Once Upon a Time title card.

The first season introduces a bail bond agent, Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) and her birth-son, Henry (Jared S. Gilmore) who discover that a New England town, aptly named Storybrooke, Maine, is actually a remnant of a parallel world that was cu rsed by The Evil Queen/Regina Mills (Lana Parrilla) and that all the characters from the fairy tales have no memories of who they were, including the parents of Emma: Snow White/Mary Margaret Blanchard (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming/David Nolan (Josh Dallas), who sent her to the real world to save their world and break the curse.

Following the curse being eventually broken by Emma, Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) brings magic to Storybrooke and the characters reunite as their true selves. It is revealed that crossing the border surrounding Storybrooke will remove the inhabitants' fairytale memories again. Other main storylines in the second season includes the revelation of Rumplestiltskin's son Baelfire also being Henry's father - under his real-world alias Neal Cassidy (Michael Raymond-James), and the outsiders Greg Mendell (Ethan Embry) and Tamara (Sonequa Martin-Green) on their quest to destroy magic from Storybrooke. After failing to use the curse's trigger to destroy the town, the pair kidnap Henry and take him to Neverland. Emma, Mary Margaret, David, Regina and Mr. Gold join Captain Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) on his ship to travel through a portal to rescue Henry. Upon arrival in Neverland, Peter Pan (Robbie Kay) retrieves Henry, keeping possession of him with help from the Lost Boys.

Emma Swan is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, and Henry Mills' birth mother.

Emma was born on the day that the Evil Queen Regina casts her curse. Geppetto forms a magical wardrobe for Snow and Charming, after Rumplestiltskin informs them that their daughter is the key to breaking the curse in 28 years. Emma is born shortly after and placed in the wardrobe, successfully travelling to the new land.[2] In the real world, Emma is separated from her parents, growing up in foster care. She becomes a criminal, stealing with Neal Cassidy. Together, they plan to start a life together, until Neal is persuaded by August Booth (Pinocchio) to turn Emma into the police to protect her destiny as the saviour of Storybrooke. Emma is jailed, later giving birth to Henry,[3] whom she places him up for adoption to give him a better life.[4] On her 28th birthday, a ten-year-old Henry comes to her apartment in Boston, explaining her origins. She does not believe him, returning him home to his adoptive mother Regina Mills (The Evil Queen) in Storybrooke. Regina is worried that Emma may want to be in Henry's life and her repeated warnings to leave town and keep away from Henry, make Emma decide to stay.[2]

In Storybrooke, Emma is often at odds with Regina, who doesn't want Emma to be in Henry's life. Emma tries to get Henry to let go of his theories about the curse, but later accepts the fact that Henry will not give it up.[5] Emma eventually moves in with Mary Margaret (Snow White), neither aware that they're related. Sheriff Graham Humbert (The Huntsman) later appoints Emma as his deputy and the two form an attraction,[6] until Regina crushes his heart, causing him to die in Emma's arms.[7] Emma is later elected sheriff, assisting in the arrest of Mary Margaret for the alleged murder of Kathryn Nolan, until she is found alive.[8] Emma later becomes suspicious of a new man in town, August Booth, who reveals his true identity as Pinocchio and Emma's destiny of breaking the curse. She insists that she cannot handle the responsibility of being a "saviour", and decides to leave Storybrooke with Henry until he forces her to return. However, she eventually decides to leave Storybrooke for good, telling Regina that she does not want Henry to suffer from their feud. Regina, however, gives Emma an apple turnover infused with a sleeping curse. Henry eats it instead to prove that magic exists, causing him to fall unconscious. Emma finally believes that the curse is real, but Henry is pronounced dead. He is then awoken by Emma with true love's kiss, thus breaking the curse and allowing all residents to remember their true identities.[9]

After the curse is broken, Emma reunites with her parents. In a plan to send a wraith released into Storybrooke into a portal, Emma and Mary Margaret are dragged with it.[10] In the remaining part of the Enchanted Forest, they meet Princess Aurora and Mulan who eventually help them return to Storybrooke.[11][12] Back in Storybrooke, Emma is persuaded by Mr. Gold to travel with him to Manhattan to find his son Baelfire. Emma soon discovers that Baelfire is her ex-boyfriend Neal.[3] They return to Storybrooke where Emma is forced to deal with the outsider Greg Mendell entering Storybrooke,[13] as well as Neal's fiancée Tamara who he invites to Storybrooke. Emma's skeptical theories on the pair are proven to be correct when it is revealed that Greg and Tamara are working together to destroy the town and magic. Neal is wounded during a fight with Tamara when a portal is opened, and he falls through - before learning that the he and Emma still love one another.[14] Greg and Tamara then activate a trigger to destroy Storybrooke, but it is stopped by Emma and Regina. The former pair instead kidnap Henry, using a magic bean to transport to Neverland. Emma, her parents, Regina, Hook and Mr. Gold join forces to follow them with Hook's ship.[15] Upon arriving at Neverland, Emma becomes the main leader of the group, reluctantly acknowledging her true identity as a "lost girl". Emma later saves Neal from the Echo Caves upon revealing her darkest secret: she hoped Neal was truly dead as it would have been easier for her to get over her heartbreak.

Henry Mills Jared S. Gilmore 1,2,3 50[16] Alive
Henry Mills is Emma Swan and Neal Cassidy's 11-year-old son, whom she gave up for adoption after giving birth in jail.[2][17] He is also Snow White, Prince Charming and Rumplestiltskin's grandson. He is adopted by Regina Mills (The Evil Queen), who finds him through Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin); Henry is named after Regina's father.[4]

Henry receives his cherished book of fairy tales from his teacher Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White) and discovers that the residents of Storybrooke are characters from the book after noticing he is the only one in town who ages.[2][5] His realisation of Regina's true identity strains his relationship with her, and she sends him to regular therapy sessions with Dr. Archie Hopper to end his unwavering belief in the curse.[4] Hoping to break the curse and learn why he was put up for adoption, Henry finds his biological mother Emma Swan in Boston and brings her to Storybrooke.[2] He eventually convinces Emma of the truth by eating a poisoned apple turnover containing a sleeping curse,[18] ultimating in him being pronounced dead. However, he is awoken with true love's kiss by Emma, also breaking the curse.[9]

After the curse is broken, Emma and Mary Margaret are dragged into a portal, leaving his grandfather David (Prince Charming) to look after him.[10] Regina initially refuses to let go of Henry, until she realises that she does not want the same fate for him that she endured.[11] Following the death of Regina's mother Cora, and Regina vowing to exact her revenge on Mary Margaret, Henry seeks to remove magic from Storybrooke. When Emma and Regina stop the trigger introduced by Greg Mendell and Tamara from destroying Storybrooke, he is kidnapped by the pair and transported to Neverland, where it is revealed that Peter Pan wants possession of him.[15] Upon arrival at Neverland, it is revealed that Greg and Tamara were tricked by the "Home Office", whose real identities are confirmed to be the Lost Boys. As Henry runs from the pair, he befriends a "fugitive boy" and they use fairy dust to escape. However, the boy then reveals that he is in fact Peter Pan and wants Henry, as "the heart of the truest believer" belongs to him. Henry is then kept in the jungle by the Lost Boys as Pan encourages the dark urges in him.

