Detox is the upcoming third and final studio album by American hip hop artist Dr. Dre, set to be released in 2011 through Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. It was originally due for a 2004 release, but was not completed because Dr. Dre wanted to concentrate on producing for artists that were on his Aftermath Entertainment record label.[4] Eventually, the album was scheduled for a December 2010[5] release, but it has since slipped to 2011.[6] Dr. Dre has stated that this will be his final album.[7][8]

Background

Work for the album dates back to early 2003,[9] but later in that year he decided to stop working on the album to focus on producing for other artists. The album had initially been set for a fall 2005 release.[10]

On February 18, 2007, Dr. Dre revealed to Power 106 radio station that he had completed 18 potential tracks for the album.[11] He plans to have 12 or 13 songs in the final version, with each one being a single.[12] He also announced that the introductory track is titled "Intervention".[11] However, Bishop Lamont stated that the album will include more than 13 tracks.[7]

In an interview, 50 Cent was asked about Detox, in which he spoke of his collaborations and Dr. Dre's progress, stating:

He's working on it. I've recorded two songs for him. He's such a perfectionist. But sometimes that can be a bad thing. You create new pressure when you wait that long. When you put a new album against the last two classics, people will scrutinize it if they become impatient.[13]

On September 9, 2007, before presenting the award for Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards, Dr. Dre stated that Detox will be released.[14][15] Dre later revealed to Hillary Crosley of Billboard magazine that Detox would be his final album.[16] In February 2008, Bishop Lamont also announced a second "Up in Smoke Tour" to begin shortly after the album.[17]

In May 2008, AllHipHop.com reported that rumors spread about Detox being completed.[18] That same month, Detox and Eminem's new studio album were revealed to be released for the fourth quarter of 2008.[19] In an interview with Defsounds, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo stated that they are unsure if they will appear on Detox. They stated that 50 Cent has recorded about three songs for Detox.[20] In an interview with the website DubCNN.com, rapper The D.O.C. also said that fellow N.W.A. members Ice Cube and MC Ren would most likely not be guests on the album.[21] Ice Cube later stated in August 2008 that he is likely to be featured on the album.[22]

In June 2008, Snoop Dogg announced that Detox was completed and that Dre is looking for the right songs for the album. He also said it would be worth the wait.[23][24][25] During the same month, Dr. Dre revealed that he was aiming to release the album in November or December 2008. He said "I'm just now, over the last couple of months, starting to feel that it's going to be right and it's something I can be proud of, and everybody is going to love it". Dr. Dre also talked about the drum work on the album that is derived from live instrumentation, saying "We have an entirely new thing going with the drums that's incredible and we're still developing that".[26]

On August 6, 2008 it was reported that Dr. Dre and Drinks Americas made a joint venture to release a drink called "Aftermath Cognac" within the next 60 days. According to Drinks Americas, this drink would be introduced at the same time as the Detox album as part of a marketing plan.[27]

In an interview with Loud.com, DJ Quik revealed that Dr. Dre has recorded around 400 songs for the album, and he himself had heard about 60 of them. He also revealed that Dre has been getting piano lessons from Burt Bacharach and has been reinterpreting "symphony stuff" by Frédéric Chopin for Detox.[28]

Dr. Dre told MTV in December 2008 that the album will be released after Eminem's Relapse, which was released in May 2009 and 50 Cent's Before I Self Destruct which was released in November 2009.[29] In an interview with FLOW 93.5 in January 2009, Canadian producer Boi-1da revealed that he's also working on Detox.[30] A month earlier, Dr. Dre appeared on the remix of "Set It Off" by Kardinal Offishall, produced by Boi-1da.[31] Canadian rapper Drake, a friend of Boi-1da, also worked on the album.[32]

