Belgrade Beer Fest ([Beogradski festival piva, Београдски фестивал пива or Бир фест] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)) is an annual festival of beer in Belgrade, Serbia. Started in 2003, the festival is held annually over 4 to 5 days as a showcase event for various beer producers. In addition to domestic and foreign brews, the festival features live music performances each evening. It has quickly grown in size and popularity: in 2004, it attracted over 75,000 foreign visitors to Belgrade and in 2005 it was the second most visited festival in Serbia with 300,000 visitors. In 2009 it attracted more than 650,000 visitors, and in 2010 the festival attracted about 900,000 visitors.[1][2]

The festival entrance is free.

History

2003

In 2003, the Festival was held for the first time at the Kalemegdan Fortress. It lasted from August 21 to August 24. The sport program included a field hockey tournament, and badminton and basketball matches. The musical program was divided into two parts: the rock, pop and world music acts performed from 18:00 until 00:30 and DJs from 00:30 until 05:00. The festival featured mostly acts from Serbia and other former Yugoslav republics: Psihomodo Pop, Neno Belan & Fiumens, Hladno Pivo, Sunshine, Orthodox Celts (the only act which appeared on every Belgrade Beer Fest so far, except Belgrade Beer Fest 2004, when their performance, alongside the whole program for August 21 and 22 was canceled), Eyesburn, Tir na n'Og, So Sabi, Intruder, Rare, Vroom, and others.

2004

The festival was held at Kalemegdan Fortress from August 19 to August 22. On August 19, musical program featured Lude Krawe, Grandpa Candys, Cactus Jack, Rapid Force, Negative, Hladno Pivo, and Irish Stew of Sindidun, among others. On August 20, Kraljevski Apartman, Gang Bangers, E-Play, Van Gogh, Night Shift, Saša Lokner, among others, performed. The musical program scheduled for August 21 and 22 was canceled due to the storm that damaged the stage.

2005

The festival was held at Kalemegdan Fortress. For the first time the festival lasted for five days, from August 17 to August 21. On August 17, musical program featured Irish Stew of Sindidun, Sirova Koža, Prljavi Inspektor Blaža i Kljunovi, Van Gogh, Ljubiša Stojanović "Louis", and others. On August 18, musical program featured Tir na n'Og, Đorđe David & Gang, Tanja Jovićević, Darko Rundek, Delča i Sklekovi, and Zona B, among others. On August 19, the lineup included Kraljevski Apartman, Najda & Gale, Sunshine, and Shiroko. On August 18, Ljute Papričice (who performed a tribute to Red Hot Chili Peppers), Point Blank, So Sabi, Orthodox Celts, Del Arno Band, and other acts performed. The last evening of the festival featured several less known acts.

On December 31, 2005 the British newspaper The Independent named Belgrade Beer Fest "one of the worldwide events to visit in 2006".[3]

2006

The festival was held at Kalemegdan Fortress from August 16 to August 20. On August 16, musical program included Šinobusi, Belgrade Dixieland Orchestra, Zvonko Bogdan, Plava Trava Zaborava, Šukar, So Sabi, and others. On August 17, 357, Alogia, Eyesburn, Atomsko Sklonište and Orthodox Celts, among others, performed. On August 18, Tir na n'Og, Omar Naber, Damir Urban, Van Gogh, Električni Orgazam, Ljubiša Stojanović "Louis", and other acts performed. On August 19, the lineup included Irish Stew of Sindidun, Đorđe David & Gang, Superhiks, Rambo Amadeus, Zabranjeno Pušenje and DJ Kevin Saunderson. The last day of the festival, August 20, featured performances by tribute bands.

2007

The 2007 Festival was held at Kalemegdan Fortress from August 15 to August 19. For 2007 Festival, the second stage, sponsored by Beck's, was added. Beck'sperience Stage featured electronic music acts, while the Main Stage featured rock, pop and world music acts. The acts that appeared on the Main Stage on the first day of the festival included Trigger, Đura i Mornari, Nikola Čuturilo, Prljavi Inspektor Blaža i Kljunovi, EKV Revisited, Ljubiša Stojanović "Louis", Neno Belan & Fiumens, and other acts. The acts that appeared on the Main Stage on August 16 included Leonardo, Osmi Putnik, Dan D, Vlatko Stefanovski, YU grupa, Vatreni Poljubac and Deca Loših Muzičara. The acts that appeared on the Main Stage on August 17 included Rare, Kristali, Najda & Gale, Psihomodo Pop, Foltin, E-Play and Kraljevski Apartman. The bands that performed on the Main Stage on August 18 included Čovek Bez Sluha, Elvis Jackson, Del Arno Band, Orthodox Celts, So Sabi. On the last day of the festival, the Main Stage featured Zona B, Elvis J. Kurtović, Emir & Frozen Camels featuring Danny Shepard, and Van Gogh.

