Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 142.1.32.35 (talk) at 23:50, 29 March 2012 (Errors in the current or next Did you know...: "...that in Utah, '''Marion''' used to be known as Denmark?"). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 13:32 on 15 October 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article

The article describes Belshazzar's Feast as an oratorio, not a cantata. (I looked it up because I was surprised. I have sung it.) - Tenebris — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.112.29.222 (talk) 12:36, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article is in Category:Cantatas, other sources use either word, and dictionaries don't consistently describe a difference. Art LaPella (talk) 13:59, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not that it matters now -- but since you feel that way, you may want to change the linked article itself to be consistent. - Tenebris 23:47, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Errors in In the news

Template:ITN-Update A Google-search on {$2.15 2012 Dodgers} has 114,000 hits, including The New York Times[1], Los Angeles Daily News[2], and FoxBusiness.com[3]. We may as well list the new blockbuster number as $2.15 billion since everyone else will. Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 14:03, 29 March 2012 (UTC) Please consider changing the block-buster price to $2.15 billion, since all major news sources are using this price.[reply]

Errors in the current or next Did you know...

The DYK on Fedor Baranov says, "... that Fedor Baranov, a founding father of fisheries science, was saved from a Gulag by one of his students"? It should say either: "... was saved from the Gulag" or "was saved from a Gulag labor camp." The Gulag for the communist Soviet Union during most of Baranov's time is the administrative unit for the collection of forced labor colonies. He was either saved from having to appear before the Gulag, or he was saved being sent to a Gulag labor camp. --Zawadska (talk) 15:29, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the Russian language, perhaps. But please see Wiktionary:gulag. Art LaPella (talk) 17:02, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Marion

"that Marion, Utah used to be called Denmark" should read "that Marion, Utah, used to be called Denmark"; note the comma. Chris857 (talk) 18:08, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't it be a better hook if it read "Marion used to be called Denmark"?--ukexpat (talk) 18:18, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, someone just changed it away from that. Chris857 (talk) 18:26, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what it was originally, and it would be better. As just noted, Beeblebrox changed it for the worse once it was on the main page. I, too, think it should be changed back; it's far less effective now. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:30, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I added the comma according to WP:COPYEDIT#Parenthetical comma, with no comment on whether to remove "Utah" (and the commas). Art LaPella (talk) 19:54, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Better make that "...that in Utah, Marion used to be known as Denmark?" --142.1.32.35 (talk) 23:50, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