He premiered the first official snippet of Detox in a Dr. Pepper commercial that debuted on May 28, 2009.[33] 50 Cent and Eminem asserted in an interview on BET's 106 & Park that Dr. Dre had about ten songs finished for Detox.[34] Southern rapper Ludacris stated in an interview that he had done ghostwriting for Dr. Dre's record.[35] T.I., Lil Wayne, and Drake have also been believed to be ghost-writing for the album.[36] In an interview with The D.O.C., he confirmed that the album was planned to be completed by November 2009,[37] with Dr. Dre later announcing that he hopes to release the album in 2010.[38] However, in January 2010 during an interview with Slam, Dr. Dre revealed that the album would not be released until 2011. "Well, I'm working on it, but also I've been working on other people's projects; you'll probably hear something in a year or so."[39] However, in April 2010, CNBC interviewed Dre and Jimmy Iovine to promote new Beats headphones, when asked about Dre's Detox record, he stated that he would "finally release it this year".[40] In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Ice Cube said that Dr. Dre is working on Detox and he will be featured on the album.[41] In interview with DJ Skee, Scott Storch stated that "Detox is only three songs away for completion."[42] Singer Kokane confirmed that he has worked with Dre and Aftermath producers Chocolate and DJ Silk on the album; he also reported that New Jersey rapper Redman was in the studio with the artists at the time of the recording.[43] It was revealed in late August, that producer Scott Storch had been working with Dre on the album in L.A, since January.[44] In September, Dre opened up about his relationship with 50 Cent, saying that although they are on good terms, he has not spoken to him in a while, and hopes to work on this album with him again.[45] Dr. Dre touched on speculation that he recorded a tribute to his son who died in 2008.

While he does admit that he has recorded material in honor of his son, he does not know if it will be suitable for 'Detox' as the album is set to have an upbeat feel:

"I'm actually back and forth about that. I'm leaning towards no because I don't know if I want to put myself or my family through that. I kind of want the record to stay fun. Right now as we speak, I'm leaning towards no. Though I do have a couple of things that I've done for him."[46]

Dr. Dre stated that leaked reference tracks will not make the final cut of the album.[47] This includes two versions of a song titled "Topless". The first version featuring T.I.,[48] and the second version featuring Eminem[49] (both versions featured Nas). It also includes "Coming Back"[50] and "This is Detox" both featuring T.I. with Kobe,[51] "OG's Theme" featuring Ludacris,[52] "Say Dr. Dre" featuring Crooked I,[53] "The Doctor" featuring Young Knox[54] and an untitled Detox reference track featuring Nino Bless.[55] Another track titled "Syllables", leaked onto the internet in late 2010 with Eminem being the main artist and Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Stat Quo and Cashis appearing as features.[56] Cashis spoke about the track in regard to which album it was to be featured on:

“I think it was going to be for one of Em’s albums or Detox."[57]

Another reference track titled "Could Have Been You" featuring Bishop Lamont, R. Kelly and 50 Cent leaked in 2009. A source close to Dr. Dre's camp told MTV that Dr. Dre was expecting the song to be on Detox and was furious with the track being leaked so early.[58] The song was later released on 50 Cent's album Before I Self Destruct, but Bishop Lamont's verse was not included.

Dr. Dre and Interscope President Jimmy Iovine held a press conference in September 2010 for "Beats By Dre" headphones. At the time, Dr. Dre said the album could be here by Christmas. In a recent conversation with MTV, Dre said he's found another source of inspiration that's pushing him even harder to get the project finished.

"Being on the stage with Eminem and Jay-Z was one of the most incredible feelings I've felt in a long time. It inspired me, it made me want to hurry up and get back in the studio and put more effort and more work into my own project," he said. "The response from the people out there was just incredible,". "It let me know that I still got love out there and I'm not wasting my time in the studio with what I'm doing, with the music or with all the Beats product that we're putting out."[59]

Dr. Dre's protege Slim da Mobster stated that he wrote about 70% of the album but there will still be tracks on there that he did not write.[60] Joell Ortiz revealed he wrote 20 possible songs for Detox.[61]

Producer Rico Love also is producing on the album with Dr. Dre.[62]

The album was announced by Slim da Mobster to be 12 songs long.[63]

In January 2011, 50 Cent was interviewed by MTV regarding why the album is so highly anticipated.