Snow White is the daughter of King Leopold and Queen Eva, and later stepdaughter of The Evil Queen Regina.[2][20] She is the true love of Prince Charming, mother of Emma Swan, and later grandmother of her son Henry.

As a young girl, Snow White's mother dies from Cora poisoning her in an attempt to make her daughter Regina Queen. Snow is later rescued from a runaway horse by Regina which leads to her having a loveless marriage with Snow's father. After Regina assumes the throne by killing the King, she recruits The Huntsman to kill Snow; he spared her for her selflessness.[7] Snow then lives in the forest, meeting Prince David while robbing him who she nicknames Charming. The pair fall in love, but he returns to his fiancée Princess Abigail.[6] She then moves in with The Seven Dwarfs and Charming breaks off his engagement[21] though The Evil Queen holds him captive.[22] In exchange for Charming's life, Snow eats an apple from the Queen containing a sleeping curse.[18] David breaks free of his imprisonment and awakens her with true love's kiss. The two are later married, though The Evil Queen announces that she will place a curse on everyone to destroy their happiness. Snow gives birth to Emma and as the curse takes hold, she is placed in a magical wardrobe and transported to the real world.[2]

In Storybrooke, she appears as Mary Margaret Blanchard, Henry Mills' favourite teacher at Storybrooke Elementary School.[2] As a part-time volunteer at Storybrooke General Hospital, she awakens David Nolan (Prince Charming) from his coma, and the pair gradually fall in love, despite David's marriage to Kathryn Nolan (Princess Abigail).[6] Eventually beginning a secret relationship, the affair becomes public and David's marriage breaks down. Mary Margaret becomes an outcast in the town, but is later re-accepted by residents after helping the local nunnery pay its rent.[21][23][24] She is arrested for Kathryn's apparent murder after evidence connected to her is discovered.[25] Emma believes that she is innocent, later proven to be correct when Kathryn is found alive. Her relationship with David becomes strained as he did not believe she was innocent.[26] He eventually decides to leave Storybrooke, but they are reunited when the curse is broken, and they regain their memories.[9]

After the curse is broken, Mary Margaret reunites with Charming and Emma, only to be transported with Emma back to the untouched part of the Enchanted Forest through a portal. They meet Princess Aurora and Mulan who assist them in travelling back to Storybrooke.[11] In Storybrooke, Regina and her mother Cora join forces and attempt to gain power by killing Mr. Gold. Tired of constantly losing by being good, Mary Margaret curses Cora's heart with the same candle that Cora used to kill her mother Eva. She then tricks Regina into restoring Cora's poisoned heart, killing her. She pleads for Regina to kill her when she cannot deal with what she has done, but Regina taunts her by showing her blackened heart as a result of her actions. When Henry is captured by Greg Mendell and Tamara and taken to Neverland, Mary Margaret travels with Emma, David, Regina, Mr. Gold, and Captain Hook to rescue him.[15] In order to save Henry's father Neal in the Echo Caves, she reveals to David that her darkest secret is feeling robbed of Emma's childhood, and therefore wanting another baby when they return to Storybrooke. David however then informs her that he cannot leave Neverland due to his Dreamshade poisoning.

Prince Charming David Nolan Josh Dallas 1,2,3 46[27] Alive

Prince "Charming" David was originally a poor shepherd whose twin brother was given to King George as an heir in a deal with Rumplestiltskin. The real Prince James is killed in battle and the shepherd takes his brother's name in exchange for the prosperity of his mother's farm and the promise that he can return home afterward. He is also the true love of Snow White, father of Emma Swan, and later grandfather of Henry.

After he slays the dragon, King Midas declares David worthy to marry his daughter Abigail and unite the kingdoms. David wants to marry for love and therefore tries to decline, but George vows to kill his mother Ruth if he does.[28] Before his marriage, he falls in love with Snow White (who nicknames him Charming),[6] later inviting her to run away together. After interceptions by George, the pair are continuously separated, leading to The Evil Queen capturing him to convince Snow to willingly eat an apple containing a sleeping curse.[18][21][22][23] He later awakens Snow and the pair marry. At their wedding, the Queen announces that she will cast a curse on the Enchanted Forest to take away everyone's happiness. Rumplestiltskin informs them that the daughter they are expecting will break the curse in 28 years. Emma is born shortly before the curse takes hold, and Charming places her in a magical wardrobe to protect her from the curse, though he is wounded by the Queen's knights in the process.[2]

In Storybrooke, he first appears as a comatose John Doe, who has gone unidentified for years.[2] He awakens after Mary Margaret (Snow White) reads him the story of Snow White and Prince Charming. He is then reunited with his wife Kathryn Nolan (Princess Abigail), and identified as David Nolan.[6] David suffers from amnesia and cannot remember his life with Kathryn. He falls in love with Mary Margaret and decides to leave Kathryn for her. His false memories of his marriage begin to return and he decides to work things out with Kathryn.[28] He eventually gives in to his attraction to Mary Margaret and begins an affair with her.[21] Kathryn is later accepted to a school in Boston and David suggests they end their marriage. Kathryn learns of his affair and disappears.[23] David becomes a suspect in her disappearance, until evidence against Mary Margaret killing Kathryn mounts.[25] When Kathryn is revealed to be alive, he attempts to reconcile with Mary Margaret, but she refuses to speak to him as he did not believe her innocence.[22][26] He decides to move to Boston alone; as he approaches the town limits, the curse is broken and he regains his memories. He returns to town and reunites with Snow, Emma and Henry.[9] When David agrees to send a wraith released into Storybrooke into a portal, Emma and Mary Margaret are dragged with it. Upon Henry's wishes, Regina lets David take care of Henry while Emma and Mary Margaret are absent.[10] After failing attempts of transportation to their location, David falls under a sleeping curse to communicate with Mary Margaret in her dreams. Upon her return to Storybrooke, he is awoken by true love's kiss. When Henry is taken to Neverland by new arrivals Greg Mendell and Tamara, David travels with Mary Margaret, Emma, Regina, Mr. Gold, and Captain Hook to the location in order to rescue him.[15] Upon arrival at Neverland, David is struck by a poisoned arrow, which he disguises from the rest of the group. However, Hook cures him with the waters of Neverland, though David cannot leave the land as a side effect of the healing waters.

The Evil Queen Regina Mills Lana Parrilla 1,2,3 50[29] Alive

Queen Regina is the daughter of Cora and Henry. She becomes the second wife of King Leopold and the step-mother of Snow White.[20] She later adopts Emma Swan's biological son and names him Henry. She is later known as "The Evil Queen", the main antagonist of the series.

