Emmelie Charlotte-Victoria de Forest (born 28 February 1993; née Emmelie Engstrøm), better known as "Emmelie de Forest", is a Danish singer. She will represent Denmark with the song "Only Teardrops" in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden.
She signed to the label Universal Music on 25 March 2013 and her first album Only Teardrops is set to be released in May 2013.
Early life
Emmelie de Forest was born to a Danish mother and Swedish father and started singing at age 9.[1] At 14 years, she collaborated with Scottish musician Fraser Neill, including appearances in many festival and cultural centres. In 2011, she moved from Mariager, Nordjylland to Copenhagen and registered at Katrine Sadolins "Complete Vocal Institute" for singing students.[citation needed]
Music career
2013–present: Eurovision Song Contest and Only Teardrops
Emmelie de Forest was one of ten acts bidding to represent Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 in Malmö, Sweden with her entry "Only Teardrops".[2] On 26 January 2013, she won the national selection.[2]
On 14 April, Emmelie de Forest announced that her debut album, Only Teardrops, will be released on 6 May, a week before her performance in the Eurovision.[2] The album will have twelve songs, including the original and symphonic versions "Only Teardrops".[3][4]
On 14 May, Emmelie de Forests song "Only Teardrops" made it to the final of the Eurovision on 18 May, being one of the ten finalists.[4]
According to gambling sites Emmelie de Forest is the great favourite to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2013.[5]
Personal life
She is the daughter of Ingvar Engström (1938–2010), a Swedish commoner and son of Irma Engström, who late in life adopted the surname de Forest. Her father claimed to be the natural son (out of wedlock) of Maurice Arnold de Forest, a claim which remains unsubstantiated.[6] Maurice Arnold de Forest was himself the son of two American circus artists, became an orphan and was adopted by a wealthy couple.[7]
Media attention about claim of royal ancestors
When she participated in the Danish MGP competition, she introduced herself saying that "my full name is Emmelie Charlotte Victoria de Forest, and my great-great-grandmother was Queen Victoria of England". In media interviews, she elaborated on her claim, saying that she was also a descendant of King Edward VII, claiming that he had an illegitimate child by an Austrian Habsburg princess.[8][9][10] The claim of descent from Queen Victoria was originally used as a part of the marketing strategy, but this strategy was dropped by the DR broadcaster[11][8][12] after the claim was disputed by different genealogists.[13][14][7][15][16] Although her claim has been rejected by professional genealogists, she maintains that the story is true.[17]
