Vidya Balan (pronounced [ʋɪd̪jaː baːlən]; born 1 January 1978)[1] is an Indian film actress, who appears in Hindi, Bengali and Malayalam cinema. Balan started her acting career in the Hindi TV series Hum Paanch in 1995. Afterwards, she acted in several TV commercials and music videos while attempting unsuccessfully to launch a career in the film. Her feature film debut came in 2003 in the independent Bengali drama Bhalo Theko.
Balan has received various awards and nominations. Among the awards Balan has received are one National Award and five Filmfare Awards. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for The Dirty Picture (2012).[2] Her Filmfare Awards include Best Female Debut and Face of the year for Parineeta (2005),[3] Best Actress for Paa (2009) and The Dirty Picture, and Critics Award for Best Actress for Ishqiya (2010). Her performances in Parineeta, Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2008), Ishqiya, and No One Killed Jessica (2011) earned her the nomination of Filmfare Award for Best Actress. In Asian Film Awards she was nominated for Best Actress for The Dirty Picture.[4]