As a young woman, Regina's mother Cora sets up Regina's marrying King Leopold, killing her true love Daniel to prevent her running off with him.[30] Since Snow revealed to Cora Regina's attraction to Daniel, Regina vowed to destroy Snow's happiness to avenge her lost happy ending.[7] While preparing for her wedding, she meets Rumplestiltskin who teaches her magic and promises to help her be rid of her mother, eventually sending Cora through a looking glass. She remains unhappy in her loveless relationship, so obtains control of a Genie and uses him to kill the King,[20] making her ruler of Leopold's realm.[7] As an older Snow White and Prince Charming take back the kingdom, The Evil Queen is banished, later being informed by Rumplestiltskin that she could harm Snow and Charming if they were in another world. On the day of the couple's wedding, The Evil Queen vows to cast a curse on the inhabitants of the Enchanted Forest that will take away their happiness.[2] She must use the heart of the thing she loves most to enact the curse. Understanding this to be her father Henry, she cuts out his heart and casts the curse.[4]

In Storybrooke, she is Mayor Regina Mills.[2] With Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin)'s help, she adopts Henry Mills as a baby, not knowing that he is the grandson of Snow White and Prince Charming.[2][4] Her relationship with Henry is strained as he prefers the company of his birth mother Emma Swan.[6] Regina is determined to convince Henry that his theory about the curse is false, starting him on regular sessions with therapist Dr. Archie Hopper (Jiminy Cricket).[4] She has a sexual relationship with Sheriff Graham Humbert (The Huntsman), but crushes his heart when he breaks up with her, revealing that she remembers her identity as The Evil Queen.[7] The power struggle between Regina and Rumplestiltskin continues in Storybrooke where she is constantly at odds with Mr. Gold.[31][32][33] He helps Emma defeat Regina's candidate for Sheriff.[31] Unbeknownst to him, Regina is holding Belle, Gold's true love, captive underneath the Storybrooke Hospital.[33] She tries to prevent the relationship between David Nolan (Prince Charming) and Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White), by reuniting David and his wife Kathryn Nolan (Princess Abigail). When the pair start an affair, she uses this to discredit Mary Margaret after the Nolans' marriage falls apart.[6][23] After Kathryn goes missing, Mary Margaret is set up and arrested for her apparent murder. Regina is upset when Gold returns her alive. Emma tells Regina she knows the truth and declares her intentions to get Henry back.[26] She then makes an apple turnover to poison Emma, but Henry willingly eats it instead, falling under a sleeping curse and ultimately making Emma realize the curse's reality.[18] Henry dies shortly after, only to be awoken by true love's kiss from Emma, also breaking the curse.[9]

Upon realizing their true identities, Mr. Gold summons a wraith to harm Regina in retaliation to her abducting Belle. It is sent through a portal into the Enchanted Forest, though Emma and Mary Margaret fall through as well. Henry is heartbroken, telling Regina he never wishes to see her again until she returns them to Storybrooke.[10] Regina later takes back Henry after reclaiming her magic, but realizes that she is behaving like her mother to force Henry to stay with her; she offers to let Henry live with David.[11] Later, Dr. Whale reanimates Daniel (Regina's true love)'s corpse but he becomes a mindless monster. He urges Regina to move on and love again, who then turns him to dust, seeking consolation in Archie Hopper. When her mother arrives in Storybrooke, Cora convinces Regina to look for The Dark One's dagger to control and force him to kill their enemies, leaving her innocent in Henry's eyes. Cora later dies during the fight to protect Mr. Gold, with Regina holding Mary Margaret accountable. Captain Hook warns Regina about newcomers Greg Mendell and Tamara, who offered him a deal to help them take magic from Storybrooke. He tells Regina that he can help her by betraying the outsiders and offering his services. Regina agrees and tells Hook that Storybrooke has a fail-safe trigger that will destroy the town, enabling her to escape with Henry. Hook betrays her, and she discovers that Greg is in fact Owen Flynn, a boy she befriended at the beginning of the curse, who has returned to find his father that went missing after Regina had him arrested. Greg and Tamara activate the trigger to destroy Storybrooke, but Regina and Emma stop them. Henry is then captured by the pair and taken to Neverland. Regina travels with Emma, Mary Margaret, David, Mr. Gold, and Hook in order to rescue Henry.[15] Originally collaborating with the rest of the group, she later tires of the slow journey, teaming up with Mr. Gold to summon Ariel and locate her to Storybrooke to retrieve an immobilization item from Gold's shop.

Rumplestiltskin Mr. Gold Robert Carlyle 1,2,3 44[34] Alive
Robert Carlyle
Rumplestiltskin is a whimsical yet sinister sorcerer who delights in making deals with desperate people. Rumplestiltskin is also The Dark One, the Beast and the ticking crocodile that cost Captain Hook his left hand. He is the true love of Belle, father to Baelfire/Neal Cassidy, and paternal grandfather to Emma Swan's biological son Henry.

Rumplestiltskin was originally a poor spinner who deserted from the Ogre Wars. His wife Milah is disgusted by this and leaves him for a pirate named Killian Jones. His son Baelfire is to join the Ogre Wars, but Rumplestiltskin gains the power of The Dark One and prevents it.[31] Baelfire wants him to get rid of his powers, creating a portal to transport them to a world without magic. Rumplestiltskin is too afraid to lose his powers, leaving Baelfire to cross over alone. Rumplestiltskin vows that he will create a curse to reunite with his son.[26] Rumplestiltskin becomes the most powerful being in the Enchanted Forest, entering a power struggle with his former student, The Evil Queen Regina,[2][22] and making deals with other characters from the forest, constantly warning them that "magic always comes at a price."[21][32][35] He later meets Killian Jones again and learns that Milah willingly went with him. In the ensuing fight, he kills Milah and cuts off Jones' hand, leading Jones to become Captain Hook. As part of a deal to save her town, Belle becomes the caretaker of his estate. The pair form a romantic bond until Belle learns from The Evil Queen that true love's kiss will break any curse, kissing him. Rumplestiltskin believes that Belle is working for the Queen and forces her to leave forever, telling her that his power is more important to him than she is. Later, the Queen visits him and claims that Belle has committed suicide. Soon after, he is made powerless and placed into a custom made jail cell.[32] The Evil Queen takes possession of his curse, asking that she give him a place of comfort and respect in the "new world" the curse will send them to, in exchange for telling her how to set the curse in motion.[4]

In Storybrooke, he is Mr. Gold, the owner of a pawn shop and the town's wealthiest resident. He remembers his true identity,[33] having helped build the town and owning most of it.[2] He finds a boy named Henry after Regina feels lonely, only for her to later learn that he is Emma Swan's biological son.[4] He helps Emma to get elected as Sheriff after Graham Humbert's death,[31] and offers his legal services to Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White) as she is accused of the murder of Kathryn Nolan (Princess Abigail).[22] It is later revealed that Gold kidnapped Kathryn in a deal with Regina, after she is found alive. When Henry consumes an apple turnover made by Regina for Emma, he tricks Emma into retrieving a bottle of true love and giving it to him. Gold is then reunited with Belle, who is finally released from the hospital asylum by Jefferson. He uses the bottle of true love to bring magic back to Storybrooke.[9] Gold promises Belle that he will not kill Regina for abducting her, though he summons a wraith into the town to kill her. Heartbroken that he betrayed her, Belle leaves him. When Gold's plan fails, Belle returns and they reconcile.[10]

Gold is later enraged upon learning that anyone who attempts to leave Storybrooke will have their magical memories erased, as he had planned to leave town to search for Baelfire. Gold begins to experiment with magic, eventually finding a way to cross the magic barrier. As he prepares to leave the town, Captain Hook shoots Belle causing her to fall over the town line and lose her memory. Upon realizing his son is in Manhattan, he asks Emma Swan to be his guide outside of Storybrooke, along with Henry. Emma and Gold track him down only to find that he is Neal Cassidy, Henry's father. Gold also discovers that Henry is his grandson. He attempts to make amends with his son but Neal declines his offers, saying that magic won't fix their problems.[36] After the group are forced to return to Storybrooke when Gold is attacked by Hook, Gold begins to die. He is healed when Cora's poisoned heart is returned to her body by Regina before she manages to stab him with The Dark One's dagger. Gold later obtains a potion to restore Belle's memories. After Henry is captured by Greg Mendell and Tamara and taken through a portal, Mr. Gold uses his globe to track them to Neverland. He makes a temporary truce with Hook, agreeing to take him, Emma, Mary Margaret, David, and Regina to Neverland.[15] Upon arrival at Neverland, he separates from the rest of the ship's members entering the jungle, where he acknowledges to lost boy Felix that he knows he will die but he has to complete the task to fulfil his prophecy. He is frequently visited by Belle, who he partially believes is a subconscious of his imagination. However, Regina later reveals to him that she is Peter Pan's shadow in disguise. He then works with Regina, summoning Ariel and locating her to Storybrooke to retrieve an immobilization item from his shop.

