The Saturdays

The Saturdays are a girl group formed in 2007, and located in London, United Kingdom. The band consists of five members, which are Frankie Sandford, Vanessa White, Una Healy, Mollie King and Rochelle Wiseman. They made their recording début in 2008 for the record label Fascination Records, a sub-division of Polydor Records. Their first debut single "If This is Love" stayed in the charts for seventeen weeks. To-date the band have released three albums which have charted in the UK Top 10 Albums Chart and scored eight UK Top Ten singles, with only 9 singles released. As of September 2010, the band have sold roughly over 2.5 million records in the UK alone.[1]

Their debut album, Chasing Lights, produced 4 top ten singles on the UK Singles Chart.[2] The band embarked on their first headlining UK tour, The Work Tour, in June 2009, and started work on their second album during this tour.[3] The band released the number-two single "Forever Is Over" in October 2009 from their second album, Wordshaker.[2][4] The album peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart and produced another top ten single, "Ego".[2] The Saturdays released a mini album, Headlines!, on 16 August 2010.[5] "Missing You" is the album's last single, and "Higher" is the second. Soon after release, the band announced an accompanying tour, The Headlines Tour.[6]

The Saturdays confirmed that they would go on tour again, in December 2011.[7] It was confirmed that their single from their fourth upcoming album would be released on 22 May 2011, titled "Notorious"[8] The single was written by Steve Mac and Ina Wroldsen.[9]

Career history

2008–09: Chasing Lights and The Work Tour

The Saturdays were signed to Fascination Records, a sub-label of Polydor Records. Their first studio album, Chasing Lights, was recorded during May and June 2008 with input from multiple producers and song writers, including Alex James, Ina Wroldsen and Alex Cartana. The group supported Girls Aloud on their Tangled Up Tour before the release of their first single, "If This Is Love". The single was released on 2 July 2008 and peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart,[2] the track featured a sample of Yazoo's 1982 single, "Situation. The second single, "Up", was released in October 2008 and peaked at number 5. The single achieved a certificate of Silver by the BPI. The single was produced by Quiz & Larossi. "Up" was described as an upbeat bubblegum pop, dance-pop and electropop song.[10][11][12] Its style has also been described as "electro-tinged" and "robotic disco-pop".[12][13] The song has a fun and anthemic feel to it.[10][13] It is 4 minutes and 4 seconds in length.[14] The track also contains prominent siren sound effects which have been likened to the sound of Mis-Teeq's 2003 song "Scandalous".[11] The backing is synthesised on one note throughout the whole song.[15] Written in the key of A minor the beat of the song is set in 6/8 and progresses at an uptempo 126 beats per minute.[16][17] The chorus follows an Am–F–Dm–E chord progression. Also in October, the album Chasing Lights was released. It peaked at number 9 on the UK Albums Chart.[2] In early 2009 the album was certified Platinum by the BBI.[18] The third single, "Issues", was released in January 2009 and reached number 4,[2] which also gained a certificate of Silver by the BBI.[18] Early in the band's career, Frankie Sandford stated in an interview with Mail Online, "'We aren't models who can't sing. We all sing and we all dance. No one's telling us what to do. We're all different because we're just ourselves - and that's the way it should be."[19]

As well as supporting Girls Aloud, The Saturdays also supported the Jonas Brothers at their Hammersmith Apollo gig on 11 September.[20] They also played at Capital FM's Jingle Bell Ball at The O2 Arena in December.[21] On 5 November they performed at Perez Hilton's One Night In Liverpool, and played at Cardiff's Gay Pride event.[22] On the Christmas 2008 special of British Nickelodeon show Ross Lee's Ghoulies, The Saturdays made a special appearance.[23] They also guest starred in Hollyoaks Later in September 2008 and on a 10-minute BBC show, Myths. Early in 2009, the group presented a "Debut Singles" chart show for 4Music. In March, the group released their fourth single, a cover of the Depeche Mode song "Just Can't Get Enough" as one of the official Comic Relief 2009 singles. The single peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and was the group's third consecutive top twenty hit in Ireland, reaching number six, the group's first top ten appearance in a foreign music market.[24] The single later achieved a Silver certificate by the BBI.[18] The song has also become a cult anthem for Celtic Football Club.[25]

The group announced that they would be doing their own tour in 2009 – The Work Tour, the tour had twenty-seven dates. The group's support acts for the tour were Mini Viva, Pixie Lott, Vagabond and Jessie Malakouti.[26] The name The Work Tour came across after the band released a fifth and final single from the first studio album, Chasing Lights, which was the single "Work", the single later peaked at number 22 in the UK and number 21 in Ireland.[2] Also McFly's Dougie Poynter, Frankie Sandford's boyfriend played bass guitar during "Just Can't Get Enough".[27][28][29] Vanessa White tripped on some wires back stage and had a foot injury, she remained seated on stage for some shows.[30] On the last night of the tour at Manchester Apollo, Michael Jackson's memorial service was on backstage and the band was watching it, so they played a tribute song, singing, sing-a-long of The Jacksons' "Blame It on the Boogie".

