Template:Infobox Television Amazing Race The Amazing Race Australia is an Australian reality television game show based on the American reality television series, The Amazing Race that is broadcast on the Seven Network. The series features eleven teams of two who are in a pre-existing personal relationship, and follow the various challenges that they undertake as they race around the world to win A$250,000. The show is currently airing and is produced by Active TV Australia.[1]

The Amazing Race Australia is hosted by Grant Bowler.[2][3] The first episode aired on 16 May 2011 at 8:30pm.[4]

Production

Filming and development

Filming began on 5 November 2010 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne.[5] The race will travel across four continents, 12 countries and 23 cities.[3] Some of the countries visited during the season include: Indonesia, Israel and Egypt.[6]

During the Vietnam leg, all route markers were coloured yellow and green instead of yellow and red. This was done to avoid confusion with the former South Vietnamese national flag, which is also yellow and red.

Cast

Application deadline for the first season closed on 17 September 2010 (extended from 6 September 2010[7]) initially with the applicants required to be at least 18 years old with citizenship or permanent residency. However, due to insurance issues overseas, the minimum age for applicants was raised from 18 to 21 years of age.[8][9][10]

The cast includes married entrepreneurs, farmers, friends of Egyptian descent, models and reunited sisters. Notably, Nathan, who teams up with Tyler, is boyfriend of 2006 Miss Australia, Erin McNaught.[11] Renae was also the runner up of Miss Universe Australia 2010.[3]

Marketing

The Amazing Race Australia is sponsored by Canon, National Australia Bank, Honda, Vodafone and Gloria Jean's.[12]

In the Race's first Roadblock, one team member had to scale (or climb) then abseil one of the six light towers of the Melbourne Cricket Ground 75 metres before retrieving their next clue. In the Detour, teams choose between Cash or Carry. In Cash, teams were required to make and sell the local traditional Bakso for no less than 5,000 Rp per bowl, and were required to sell 15 of them. In Carry, teams were required to find a market stall and carry traditional produce on their heads to another market stall within the same market before retrieving their next clue.

Additional tasks
  • At the BlueWater Express, teams must sign up for three boats leaving for Lombok, with the first boat leaving at 6:00 AM containing the first three teams, with the second and third boat leaving at 30 minute intervals from the first boat for the remaining eight teams (four in each of the other boats).
