Up until recently the Libyan Government owned and regulated all the local media outlets in Libya through the Jamahiriya News Agency. On 29 January 2006 Saif al-Islam Gaddafi the son of Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi announced that the Libyan government is allowing private radio and television stations and printed news publications. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi's private Media Company One Nine Media (in reference to the date of the Libyan revolution 01/09/1969) launched a Radio Station Allibya FM in shortly after this to be the first privately owned media broadcasting station in Libya.[citation needed]

One Nine Media also signed a multi-million contract with German company Heidelberg, to construct a printing house which will publish "uncensored" foreign publications like Newsweek and Der Spiegel.[citation needed]