Belle Lacey Emilie de Ravin 2,3 1 21[37] Alive
Emilie de Ravin
Belle is the daughter of Sir Maurice who rules a realm threatened by the Ogre Wars. When Rumplestiltskin offers to protect Maurice's realm, his condition is that Belle becomes the caretaker of his estate. Belle accepts the deal and over time, the pair form a bond until Belle learns from The Evil Queen Regina that true love's kiss will break any curse. She kisses him, but he mistakenly believes that she is working for the Queen and forces Belle to leave forever. The Queen later visits Rumplestiltskin, telling him that Belle committed suicide upon becoming an outcast in her own town.

In Storybrooke, Belle is hidden by Regina underneath the town's hospital for 28 years.[33] She is later released by Jefferson and finds Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin), later professing her love for him when the curse is broken. Belle stands beside him as he brings magic to Storybrooke.[9] In retaliation to her imprisonment, Belle begs Rumplestiltskin not to kill Regina, which he agrees to. However, she is left heartbroken when she learns that he has unleashed a wraith to exact his revenge on Regina, leaving him. Later, she returns after Regina is left unharmed.[10] When Gold finds a way to cross the barrier out of Storybrooke without losing his memories, Belle is shot by Captain Hook before they part, causing her to fall across the border and lose her memory again. Gold attempts to help Belle remember herself, but she is confused and admitted to the hospital following the attack. Belle later "remembers" her cursed self as a scantily-clad barfly named Lacey, with help from Regina. Unlike Belle (who brought out the best in Mr. Gold), Lacey encourages the darker urges in him. Gold later finds a potion that regains her identity as Belle. As Gold, along with Emma Swan, Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White), David Nolan (Prince Charming), Regina, and Captain Hook travel to retrieve Henry from Neverland, Gold gives Belle a protection spell to cast around Storybrooke to make it invisible again. He tells her that he may not be returning to her but loves her.[15] However, he encounters Belle frequently in the jungle of Neverland as an illusion to act as a crutch to his cowardliness. However, Regina later reveals to him that she is Peter Pan's shadow in disguise.

Captain Killian "Hook" Jones Colin O'Donoghue 2,3 21[38] Alive
Colin O'Donoghue
Captain Hook originally known as Killian Jones, is a pirate captain who formerly worked for a King as second-in-command for his brother Liam Jones. The two were sent to Neverland by the King to retrieve an unknown plant called Dreamshade. Killian is reluctant to follow orders after Peter Pan informs them it is poisonous. After Liam is poisoned by the plant, Pan tells Killian that the waters of Neverland will heal him, but he will owe him something in return (though he does not reveal his intentions). Though Liam is cured, he dies upon attempting to exit Neverland as a side effect of the spring's waters. Killian then becomes captain, renaming the ship The Jolly Roger, becoming a leader who lives by his own rules and vowing to never return to Neverland. Some time after, he seduces away Rumplestiltskin's wife, Milah. In a later fight with Rumplestiltskin, he cuts off Jones' hand, which he then replaces with a hook, thus receiving his new alias. He then informs his fellow pirates that they will be travelling to Neverland again.

Whilst in Neverland, Hook finds Rumplestiltskin's son Baelfire after he is taken to the area following his separation from his father. Hook takes him aboard The Jolly Roger and forms an unlikely friendship with him, until Bae learns that Hook had taken Milah from Rumplestiltskin. He hands Bae over to The Lost Boys who take him to Peter Pan.[15] Returning from Neverland, Hook is enlisted by The Evil Queen Regina to dispose of her mother Cora in Wonderland. However, Hook and Cora realize they have a common goal and decide to form an alliance. When the Dark Curse is activated, Cora protects him and part of the Enchanted Forest with a barrier spell, frozen in time for 28 years.[12] After the time period, he reluctantly helps Emma Swan and Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White), who were transported from Storybrooke, to try and get home. He and Emma travel up a beanstalk and retrieve a magical compass, though she abandons him as she doesn't truly trust him.[3] Hook later follows Emma and Mary Margaret to Storybrooke with Cora, through a magic bean obtained by Hook.[12]

Later, when Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin) finds a way to cross the barrier out of Storybrooke without losing his memories, Hook shoots Belle, causing her to fall across the border and lose her memory again. After Gold travels to Manhattan to locate his son, Hook sails to the location, and attacks him with his poisoned hook. After being knocked out by Emma, Neal Cassidy recognizes Hook due to his past encounter with him as Baelfire (Rumplestiltskin's son). Hook is then captured by Neal's fiancée Tamara, to be used in her and Greg Mendell's plot to destroy magic in Storybrooke. Hook later helps David obtain a magic bean stolen from Greg and Tamara that they plan to use to transport a fail-safe trigger into. Although he originally betrays the trust of the Storybrooke residents by sailing away from the town with the bean for himself, he returns to help Emma, Mary Margaret, David, Regina, and even Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin) travel to Neverland, after Greg and Tamara abduct Henry Mills and take him there through a portal.[15] Once in Neverland, Hook becomes the group's main guide for directions around the jungle. He also cures David from his Dreamshade poisoning.

Baelfire, often abbreviated to "Bae", is the son of Rumplestiltskin. As a child, Baelfire lives alone with his father after his mother Milah leaves. On his fourteenth birthday, Bae would be taken to fight in the Ogre Wars. However, his father becomes The Dark One and kills the soldiers who attempt to take Bae. Although Rumplestiltskin claims that Bae is safe, his son is scared and obtains a magic bean that will take him and his father to a world without magic. However, Rumplestiltskin is too afraid to lose his powers and Bae is forced to enter the portal alone. He arrives in London, during the Victorian era and spends six months as a street urchin. He is discovered by Wendy Darling, who offers him sanctuary. When her parents find him, they choose to adopt him. After Bae learns that the Darling children are being stalked by a mysterious shadow, Wendy visits Neverland, later telling Bae that The Shadow is returning to kidnap one of her brothers. Bae protects the family, sacrificing himself and being taken to Neverland. While en route, Bae manages to break free of The Shadow and is rescued by Captain Hook. Bae learns that his mother, Milah, fell in love with Hook, which resulted in her leaving him and her death at the hands of his own father. Angry at Hook and his father, Bae wishes to be returned to The Darling Family, but is captured by the Lost Boys. After a number of unspecified adventures, Bae returns to the real world during the 20th century, taking on the identity of Neal Cassidy.

