Vidya Balan (pronounced [ʋɪd̪jaː baːlən]; born 1 January 1978)[1] is an Indian film actress, who appears in Hindi, Bengali and Malayalam cinema. Balan started her acting career in the Hindi TV series Hum Paanch in 1995. Afterwards, she acted in several TV commercials and music videos while attempting unsuccessfully to launch a career in the film. Her feature film debut came in 2003 in the independent Bengali drama Bhalo Theko.

Balan has received several awards and nominations. Parineeta (2005), which was her Hindi film debut, she received Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and Filmfare face of the year, and was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actress.[2] In 2008, she was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Bhool Bhulaiyaa. In 2010, she received her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in Paa. In 2011 her performance in the black comedy thriller Ishqiya earned her the fourth nomination of Filmfare Award for Best Actress and won her the first Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics' Choice). In 2012, she received two nominations for Filmfare Award for Best Actress for the films No One Killed Jessica and The Dirty Picture, which was won for The Dirty Picture which also led her to win the National Film Award for Best Actress.[3]
