In Somalia, higher education or tertiary education was exclusively public manner and institutions offering university study starting with the Somali National University or(SNU) founded in 1954 were all public. As there were no such things as private university in Somalia, the national public university system in Somalia provided education, housing, medical and meals, all for free to Somalia students as well the few foreign students studying in Mogadishu and Lafoole [1].

SNU had two main campuses; Gaheyr, an sprawling campus at KM6 of Mogadishu with modern campus and Lafoole, the main teachers college in Somalia from early 1960s to 1991 at the start of the civil war. Lafoole University became an stand alone institution. Special schools such as military academy, agricultural other post-secondary schools offered education for high school graduates.

All regular high school and technical school graduates totaling more than 8,000 students wrote university entrance exam each year. Only a small percentage found seats at the university. The following is a list of universities in Somalia.