Incident

On the last day of the festival the body of a 22-year old Branko Jovanović from Belgrade was found dead and partially consumed in the bear cage at the Belgrade Zoo (also located at the Fortress). It is believed that the man, possibly drunk or drugged, may have fallen from a restaurant overlooking the bear cage, which is an open-air structure, with no roof. Two adult bears had dragged the man's body to the feeding corner of the cage.[4] The investigation department of the court claimed that there were no indications that the young man was murdered.[5]

2008

In 2008, the Festival moved to Ušće park. It was held from August 20 to August 24. The musical program on the first evening of the festival featured Šank Rock, KUD Idijoti, Dragoljub Đuričić & Drummers, Prljavi Inspektor Blaža i Kljunovi, Ljubiša Stojanović "Louis", among others. The program on August 21 included performances by Big Foot Mama, Kanda, Kodža i Nebojša, Generacija 5, Film, Dubioza Kolektiv, Atomsko Sklonište and Carne Cruda. On August 22, the music program included performances by Block Out, Galija, Kiril Džajkovski and Timo Maas. The acts that performed on August 23 included Goribor, Atheist Rap, Dado Topić & Time, Orthodox Celts, Darkwood Dub and Sunshine. The last evening of the festival included performances by Oružjem Protivu Otmičara, Nervozni Poštar, Vrelo, Arhangel, Van Gogh, and other acts.

2009

In 2009, the Festival was once again held at Ušće park. It lasted from August 12 to August 16. On the first night of the festival musical program featured Zvonko Bogdan, Wickeda, Laibach, Stereo MC's and Strip, among others. The acts that performed on August 13 included Odjila, Divlje Jagode, Darko Rundek & Cargo Orkestar, Rambo Amadeus, LMT Connection, Letu Štuke and Esma Redžepova. On August 14, the program featured Rapid Force, Vatra, Aleksandra Pileva, Psihomodo Pop and Orthodox Celts, among others. On August 15 Toni Kitanovski & Čerkezi Orkestar, Let 3, Emir & Frozen Camels, among others, performed. On the last day of the Festival, the lineup featured Valentino, Vlatko Stefanovski and Kiki Lesendrić & Piloti, among others.

The motto of the 2009 Festival was "Biram da recikliram" (I Choose to Recycle").

2010

The 2010 Belgrade Beer Fest was at Ušće Park and lasted for five days, from August 18 to August 22. The acts on the first night of the festival included Instant Karma, Zdenka Kovačiček (who performed a tribute to Janis Joplin), Ana Popović, Partibrejkers, Kiril Džajkovski, Gramophonedzie, and Benny Benassi. The acts that performed on the second night of the festival included Zona B, Legende, Jurica Pađen & Aerodrom, Riblja Čorba, Prljavi Inspektor Blaža i Kljunovi, S.A.R.S., and Kal. The acts that performed on the third night included Pankrti, Bajaga i Instruktori, Del Arno Band, and Skroz, as well as several tribute bands. On the fourth night of the festival Siddharta, Sunshine, YU grupa, Orthodox Celts, and Ljubiša Stojanović "Louis", among others, performed. The lineup on the last evening of the 2010 festival featured Bilja Krstić & Bistrik Orchestra, Dejan Cukić, Neno Belan & Fiumens, and Van Gogh, among others.[6]

The motto of the 2010 festival was also "Biram da recikliram" ("I Choose to Recycle").

2011

The 2011 Belgrade Beer Fest was held from August 17 to August 21.[7] The acts which performed on August 17 included Šinobusi, Vasil Hadžimanov Band, maNga, Negative, Riblja Čorba, and Marky Ramones Blitzkrieg. The acts which performed on August 18 included Zvonko Bogdan, Sevdah Baby, Magnifico, Simple Minds, Hypnotized, Goblini, and Orthodox Celts. On August 19, Garavi Sokak, Svremenaši, S.A.R.S., Dubioza Kolektiv, Kerber, and Atomsko Sklonište, among others, performed. Pips, Chips & Videoclips, Zemlja Gruva, Jura Stublić & Film, Uli Jon Roth, Boris Leiner & Pozdrav Azri, and Dejan Petrović Big Band, among others, performed on August 20. The acts which performed on the last day of the festival, August 21, included Emir & Frozen Camels, Svi Na Pod!, Lollobrigida, Sanja Ilić & Balkanika, and Kiki Lesendrić i Piloti.[8]

2012

The 2012 Belgrade Beer Fest will be held from August 14 to August 19. The acts which will perform on August 14 include Toni Montano, Kiki Lesendrić & Piloti, Električni Orgazam, Plejboj, and Vampiri. The acts which will perform on August 15 include Obojeni Program, Hladno Pivo, Vlatko Stefanovski, and Rambo Amadeus. On August 16, Ritam Nereda, Zoran Predin & Cover Lover, Galija, Dado Topić & Time After Time, Psihomodo Pop, and Pekinška Patka will perform. Bilja Krstić & Bistrik Orchestra, Plavi Orkestar, YU grupa, Zabranjeno Pušenje, Prljavi Inspektor Blaža i Kljunovi, and Dejan Petrović Big Band will performed on August 18. The acts which will perform on August 18 include Love Hunters, Crvena Jabuka, Siddharta, Sunshine, Orthodox Celts, Kiril Džajkovski, and Pete Tong. The acts which will perform on the last evening of the festival, August 19, include Zona B, Đura & Mornari, Valentino, Partibrejkers, and Van Gogh.[9]