2009–10: Wordshaker

The album's lead single from the album was titled "Forever Is Over", which gained positive reviews from critics, with OK! Magazine labelling the song as "An infectious synth pop tune".[31] Muumuse.com had the following to say: "Radio-friendly doesn't even begin to describe it - the chorus is simply massive."[32] After the single was released on October 4th 2009, the album make is debut on the UK Singles Charts at number-two making the song one of the bands best peak positions. The song also debuted on the Irish Singles Charts at number nine. "Forever Is Over" was wrote by James Bourne; ex-Busted member, Louis Biancaniello and Sam Watters, although it was originally written for American Idol winner, Kelly Clarkson.[33] The single was also wanted by American pop rock artist, Pink.[34]

The CD single of "Forever Is Over" was released with a B-side, which was titled "I Can't Wait", which was written by the band themselfs, with Hannah Robinson and later produced by producers Ben Macklin, Julian Peakeand Richard Stannard.[35] In 2008 and 2009, the Saturdays appeared in adverts for several products including a brand of deodorant, tampons,[36] mobile phones, an operating system, and hair removal products.[37] In December 2009, they performed a gig at the HMV Forum in London, which was later shown on Channel 4.[38]

The second and final single to be released from Wordshaker was confirmed as "Ego". The single was wrote by Steve Mac and Ina Wroldsen who has wrote the majority of the bands songs, the song was also produced by Mac. The band appeared on Dancing on Ice to promote the single, they also made an appearance on GMTV, Blue Peter and Alan Carr: Chatty Man. The single was accompanied by a music video which was released in November 2009, and had a similar theme to The Watchmen which was set in 1985. The lead male in the video was Waz Ashayer, who appeared in Make Me a Supermodel.[39] After the promotion of the single the charted at number-nine on the UK Singles Charts and number-ten on the Irish Singles Chart. Although the single became one of the lowest charting, it became one of their best selling singles, with the single gaining a Silver certification by the BBI.[18] The single is their second best selling second behind "Up", where "Up" holds sales of 311,000 and "Ego" holding 307,000[citation needed]

2010–11: Headlines! and The Headlines Tour

The group's newest project is titled Headlines! and according to member Una Healy,it is a mini album[40] due for release on 16 August 2010.[41] The group have said that if the chance arose they would like to collaborate with American R&B singer-songwriters singers, Ne-Yo and Jason Derülo.[42] The project's lead single, "Missing You" was released on 8 August 2010. Universal Music said "Missing You" is "bittersweet lyrics are an ode to a lost love, sung over some synth riffs."[41] The music video was shot at the end of May 2010. On 26 June, the music video was premiered on the Saturdays' website. It was shot in Malaga, Spain.[41] The single was performed for the first time an T4 on the Beach 2010 on 4 July 2010,[43] though King was absent from the performance due to an injury.[44] King stated on The Saturdays: 24/7, "It puts a strain on the band, you have to rearrange the formation and someone’s having to learn my lines and my harmonies."[45] 'Missing You' entered the UK Singles Chart at number three, with 'Headlines' also entering at number 3 on the album chart.[46]

The newest single is "Higher",[47][48][49] which entered the UK singles chart at number 10 on 7 November 2010.[50] After Flo Rida beat the group to number one for the second time, the American rapper offered to do a collaboration with the band, after saying, "I don’t know much about The Saturdays but we put smiles on people’s faces when we make music, which counts more than getting number ones."[51] The Saturdays jetted off to Los Angeles to film their latest music video for single "Higher".[52] They also performed at the 2010 Help for Heroes charity concert, with over 60,000 fans present.[53] Boy band JLS have expressed views to record a duet with the band.[54][55] On 31 August 2010, it was announced that the band had collaborated with American rapper, Flo Rida.[56][57] It was later confirmed, by the band's official website that Flo Rida had recorded a new version of the group's ninth single, "Higher", which Rida's vocals would be featured on.[58][59] It was also announced that the single would be released on 29 September 2010.[58] Flo Rida recorded his parts of the music video separately.[60] The video was completed on 29 August 2010.[61] "Higher" had its first radio airplay on 16 September 2010, the Flo Rida version.[62] "Higher" debuted at number 10 in the UK, which meant it was their eighth exclusive top 10 hit in the UK. Higher has spent a total of 13 weeks inside the UK Top 40, and 24 weeks in the Top 100, selling over 260,000[citation needed] copies to date making it their 3rd best-selling single.[citation needed] The week after "Higher" was released, 8 November 2010 they re-issued their third studio album Headlines! which included the new Flo Rida version of "Higher" and three other tracks which were on their previous album Wordshaker. In late November, Headlines! gained a Gold certification by the British phonographic industry.[18]