Neal Cassidy meets Emma Swan in Portland, Oregon in 2001 (11 years prior to the curse being broken.) They become a couple, but Neal later learns that he is wanted for stealing and decides to flee to Canada with Emma. He is accosted by August Booth (Pinocchio) who forces Neal to leave Emma in order for her to fulfill her destiny, who is later arrested for possession of the stolen watches. Two months later, Neal and Booth meet in Vancouver, where Booth reveals Emma's imprisonment. Neal asks him to give Emma their car and the proceeds of the sale of the watches. Neal is later shown in an apartment finding a postcard inscribed with the word 'Broken', sent by Booth after the curse is broken.[10] After receiving a magical globe, Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin) tracks his son to Manhattan. Neal's true identity is eventually revealed to Emma when she locates him.[36] Upon arriving in Storybrooke, Neal invites his fiancée Tamara to the town. Although she reacts negatively to his claims about magic, it is later revealed she is fully aware of Storybrooke's nature and is Greg Mendell's lover and secret contact. After realizing Tamara's true identity, she shoots Neal and throws a magic bean under his feet that creates a portal. Neal, not wanting Henry to lose both of his parents, decides to let go of Emma's hand after telling her that he loves her.[14] It is presumed that Neal died from his wound but it is later revealed that he was transported to the untouched part of the Enchanted Forest where Mulan, Princess Aurora, and Prince Phillip pronounce him alive and washed upon the beach.[15] The trio tend to him and Neal tells them that he needs to learn Emma and Henry's fate. The group find Rumplestiltskin's castle and Neal uses a magical globe that reveals Emma is in Neverland. He then has Robin Hood's son call The Shadow, using himself as bait to successfully travel to Neverland. He later rescues Henry, only to be captured by Peter Pan and his Lost Boys. After being sent to the Echo Caves, the group manage to rescue him upon revealing their darkest secrets.

Archie then stands up to Regina and threatens to declare her an unfit mother if she continues to interfere with his sessions.[35] Emma later breaks the curse and he regains his memories as Jiminy Cricket.[22] Regina's mother Cora later assumes the form of her daughter and abducts Archie while disguising an unspecified person she killed as Archie's body. Red Riding Hood is a young woman who temporarily transforms into a wolf.

Red meets Snow White during the latter's fleeing from King George. The two work together to attempt to kill a wolf that is terrorizing the area, gradually leading them to believe that the wolf is actually Peter, Red's lover. Red convinces Peter to chain himself up in the woods for the night while she keeps him company. Her grandmother has always told Red to wear her red cloak for reasons unknown. However, these reasons are revealed when she transforms into the wolf and kills Peter.[25] During her later travels with Snow, she discovers an underground society of werewolves, including her supposed mother, Anita. Red learns to control her wolf transformation as to not become a mindless killer, eventually deciding to stay with the pack. However, when Snow finds Red, The Evil Queen's soldiers attack the society. After the soldier's defeat, Anita plans to kill Snow in revenge but in turn is accidentally impaled on an arrow by Red in wolf form. Later when King George's guards arrive to kill Charming, Red transforms into a wolf to fight them off and allow his escape.[22] She and Granny are later seen helping Snow attempt to rescue Charming, after he is taken prisoner by The Evil Queen.[2][18]

In Storybrooke, she is Ruby, a rebellious young woman who wants to leave town but is held back by her grandmother's ill health.[2][25] She works at Granny's Café as a waitress.[21][31] Her relationship with her grandmother is strained, as she disapproves of her behaviour and provocative attire.[2][25] Ruby later tires of extra responsibility, quitting her job, and becoming Sheriff Emma Swan's assistant. Due to her tracking skills inherited from the wolf's curse, she manages to discover a buried box containing a human heart. This horrifies her and she decides to resume working at Granny's. As the result of her new-found maturity, she begins to wear less revealing clothes and minimizes her make-up. She apologizes to her grandmother, who tells Ruby that she was working her so hard because she wanted her to take over the café when she retired. When Emma breaks the curse, Ruby's memories are returned and she reunites with her family and friends.[10] Later, she seems to have difficulty reconciling her two lives, and generally goes by her "cursed" name, managing to display more of her wolfish abilities. On the first full moon since the curse was broken, Ruby transforms into a wolf. Later, an apparent wolf murder of Billy (Gus) is discovered, though an investigation reveals that Albert Spencer (King George) murdered Billy in an attempt to frame her. After comfort by David, she remembers self-control as a wolf.

Pinocchio is a puppet that Geppetto carved from an enchanted tree. As a boy puppet, he gives his life to save Geppetto from drowning in a storm. As a reward, The Blue Fairy turns him into a real boy, promising that the spell will hold so long as he is selfless, brave and truthful. Later, The Blue Fairy asks Geppetto to carve another enchanted tree into a magical wardrobe to save the pregnant Snow White and Prince Charming from the The Evil Queen's curse. However, the curse will send the inhabitants to a land without magic and Pinocchio, who is a real boy because of magic, could turn back into a puppet. Snow gives birth to Emma and Geppetto sends his son through the wardrobe, telling him to protect the child and get her to break the curse. After emerging in the real world, Pinocchio finds the newborn Emma, and they are taken to an orphanage. He leaves Emma to run away with other members of the home.[44]

His alias counterpart in the real world is August Wayne Booth. He first appears in Portland, Oregon in 2001 where he confronts Neal Cassidy, a thief who fell in love with Emma Swan, and convinces him to leave her to allow Emma to fulfil her destiny. After Emma is arrested for possession of stolen items, he visits Vancouver to inform Neal of Emma's fate. August in turn later informs Neal when the curse is broken.[10] August enters Storybrooke upon Emma's arrival to the town,[17] telling Henry that he believes in the curse too and wants to convince Emma that it is real.[22] He later tells Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin) that he is deathly ill and needs magic to heal himself turning to wood.[26] He persists to attempt to make Emma believe showing his now-wooden leg, but Emma's denial refuses to see it.[44] When Emma realises the curse's reality, she visits August for help, though he completely turns to wood before her eyes.[9]

Weeks after the curse is broken, Mary Margaret finds August hiding in the woods ashamed of the mistakes that he has made. She tries to convince him to return to Storybrooke, but August declines. He is later found by Tamara and offered a potion that will keep him human forever if he leaves Storybrooke. Upon realizing that Tamara intends to bring harm to the Storybrooke citizens, August attempts to warn Emma, but is mortally wounded by Tamara before he dies in Marco's arms. However, it is determined that August's actions on that day were selfless, brave, and true and Mother Superior (The Blue Fairy) is able to restore him into his original form of a seven-year old Pinocchio.[45]

The Huntsman Sheriff Graham Humbert Jamie Dornan 1 9[46] Deceased
Jamie Dornan
The Huntsman is a nameless hunter who is a solitary recluse, raised by wolves. He considers the wolves to be his true family, and is greatly saddened by the deaths of animals. He is considered by The Evil Queen Regina the perfect assassin, and is hired to kill Snow White, though he spares her for selflessness. When he offers the Queen a stag's heart instead, she realizes she has been tricked and tears out The Huntsman's heart, keeping it in her vault and using it to make him her slave.[7] When Prince Charming is led to his execution, The Huntsman helps him escape. The Prince asks him to come with him, but he replies he cannot leave and not to let his sacrifice (the loss of his heart) be in vain.[9]

