents the Green Kurdistan scenery.