The Saturdays announced their second national tour in the UK, the tickets went on sale on 3 September 2010, the tour is named The Headlines Tour. The tour will take in a total of 17 cities across the country beginning in Liverpool on 5 February, before culminating in the Republic of Ireland on 2 March, the last of their first headlining gigs in the country. This will be there first venture into touring in a foreign country, with their dates in Dublin, so far, bringing the tour to an end. Wiseman said: "We couldn't be more excited for the 'Headlines' tour. Performing live is absolutely our favourite part of being in the Saturdays, and we can't wait to see all our fans up and down the country!"[63] The Headlines Tour sold out in each of its venues.[64] The group are set to release Headlines! in Europe during Summer 2011, with "Higher" acting as their european debut single which will be released May 13 according to German magazine Bravo.[65]

2011–present: Upcoming fourth album

The Saturdays started work on their 4th studio LP during 2010 which is expected to be released during Autumn 2011.[citation needed] They debuted a track from the album 'Turn Myself In' during The Headlines Tour In February 2011 which the group stated they wrote.[66] During the tour, Wiseman confirmed that they will be working with Labrinth on one track for the upcoming LP.[67][68] They have also been working with Alphabeat,[69][70] Taio Cruz,[71] Steve Mac,[72] Space Cowboy,[73] Carl Falk[74] and Rami Yacoub.[75] So far two tracks have came to puplic attention including 'Turn Myself In' and 'Notorious' which will all apear on the album. A third track titled 'White Lies' has also been recorded with production credits from Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub which was confirmed by Falk on Twitter "Looking forward to record my song White Lies with u guys tomorrow!" [76]

The first single from the un-titled LP is called "Notorious" and will be released digitally on May 22th 2011.[77]In April they embarked on their second trip to LA to film the music video [78]. This is their second video they have recorded in LA, the first being the previous single, "Higher". Wiseman teased fans saying the new record sounds "different" and "fierce". [79] Radio presenter Aled Jones tweeted on Twitter, "Just heard the new songs from The Saturdays and Black Eyed Peas :) didn't expect The Saturdays song to sound like it did!" [80]. "Notorious" has been produced by Steve Mac with writing credits from Ina Wroldsen and Steve Mac.[81]

Aside from work on their next album, The Saturdays are also expected to release "Higher" as their international debut single on May 13th 2011 in Germany with the album to follow later in the Summer.[82]

Other endeavours

Television & Radio appearances

In late 2007, the group made an appearance in an episode of Hollyoaks Later,the late-night spin-off of teen soap Hollyoaks. The Saturdays were given their own reality TV show, by ITV2, which aired on 26 August 2010, titled The Saturdays: 24/7.[83] The program was produced by RDF Television and had four episodes, which aired from 26 August to 16 September. The Saturdays: 24/7 was an ITV Studios Production and Globe Productions for ITV2. The series was ordered by Zai Bennett, Director of Digital Channels and Acquisitions at ITV and commissioned by Katy Thorogood, ITV's Commissioning Editor Factual and Daytime. The executive producer is Jo Scarratt, ITV Studios.[84] The program was sponsored by watch maker, six timepieces from Sekonda[85] can be seen during the show. The group stated they were happy to get their own show, Frankie Sandford stated "You always see in the papers, that me and girls are always arguing, we really don't, and there is no bitching at all."[45] The plot of the show was to follow the Saturdays every step – from gigs, photo-shoots and TV appearances to driving lessons, surprise birthday sky-dives and hanging out with family and friends.[citation needed] Kevin O'Sullivan from the Sunday Mirror said that The Saturdays: 24/7 was "Exciting stuff". But he went on to criticize the show after he compared the program to Jedward: Let Loose, he said that they are both as bad as each other, and he does not know how anybody can be tuning in, for both of the shows.[86] In the first episode of The Saturdays: 24/7 the band were shown gigging around the UK, without King, after she was taken ill after being bitten by a horse-fly.[87] When The Headlines Tour started, the band announced another series of the program will air in March/April.[citation needed]

The Saturdays took part in paranormal television programme based on investigating purported paranormal activity, Ghosthunting with... Yvette Fielding, the host of the show, took the band to three different haunted locations in Wales. The show aired on 8 November 2010.[88]


Frankie, Rochelle and Mollie appeared on the Chris Moyles show on BBC Radio 1 on Thursday 19th May 2011.