In Storybrooke, he is Sheriff Graham Humbert, the town's handsome and level-headed police officer.[2] In the earlier parts of Storybrooke, Sheriff Graham helps Mayor Regina Mills (The Evil Queen) from preventing Owen and Kurt Flynn from leaving town. When Emma Swan arrives, he is one of the few residents who go directly against Regina, making her his deputy.[4][35] He and Emma are attracted to each other, though he has a secret sexual relationship with Regina.[4][35] Emma feels betrayed and is disgusted of the relationship.[28] As he experiences flashbacks of his previous life, he seeks advice from Henry Mills, who tells him about him of his story. Graham is unable to find his heart in Regina's father's mausoleum, but ends his relationship with Regina. Shortly after, he starts a new relationship with Emma, regaining his lost memories in the process. However, Regina crushes his heart and he dies in Emma's arms, shortly after thanking Emma for helping him remember who he truly was.[7]

Jamie Dornan stated that he knew about Graham's death since the pilot's filming.[47] Producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz commented that Graham's death was always planned and was meant to prove the seriousness of the curse. The duo have also noted that because of the popularity of the character, they are trying to "move heaven and earth" to bring the character back.[5]

When her granddaughter begins a relationship with a young man called Peter, she disapproves. As news of a wolf killing villagers becomes known, Granny warns the others that the wolf is a monster. She tells them that when she was a girl, a wolf killed her father and brothers and then made her a wolf. The other aspects of the curse faded with age, but she kept her heightened senses. Red and Snow White come to believe Peter is the wolf, and go against Granny's wishes. Granny discovers the deception and reveals that Red inherited the family curse and is in fact the wolf. Granny received an enchanted red cloak from a wizard, to prevent Red's transformation. By the time she and Snow find Red, she had already killed Peter.[25] The pair are later seen helping Snow rescue Prince Charming, determined to fight the The Evil Queen Regina and her curse.[2][18]

In Storybrooke, she is known simply as Granny and is the owner of Granny's Bed and Breakfast and Cafe. Her health problems prevent Ruby (Red Riding Hood) from leaving town, who assists her grandmother as a waitress. Their relationship is hostile as Granny disapproves of Ruby's behaviour and sexually provocative attire.[2][25] Ruby becomes tired of her grandmother telling her what to do and quits her job, though she eventually returns and apologizes to her. The Blue Fairy Mother Superior Keegan Connor Tracy 1,2,3 16[56] Alive
The Blue Fairy, or Reul Ghorm[26] is a high-ranking fairy godmother who uses her magic to help others, although she is revealed to be something of a hardliner in her leadership of the fairies and her plans tend to be more machiavellian than one might expect from a fairy. The Blue Fairy was a teacher to Tinker Bell (the Green Fairy), until she stopped believing in her due to her rule-breaking. While she is quite powerful, she is unable to undo Rumplestiltskin's magic. To help fix a problem created by his magic, she transforms Jiminy into a cricket and guides him to help Geppetto.[35] She also transforms the puppet Pinocchio into a real boy. She is able to create a quill that temporarily freezes Rumplestiltskin when he uses it, aiding in his imprisonment.[32] Rumplestiltskin is antagonistic towards her and other fairies, blaming her for the disappearance of his son Baelfire.[26] The Blue Fairy presents the idea of fashioning a wardrobe from a magical tree that could ward off any curse, which saves Emma and Pinocchio from the The Evil Queen Regina's curse by sending them to the new world.[2]

In Storybrooke, she is the Mother Superior of the town's nuns who were all fairies prior to the curse. When the curse is broken, Henry later begs her to use magic to restore order in Storybrooke, but she tells him she cannot without her wand or fairy dust.[10] She sets about organizing disaster relief after the town is damaged by a wraith. Unlike many residents of the town, she generally seems to have no difficulty with her reclaimed memories, and is often seen helping aid the primary characters in their attempts to stop Regina from using her powers. When August Booth (Pinocchio) is tasered by Tamara and dies in Marco's arms, she restores him to a seven year old real boy.[45]

Dr. Victor Frankenstein Dr. Whale David Anders 1,2,3 10[57] Alive
David Anders
Dr. Victor Frankenstein is a man of science from an unknown world (unlike the other fairy tale characters) who believes magic to be inferior to science. He is the older brother of Gerhardt Frankenstein and the son of Alphonse Frankenstein. His character is based on James Whale, the director of the films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935).

Victor originally sought a way to restore life to the dead, but has his funding pulled by his father. Rumplestiltskin offers him gold in exchange for the scientific method on how to revive the dead as magic could not. In order to further his experiments, Victor robs a grave for body parts, but is caught by Gerhardt who is shot by a police officer. When Victor works to bring Gerhardt back to life, electricity cannot revive him, so Rumplestiltskin instead offers a heart from the Enchanted Forest. As part of a bargain, he creates a false attempt to reanimate Daniel (The Evil Queen Regina's lost love) to make it easier for Rumplestiltskin to teach her the dark arts. He keeps the heart Regina gave him to use on Daniel, though the experiment "fails". Back in his own world, Frankenstein successfully reanimates his brother, but inadvertently turns him into a monster, beating his father to death. Victor cannot bring himself to kill his brother once more, so decides to keep him locked in the tower of his castle until he can devise a way to help Gerhardt overcome his psychotic rage.[13]

In Storybrooke, his counterpart is Dr. Whale, a doctor working in the Storybrooke General Hospital. He is strongly connected to Regina Mills (The Evil Queen), doing whatever she says without hesitation.[6] After the curse is broken, he leads a mob to Regina's home intending to kill her, but is stopped by Emma Swan and Charming, who are unaware of his true identity coming from a separate world.[10][58] Victor later seeks a way to return to his brother, believing if he were to do something for Regina she would bring him back. He robs Daniel's preserved corpse and reanimates him with a magical heart. The reanimation is successful, but turns Daniel into a monster who savagely rips off Whale's arm and escapes. Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin) reattaches his arm, taunting him for putting more faith in science than magic. When news of an outsider named Greg Mendell crashing his car into the town reaches Whale, he is reluctant to handle the surgery of him to evade the exposure of Storybrooke. Whale later leaves the hospital, found by Ruby, who prevents him from jumping into the town's waters. Whale reveals his true identity to Ruby, who persuades him to return to the surgery.[13]

Geppetto is an elderly carpenter and Pinocchio's caretaker. Geppetto was orphaned when Jiminy Cricket accidentally transformed his parents into puppets.

Geppetto carved himself a son named Pinocchio out of magical wood. During Pinocchio's adventures, he and Gepetto end up being chased by a whale during a thunderstorm, ultimating in Pinocchio sacrificing his life for Gepetto's. For this act, The Blue Fairy turns him into a real boy, finally bestowing Gepetto with a son. She asks Geppetto to carve another enchanted tree into a magical wardrobe with the ability to save two people, the pregnant Snow White and Prince Charming from The Evil Queen Regina's curse. However, the curse would send everyone to a land without magic and Pinocchio, a real boy because of magic, could turn back into a puppet. Geppetto bargains with the fairy to use the second spot for Pinocchio, ultimating in her lying to the other inhabitants, claiming the wardrobe can only save one. When Snow's child is born, instead of giving up Pinocchio's spot to her, Geppetto sends his son, telling him to protect the child and get them to break the curse.