"I think everyone is [looking forward to Detox]. When you got a producer that has that kind of production track record, you even have to credit both Eminem's success and my success to Dr. Dre as a producer. My first single off of Get Rich or Die Tryin' — people constantly tell me it was a classic — was produced by Dr. Dre, 'In Da Club.' Without that momentum from that song, I'm not sure they would have taken to 'P.I.M.P.' the same way or '21 Questions' or any of the other hit records I released following that."[64][65]

An unknown source told British newspaper The Sun that Jay-Z and Dr. Dre recorded verses for an unnamed track for Dre’s upcoming final album Detox, and that there was space left in the track for Beyonce to deliver a chorus. The full quote from the source read:

"Jay and Dre have recorded their verses with the chorus left open for Beyoncé to sing. The producer has worked on Detox for over a decade. He wanted the couple together."[66][67]

Dr. Dre has sampled the La Roux track "In for the Kill" for his album.[68][69]

Just Blaze has long been attached to Detox as one of its contributors on beats, and he revealed some details about the album to Sway. One tidbit shared was that since Dre “announced” the project (more on that later) in 2002, there have been multiple versions of the album recorded.

“The work on Detox, it’s been a long process,” Just Blaze told “RapFix.” “I been going back and forth to L.A. for like eight years. Well, 2002, so it’s been nine years years, actually. I’ve seen the album through different phases. I’ve heard near-complete versions of the album, then he turns around and scratches it and does the same thing two or three times over.”

[70]

Just Blaze confirmed that he has at least two records on Detox, including a song that features the Game and Snoop Dogg.

“I’m just honored to be a part of it, that’s Dre,” Just Blaze said. “Arguably, if not, the greatest [producer]. It’s humbling because I’m one of the few producers that he really respects, and he tells me that time and time again. Him being one of the greatest, to have that kind admiration from him is crazy.”[70]

On May 21, 2011, Swizz Beatz confirmed that himself and Dr. Dre were working on both Detox, and Swizz Beatz's project, Haute Living.[71] In an interview with Billboard, DJ Khalil said that Dr. Dre was in the final stretch of Detox work.

"Dre's album is definitely the most important thing right now, because he is definitely in the final stretch. He has the record going, but I'm sure he thinks there are pieces missing still. Until he finds those pieces, maybe he's not comfortable putting it out yet."

[72]

Singles

The first single, titled "Under Pressure", featuring Jay-Z and co-produced with Scott Storch, was confirmed by Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre during an interview at Fenway Park before the first MLB game of the season.[73][74] Dr. Dre stated that he would like Interscope to release the record within two weeks of the announcement.[40] In May 2010 Dr. Dre also said that "Under Pressure's" release was pushed back due to Eminem's single "Not Afraid" being released ahead of time.[75] In an interview Storch stated that Dr. Dre was looking for the right hook for the single "Under Pressure". Scott Storch goes on to say that the hook was now ready and chosen.[76] In May 2010, Dr. Dre told Rap Up magazine that the first single, "Under Pressure" featuring Jay-Z, is going to be released "next month" and the album in fall 2010.[77] On June 16, 2010 an unmastered, unmixed version of "Under Pressure" with no chorus leaked onto the Internet.[78] Dr. Dre later talked about the leak saying

"I didn't get a chance to finish the record, the vocals are real rough, it's not blended right and there's not even a hook on the song. It's not done, the music's not done, it's just one of those things we have to deal with today in this business because of technology and all of that. It's real easy for somebody to steal your shit so what can you do?"[79]

Dr. Dre later confirmed that "Under Pressure" will not make the final cut of the album.[47]

On November 16, 2010 a song titled "Kush" leaked which features Snoop Dogg and Akon.[80] Joseph Kahn directed the music video to "Kush" which released on December 10, 2010.[80][81][82] This is the second time the trio has worked together, the first being the single "Boss' Life" which featured Akon and was produced by Dr. Dre. On the same day, Dr. Dre spoke on Radio Big Boy regarding the status of his album and the leaked song "Kush":

"I see a finish line right now, I'm wrapping it up, I need about two or three more songs and hopefully I will start the mixing process at the end of next month and from that point I am about 30 days out, so I'm excited about it." "It ["Kush"] got leaked, it was a version of it that got leaked that I wasn't really happy about, so we are gonna go in push it and put it out because everyone seems to like it. Y'know I just thought, like, the content it's about weed smoking and I don't want people to think that's what my album is about, this is actually the only song with that type of content in it."[83]

Later that same day, a mastered version of "Kush" was released along with the creation of a new website.[83][84] On November 18, "Kush" was made available to purchase on iTunes.[85] It was not originally due to be released to the store until November 21,[86] but was pushed ahead due to the leakage. The song has peaked at #34 on the Billboard Hot 100.[87] The music video has been shot and released.