Merchandise and sponsorship deals

In early 2010, the band announced they were giving their name to an autobiography.[89] They later announced the title The Saturdays: Our Story.[89] It was officially released on 25 October 2010. The artwork of the book, has a similar cover to their album, Headlines!. The band began a book signing on 16 October 2010, where they visited WH Smith in Bluewater for a book signing.[89] The book gives insight into the world of The Saturdays by telling the tale of their success. The band members each have their own chapter, and spoke about love interests, their friendship within the band, and a personal insight into their lives before finding fame. The book also gives fashion and beauty tips, some gossip, accompanied by photos from the member's own collection.[90]

In 2009, the band was named as models for hair removal product, Veet.[91] The band later became new faces of major campign of Impulse women's deodorant. The band recorded a television add, which featured their songs "Forever Is Over" and "Ego". It was also dubbed as "The Impulse Diaries". The TV content, which involves a sponsorship package on Channel 4, will show the band members in various settings, including a hotel room, a tour bus and backstage before a gig. This first aired on October 23.[92] The band also done a photoshoot, posing on a gaint sofa as they launched T-Mobile's Big Sofa Night In compaign in London, United Kingdom. The band sat on the sofa for more than 12 hours, the sofa was the size of a double decker bus.[93][94] In 2005, band member Vanessa White appeared in a Cheese strings advert which aired on television, in the UK.[95]

Philanthropy

In 2009, it was announced that The Saturdays would record a song for Comic Relief.[96] It was revealed that the band put their fourth single ("Work") to release the comic relief single. It was comfirmed that the band would release a cover of Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" for the charity single. The single was released on March 1 2009. A week later when the song charted, it was announced that the song had charted at #2 on the UK Singles Charts making the band the first artist in 14 year for their comic relief single not to chart at number-one.[97] In May 2010, the band teamed up with Manchester United Football Club and they will single at a pre-match concert at Old Trafford.[98] On Sunday 12th September 2010, the band performed Help for Heroes charity concert with over 60,000 fans there.[99] In March 2011, the band Westfield shopping centre with buckets and asked customers to part with their cash. In which they were doing it for Marie Curie Cancer Care, which provides nurses to help care for people with terminal cancer. Rochelle stated; "We were collecting money in Westfield, for our charity Marie Curie! We raised a lot I think."[100] The band also performed at the The Sunshine Concert which was held at the Troxy in London; in order to raise money for charity.[101] Frankie Sandford took part in in TV show, The Door, which she took part in in aid for charity. Sandford stated; "It's funny because I know when I watch it that I'll look like I hate every second of it but I absolutely loved it, I wanted it to keep going."[102]

Musical style

The Saturdays have worked with songwriter Ina Wroldsen since they gained a record deal in 2007, with her writing the majority of the bands songs, including "Higher", "Ego" and "Up".[citation needed] The band's debut single, "If This Is Love," featured elements of Synthpop and New Wave genres within it, and sampled an older song, "Situation," by Yazoo's.[103][104] The style has also been described by music critics as "obligatory fluffy summery pop", "pure uplifting pop", "an 80's throwback" and "an electro-soul number".[104] as its heavily-synthesised backing rhythm, the difference between the rhythm of "If This Is Love" is that it is in A♭-tune, in comparison to the original's C♭-tune.[105] Many critics stated that the band's music appeals to the gay community.[106][107] The band released their eighth single, "Missing You" (2010), which is an electropop song incorporating elements of trance and synthpop.[108] It was described as an "experimental" and an "updated version" of the their previous sound by the band.[109] The production was described as "pretty" but "limp" as the "melody is traded for a random 'miss, missing you' refrain".[108] After the release of 2010 album, Headlines!; OK! magazine noticed that the band has developed "a feisty edge".[110] The band have dubbed their music as "Entertainment-Focus".[111] It also has the bands music have also been described as "surging beats" which have a "breathless chorus".[112] The band have made use of auto-tuning on their vocals, most notable on "Missing You" and "Higher"[113] The production of "Higher" was described as "hectic"[112] yet very catchy".[114]

The band's style has taken criticism from some. Elton John labelled the band's music as "crap" and stated that he cannot tell the difference between Girls Aloud's music and The Saturday's music, saying "Frankly, they all sound the same. 'It's hard to tell Girls Aloud from The Saturdays. And then there's Cheryl Cole... it's all c**p."[115] However, many artists have shared interests in The Saturdays, including Bruno Mars, Flo Rida, Justin Bieber and more.[116] The band have stated they have many influences in their music, including artists such as, Ne-Yo, Jason Derülo and Girls Aloud.[117]