In Storybrooke, he is Marco, the town's handyman. Marco states that he and his wife are unable to have children. August Booth (the adult Pinocchio) offers to work as Marco's assistant to which Marco agrees. Marco's memories as Geppetto are restored when the curse is broken. August (who had turned back into wood) returns to life, albeit still made of wood. In the woods, Mary Margaret (Snow White) encounters him, telling Marco of his existence. Marco admits that he had lied about the wardrobe only holding one and Mary Margaret attacks him, an act in which he claims to have deserved. Mother Superior (The Blue Fairy) resurrects him for his honesty and Marco takes in a now seven-year-old Pinocchio as his son once more.[45]

Benjamin Stockham (Flynn)
2 3 11[60] Deceased
Greg Mendell is a man who crashes his car upon entering Storybrooke. As a child, he and his father Kurt were camping out in the woods of Maine in 1983, the night the Dark Curse took everyone not protected by Cora's shield to the new world. He enjoys Regina's company, however, this only leads her trying to keep him and his father in Storybrooke. He escapes, vowing to find his arrested father no matter what. This implies that Greg did not crash into the town by accident, he was looking for it. He is determined to expose Storybrooke as he could not convince anyone of its existence after he escaped. He also vows to find out what happened to his father.[62] Regina eventually learns of Greg's identity, telling him to leave the town. Greg ignores her, as it is revealed that the "Her" he was contacting is Neal Cassidy's fiancée, Tamara.[45] The two later kidnap Regina and torture her to reveal his father's whereabouts. Prince Henry Tony Perez (older)
Zak Santiago (young)
1,2 6[78] Deceased
Prince Henry is the son of King Xavier. He marries Cora after she demonstrates the ability to spin straw into gold. He is later the loving but weak father of The Evil Queen Regina and serves as her royal valet in the Enchanted Forest. Henry is supportive of Regina, but does not protect her against the manipulations or actions of her mother. When Regina is locked in her room at the palace by King Leopold, Henry brings poisonous vipers to The Genie to free her. Some time after, he is abducted by Cora and held captive in Wonderland as leverage against Regina. Regina later rescues him with Jefferson's help. He advises her to visit Maleficent to retrieve her curse. When she is unable to enact the curse properly, she visits Rumplestiltskin and is told that she must tear out the heart of the thing she loves most, understanding this to mean her father. He tries to convince her that they can still be happy together and start a new life, but she kills him. He is buried in a grave near the site where she enacts the curse.

In Storybrooke, Regina appears to have cared a great deal for her father, naming her adopted son Henry Mills after him, and making his tomb a large mausoleum. It was said the Dark Curse would leave a hole in the caster's heart that cannot be filled; Regina may have done these things in attempt to fill the void she created by killing him.

Jefferson/The Mad Hatter Sebastian Stan 1,2 6[79] Alive
Sebastian Stan
Jefferson is a man who owns a magical hat that can be used to travel between different worlds. He worked for both Rumplestiltskin and The Evil Queen Regina, obtaining objects from other worlds for them. His name derives from the song "White Rabbit" performed by Jefferson Airplane.

When he first meets Regina, Rumplestiltskin has Jefferson bring Dr. Frankenstein to the fairytale world to pretend failing to revive her true love Daniel, in order to make her become evil. In his later life, he lives with his daughter Grace in the forest, collecting and selling mushrooms to survive. When the Evil Queen asks for another favour, he initially refuses, but eventually agrees with the condition that his daughter "will want for nothing". He takes the Evil Queen to Wonderland, where she rescues her father Henry. However, she abandons Jefferson and he is captured by the knights of the Queen of Hearts, who behead him, though he survives. His head is then reattached and he is ordered to make another magical hat to return home. Although he makes thousands of hats, none are able to take him home, leading him into insanity and earning his alter ego as The Mad Hatter.[8]

In Storybrooke, he remembers his life in the Enchanted Forest, which is part of his curse. He lives in a large house, from which he uses telescopes to spy on Sheriff Emma Swan's office and his daughter Grace, now named Paige. He captures Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White) after she escapes from her cell, later abducting Emma when she goes looking for her. He orders her to make a magical hat that will take him home, but Emma knocks him out. However, he awakens and attempts to kill Emma, before Mary Margaret pushes him out of a window. He disappears, leaving nothing but his hat.[8] Jefferson returns when Regina needs him for a plan to get rid of Emma, promising he be allowed to forget the curse and have a new life with his daughter. He retrieves the apple that cursed Snow White into a deathlike sleep from the Enchanted Forest.[18] However, after Henry Mills is cursed instead, Regina refuses to uphold her end of the bargain. Furious, Jefferson frees Belle from her cell and instructs her to tell her true love Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin) that Regina held her captive.[9] After the curse is broken, David Nolan (Prince Charming) asks for information about his hat in order to find a way to get back to Emma and Mary Margaret who were taken through a portal using his hat.[11] He initially avoids Grace, feeling guilty for leaving her behind in their previous lives, but eventually seeks her out and they happily reunite.

Daniel Noah Bean 1,2 2[80] Deceased
Daniel was a stable boy at Regina's home when she was a teenager; he gave her riding lessons and was also her love interest. After Regina saves a young Snow White's life, King Leopold proposes to her. To avoid the unwanted marriage, Regina devises a plan to run away with Daniel, but Cora kills him upon learning of their relationship from Snow White.[30] After Regina learns basic magic, she uses a preservation spell on Daniel's body, keeping him in a glass case and dedicating her time to finding a way to bring him back to life. Jefferson brings Dr. Victor Frankenstein to her from his world and he performs an experiment on Daniel's body, failing. It is later revealed that he failed on purpose as part of a deal with Rumplestiltskin, who wanted Regina to give into her dark side.

After the curse in Storybrooke is broken, Dr. Whale (Victor Frankenstein) wishes for Regina to return him to his world. He attempts the experiment on Daniel again, this time succeeding. However, the pain of resurrection turns Daniel into a "monster" who rips off Whale's arm. During a brief moment of painful lucidity, Daniel tells Regina to forget their love and "love again", before lapsing back into psychotic behaviour and attempting to attack her; a heartbroken Regina turns Daniel to dust.[81]

Cora/Queen of Hearts Barbara Hershey (older)
Rose McGowan (younger)
2 1 12[82] Deceased
Barbara Hershey
Cora is Regina's mother, with arguably more powerful magic and more evil than her. Cora is the daughter of a local poor, drunken miller, similar to the Miller's Daughter in the Rumpelstiltskin story. She delivers flour to the castle of King Xavier, but is degraded by the petty and cruel noble court. Cora claims she can spin straw into gold and save the kingdom. Xavier states that if she can, she will have his son Prince Henry's hand in marriage, but if not, she will be killed. She is then approached by Rumplestiltskin who states that he will teach her to spin the straw into gold if she agrees to give him her first born child. She agrees, managing the task and accepting Henry's hand in marriage. Cora is again approached by Rumplestiltskin who changes his deal to claim whatever child Cora suggests to him. She plans to run away with him but chooses power over love, ripping her own heart out to avoid giving into her feelings for him. She marries Henry, and gives birth to Regina.[83]

