"Moves like Jagger"
Song

"Moves Like Jagger" is a song by American band Maroon 5 featuring pop singer Christina Aguilera. The song was released on June 21, 2011 in conjunction with a live performance of the song on The Voice and it was officially released to iTunes on same day.[2] The song's lyrics refer to a male protagonist's ability to impress a female with his moves, which he compares to those of Mick Jagger.[1] It was written by Adam Levine, Benny Blanco, Ammar Malik and Shellback, and it was produced by Shellback and Blanco.[3] The song debuted at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, therefore making it the band's first Top 10 single since 2007's "Makes Me Wonder" and Aguilera's first Top 10 since 2008's, "Keeps Gettin' Better". 'Jagger' also marks the first time two former Best New Artist Grammy winners have collaborated on a Hot 100 hit.[4]

Background

Atop a looping sine wave and guitar strings, Levine boasts, brags and tries his best to impress his female interest on this upbeat tune, even comparing his dance moves to Rolling Stones icon Mick Jagger.[1] In the hook, he sings: – “Take me by the tongue / And I'll know you / Kiss me 'til you're drunk / And I'll show you / All the moves like Jagger / I've got the moves like Jagger / I've got the moves like Jagger.”[5][1] Aguilera pops ups mid-way through the bouncy song’s bridge and plays up her role as a tease. “You want to know how to make me smile / Take control, own me just for the night / But if I share my secret / You gonna have to keep it / Nobody else can see this,” she sings before offering up her signature soaring vocals.[1]

Music Video

On July 7, 2011, Christina Aguilera confirmed on her Twitter account that she was shooting the music video with Maroon 5.[6]

Reception

James Dinh from MTV Newsroom said that "Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera have turned their friendly rivalry on NBC's The Voice into some studio chemistry." While naming the track "a contender for 2011’s song of the summer."[1] Robbie Daw from Idolator compared the whistling melody and disco guitar riffs to that of Rolling Stones's chart-topping 1978 classic “Miss You.”[7] While naming the song "a surprisingly electro-tinged jam" and praised Aguilera for "stealing the show."[7] Daw conclued that: "this is the best thing from either of these two in years."[7] Bill Lamb editor of About.com/Top 40 was impressed with the song's "light, loose-limbed, funky melody", "enough edginess in the lyrics" and the "vocal chemistry between Levine and Aguilera."[8] Rating it four-and-a-half out of five stars, Lamb went to praise "The imagery of "take me by the tongue," and "look into my eyes and I'll own you" reveal an edginess not present in purely light pop songs."[8] Lamb conclued that: ""Moves Like Jagger" is an outstanding summer song. It is light, danceable, and would sound great in the car with the top down."[8]

Live performances

"Moves Like Jagger" was performed for the first time with Christina on June 21, 2011, during The Voice, a talent competition show on which both Aguilera and Maroon 5's lead singer Adam Levine are coaches.[1]