On November 23, producer Alex da Kid revealed that he was constantly working with Dr. Dre on Detox, confirming that the song "I Need a Doctor" was produced by him and it would be included in the album, which features Eminem and his latest signed singer, Skylar Grey.[88][89] He repeatedly referred to the song as the album's second single, and expected the song to be a huge hit once released.[90] The song was made available for purchase on iTunes on February 1, 2011,[3] and has since peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first top-ten single as lead artist on the chart in 18 years, since "Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')" reached #8 in 1993, and also making it his second highest peak on the chart ever as lead artist, behind only "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" which peaked at #2 in 1993. It has also peaked at #8 on the UK Singles Chart,[91] becoming his first top-ten single on the chart since "Bad Intentions" reached #4 in 2001.[92]

On June 18, it was revealed that Dr. Dre and 50 Cent recorded a song titled "The Psycho". It has been confirmed to be released as the third single from the album.[93]

Guests and production

Dr. Dre first mentioned Detox to the press around 2000, and since that time various producers and vocalists have contributed with potential tracks.[94] Dr. Dre bought a beat for Detox from producer J. R. Rotem in 2003, going so far as to record a track, "It Ain't a Thing". In January 2004, co-producer Scott Storch listed guest appearances by 50 Cent, Eminem, D12, The Game, Guvner, Knoc-turn'al, Lloyd Banks, and Snoop Dogg.[95] A XXL article released shortly thereafter listed many of the same performers, along with Mary J. Blige.[96] Aftermath-affiliated producers Dawaun Parker, Hi-Tek, Denaun Porter, DJ Khalil, and Focus are also working with Dr. Dre.[97][98][99] When asked about Detox by dubcnn.com, Devin the Dude claimed to have accepted an invitation to record for the album.[100] Mike Elizondo has recorded bass guitar parts for Detox.[101] An interview with Billboard revealed that J. R. Rotem will produce for the album.[102] RZA announced that he co-produced a track with Dr. Dre that features Marsha Ambrosius, which could be on Detox.[103] MP3.com has reported that Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg have also contributed to the album.[104] Jay-Z and Warren G stated that they worked with Dr. Dre.[105][106] In October 2009, MTV News reported that Dre had reached out to Jay-Z asking him to record for Detox.[36] In March 2005, Aftermath producer Mel-Man said that Dr. Dre and himself have made hundreds of beats for Detox.[107] In July 2008, it was confirmed that Nas, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne will be among guests on the album.[26] In August 2008, Ice Cube also stated he is likely to be featured.[22] In October 2008, Dr. Dre's former assistant, Bruce Williams, said Fergie might be featured on the album.[108] It has been said that T.I. has been working on the project.[109] It has recently been announced that Dr. Dre has been working in the studio with fellow Compton rapper Game on both Detox and Game's upcoming album titled The R.E.D album. A picture was posted on Game's Twitter showing himself and Dr. Dre as well as Snoop Dogg in the studio with the title reading "Can You Say Detox?" this was later confirmed by both Dr. Dre and Snoop.[110] Aftermath Producer DJ Khalil, has also been co-producing tracks on the album that feature his R&B singer protoge Kobe.[111][112] Also in August, it was revealed that Dre had hired R&B singer Rico Love, as a ghost writer and collaborator for the album.[113] Pac Div also may have ghost written on the album.[114] It was confirmed by Dre, in an interview with Radio Big Boy Dre that he had been working with several new artists on the record, including Slim da Mobster and a new artist named "Sly." He also stated that he was in the process of recording a few more songs with Snoop Dogg for the album, and looking forward to meeting and collaborating with an upcoming Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar formally known as K.Dot.[115][116] Skylar Grey is featured on the single "I Need a Doctor", which also features Eminem.[89]

Numerous people have claimed, or been seen in the studio with Dr. Dre working on the album, including Eminem, Snoop Dogg,[117] Jay-Z,[118][119] Game,[120] Ice Cube,[121][122] Lady Gaga,[123] Ashanti,[124] Busta Rhymes,[125] Common,[126] R. Kelly,[127] Raekwon,[128] T.I., Ester Dean,[129][130] Pharrell,[131] Lil Kim,[132] Lloyd,[133] J. Cole,[134] Keri Hilson,[135] Swizz Beatz,[71][136] Jay Rock and Kendrick Lamar.[137]
