GOCE drive news

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.

Participation
GOCE January 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.

Progress report

We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal.

Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

I undid his "hi" earlier today then he redid it to say "hi i am bob :)" a few hours later... that IP was banned for a year, that ban ended a month ago, i think it needs to be banned permanently, that IP has contributed NOTHING of consequence. I dont know Wikipedia laws or anything, maybe you might.--Billy Nair (talk) 21:19, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

oh, this was on the Thoth page.
That makes sense. I guess the best thing is to add another warning on the talk page and eventually someone else will see they need another ban, i'll let them deal with it--Billy Nair (talk) 22:46, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated.

Statistics
  • 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated.
  • One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%.
  • Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue.
  • Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here.
Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering the barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Thank you for participating in this year's first Backlog elimination drive! We hope to see you in March.

DYK for Egyptian temple

Spectacular! How could such a gap have lasted so long?--Wetman (talk) 04:19, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I saw your response on Wetman's page. Some former members (like me) discovered that there were topics -- like Ethiopia -- in worse need of attention. Had I not moved on, articles like Yekatit 12, Battle of Wayna Daga, & 1960 Ethiopian coup attempt would likely never have been written. Maybe some day, either when Ethiopian topics have more & better contributors, or I tire of writing about them, I will return to Egypt-related topics. But until then, please keep a watch over that corner of Wikipedia for those of us who can't. -- llywrch (talk) 22:45, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you remove that title from DAFT? 173.26.237.244 (talk) 03:10, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE / Mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your mid-drive newsletter.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 79 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 64 have participated. Interest is high due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page, and many new and first-time copy editors have joined us for the drive. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Many thanks to those editors who have been helping out at the Requests page. We have assisted in the promotion of seven articles to Good article status so far this month.

Progress report

We have already achieved our target of reducing the overall backlog by 10%; however, we have more work to do with the 2009 backlog. We have almost eliminated May 2009 and we only have some 700 articles left from 2009. It is excellent progress, so let's concentrate our fire power on the remaining months from 2009. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Utahraptor resigns

The UtahraptorTalk to me has decided to step down from his position as project coordinator due to real-life issues.

Raul knew about it. I was keeping an eye on some of the joke pages to ensure nominations were closed, things reverted back to normal. Was going to remove the tag at midnite (UTC) but you beat me to it. =) CycloneGU (talk) 00:35, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive report

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive! This newsletter summarizes the March drive and other recent events.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

There were 99 signups for the drive; of these, 70 participated. Interest was high mainly due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page. We had a record-breaking 84 articles listed on the Requests page in March; 11 of these have been promoted to Good article status so far. Several of our recent efforts have received Featured Article status as well, and the GOCE is becoming a solid resource for the Wikipedia community. Many thanks to editors who have been helping out at the Requests page and by copy editing articles from the backlog.

Progress report

Remarkable progress was made in reducing the backlog this month, as we now have fewer than 500 articles remaining from 2009. We are well under the 4,000-article mark for the total number remaining in the queue. Since our backlog drives began in May 2010 with 8,323 articles, we have cleared more than 53% of the backlog. A complete list of results and barnstars awarded can be found here. Barnstars will be distributed over the next week. If you enjoyed participating in our event, you may also like to join the Wikification drives, which are held on alternate months to our drives. Their April drive has started.

New coodinators

On March 21, SMasters appointed Chaosdruid (talk) and Torchiest (talk) as Guild coordinators to serve in place of The Utahraptor, who recently stepped down. Please feel free to contact any coordinator if you have any questions or need assistance.

March barnstar

The Working Man's Barnstar

Economy of Iran FAC

I think that if you really wanted to promote this article to FA as you say you do, you could list the issue exhaustively and I could try to make the necessary modification. It could be done quickly.

I see. Just you know: I know this article well and know all (almost) sources of information as well. This to say that this part (of sourcing) should be instantaneous. In fact you can find them listed in most specialized articles already. What is needed is a quick copy editing afterwards :)

Congratulations!

Thanks for the message, and congratulations :-) It was a pleasure to review. and it's a really important contribution to our (not that great) Egyptology coverage. By the way - how much have you heard about the work we've been doing with the British Museum? There's got to be a reasonable chance that we'll end up working with them on something egypt-related sometime, would that be of any interest to you? The Land (talk) 09:38, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Princess Maria Amélia of Brazil

Hello, Parrot. Princess Maria Amélia of Brazil has been successfully promoted and is now a Featured Article. That would'nt have been possible if you had not taken your time to to review it and give your full support. I really appreciate that and I came here to let you know it. I mean it.

I'd like to make a comment about something else, if you don't mind. I saw the thread you created in the FAC talk page and I believe you should review articles that either you are interested in the subject or that you have somekind of knowledge on the subject. There is no need to suffer so much and review 10 articls because 10 editors reviewed your FAC. Wikipedia is supposed to be fun... in a serious place. But still fun. Not a pain in the ass. You're doing great and I think you should keep like that.

I'm leaving Wikipedia now, as I had some issues with an editor in the FAC of Maria Amélia which made me grow tired of this website. However, I don't want that to happen to another editors. Find frieds here, people who can back you up when you need or else, you'll be crushed when you face a clique. But I wish good luck and I hope you continue doing a great work as you have so far. Regards, --Lecen (talk) 12:31, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yales Classical studies

Technically, it's a book series, and normally I would use the "series" field (as in here), however, in the cases where the volumes in a series do not have individual titles and do not form a clear multivolume work, the journal template seems appropriate (it's a much more frequent situation in the hard science than the humanities), at least, it fits the bibliographic data in a more natural way than the book one. I've seen that later volumes have separate titles, and for those I'd happily use the book format (especially as they have ISBNs, but even then it can get fuzzy, and in biology, many book series are still formatted as if they were journals). It's a bit of a judgement call, but I think the logic is sound. Circéus (talk) 17:02, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

James A. Garfield

Could you, A. Parrot, copy edit the James A. Garfield article for GA review? Thanks. Cmguy777 (talk) 00:41, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That is fine. Thanks for response and looking at the article. Cmguy777 (talk) 02:13, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A. Parrot, why is it that you always seem to reject or revert my submissions for Wikipedia:Deleted articles with freaky titles? I've had lots of good ideas, and I hope it isn't anything personal. 173.26.222.97 (talk) 00:02, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