An older Cora shows to be a controlling mother towards Regina. She feels that Regina does not act like a proper lady and wants her to achieve a high status in life. Cora's designs on taking over the kingdom began with a plot to kill Queen Eva (Snow White's mother) by fatally poisoning her to make Regina Queen. In addition, she causes Snow's horse to become wild, knowing that Regina would save her. Cora uses this opportunity to arrange a marriage between Regina and Snow's father King Leopold. However, Regina is in love with the stable boy Daniel, a secret that Snow innocently informs Cora of. Cora then kills him believing such a marriage would ruin her plans of royalty.[30] Rumplestiltskin later gives Regina a gateway to Wonderland, which she forces Cora through after becoming unbearable to her.[11] Trapped in Wonderland, she becomes the Queen of Hearts. When Captain Hook is sent to kill her by Regina (who does not want her mother following her to the new land created by the curse), Cora instead collaborates with him, shielding part of the Enchanted Forest from the curse and freezing them in time for 28 years.[12]

After the curse is broken and Mary Margaret (Snow White) and her daughter Emma Swan are transported to the shielded Enchanted Forest, they encounter Cora who pretends to be a prisoner in the safe haven.[11] When Cora finds out that Regina and her adoptive son Henry are in Storybrooke, she is revealed to have killed Sir Lancelot and disguises as his body. She retrieves a portion of the magical wardrobe's remains and meets with Hook to plan to travel to Storybrooke, where she can reunite with her daughter. Cora and Hook find Emma and Mary Margaret and use the waters of Lake Nostos and the wardrobe remains to create a portal, only to be defeated by the pair who return to Storybrooke. However, Cora and Hook eventually follow them, using a magic bean.[12] Once in Storybrooke, Cora impersonates Regina to supposedly kill Dr. Archie Hopper (Jiminy Cricket), thus causing Regina to lose everything. She then turns a rehabilitating Regina back to evil by playing on her love for Henry. She seeks out The Dark One's dagger to protect her family.[83] Before Cora can attack Mr. Gold with his dagger, Regina returns her heart which, unbeknownst to her, has been poisoned by Mary Margaret with the same candle that Cora originally poisoned Snow's mother with. Upon possessing her heart, she loves Regina truly, until she dies in her arms. Regina realizes that Mary Margaret is responsible for her death and vows to avenge her mother.[83] Cora is ultimately left unavenged, and mostly forgotten due to the threat of Peter Pan.

He forces Snow to break David's heart and allow him to marry Midas's daughter.[21] David still breaks off his engagement, fleeing his home with George and his knights tracking him down.[23] They eventually capture him, and George sentences David to be beheaded, though The Evil Queen Regina rescues him and takes him as her captive.[18] When he learns of David and Snow White's plan to take the kingdom, he kidnaps Snow with the help of Sir Lancelot and uses a potion to prevent her from having children. In Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Cyrus is a genie that befriends Alice when she stumbled upon his bottle.

Giants

Giants are large humans who live at the top of beanstalks, away from humans. They grow magic beans which were originally used to trade with humans, until they are stolen from them. They have the ability to smell the blood of humans.

According to Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, Giants are vegetarians.

Giant Squid

The Giant Squid resides in the waters near Neverland. Using a conch shell, Neal had to lure, spear, and reel in a Giant Squid so that Mr. Gold can harvest their ink (which can temporary disable any magical creature) in a plot to disable Peter Pan.

Mermaids

Mermaids are creatures that are half-human half-fish that travel to different oceans on either world. Ariel is a mermaid. The mermaids of Neverland are unpleasant and dangerous. Regina turns one mermaid to wood in an attempt to stop a storm summoned by her.

Mock Turtle

In this show, the Mock Turtle is a giant aquatic turtle that is as large as a small island. In "Trust Me," Alice and the Knave of Hearts end up on it after being dropped by Silvermist. Upon this discovery, Alice takes advantage of this and commands the Giant Turtle to take it to the other side of the lake.

Ogres

Ogres are large humanoid creatures that were the enemies of the humans. There was an event called the Ogre Wars where various kingdoms fought against an army of Ogres. One Ogre was a follower of The Evil Queen and was present at her first attempt to enact the Dark Curse.

After Emma Swan and Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White) are transported back to the Enchanted Forest in the aftermath of the Dark Curse breaking, Emma is attacked by an Ogre. She is saved by Mary Margaret who slays the creature by shooting it in the eye with an arrow.[86]

Pongo

Pongo is the pet dalmatian of Dr. Archie Hopper (Jiminy Cricket).

The Seer

The Seer (played by Brighid Fleming as a child, Shannon Lucio as an adult) is first seen as a child and prisoner kept in a cage by the forces of the Duke. Rumplestiltskin is training with the army during the Ogre Wars and is horrified to see a child whose eyes are cut out and embedded into her palms. She informs him that she can see the future, foreseeing his wife Milah giving birth to his child and due to his actions on the battlefield, his son will become fatherless. The Seer then tells him that they are fated to meet again, then vanishes.[3] Years after the predictions come true and he is parted from his son, Rumplestiltskin returns as The Dark One and the now adult Seer gives him the ideas for the evil curse. Before she dies, she transfers her powers to him, telling him the person who will lead him to his son is a young boy; but he will be the undoing of The Dark One. However, he is unaware that the boy would later turn out to be his grandson Henry Mills.[36]

The Shadow

The Shadow (voiced by Marilyn Manson)[98] is a mysterious dark being with gleaming eyes, taking on the shape of an adolescent boy. At night, The Shadow enters the open windows of sleeping children and kidnaps unsuspecting boys, flying them away to Neverland in hopes of them being Henry Mills (who is the target in question). Wendy Darling is taken by The Shadow. But as she was a girl, Wendy was allowed to be brought back to her home. Baelfire, who had been living with The Darlings, promises to protect Wendy and her brothers where he sacrifices himself to save them. The Shadow takes Bae to Neverland but drops him in the waters encircling Neverland when frightened by a lit match.[14]

When Greg and Tamara arrive in Neverland with Henry, the Lost Boys confront the pair, ordering them to hand him over. When the two of them refuse, The Shadow rips Greg's shadow from his body, leaving a lifeless body. In the remaining part of the Enchanted Forest, Neal uses Robin Hood's son to call The Shadow, then uses himself as bait to travel to Neverland and save Emma and Henry.

The Siren

The Siren (played by Aria Pullman) is the guardian of Lake Nostos who keeps its waters untouched by outsiders. She uses the waters to transform herself into a victim's desire of anyone who wants to claim its waters, then drowns them. Prince Charming encounters The Siren when he attempts to obtain the waters to save the life of Princess Abigail's true love Frederick. She disguises as Charming's true love Snow White, dragging Charming under the water. However, he sees through the disguise and kills The Siren with his sword as she reverts to her true form upon death.[23] Following the death of The Siren, Lake Nostos dries up.[86]

Trolls

Trolls are humanoid creatures that enjoy dealing with jewels and would often barter with humans for gold. According to Snow White, trolls do not like horses. Snow comes across a group of trolls on the Troll Bridge, attempting to make a deal with them to buy back Prince Charming's mother's ring which she had traded after stealing. The trolls suspect that it is a trap with Charming present and he ends up captured. Using fairy dust, Snow turns the trolls into cockroaches where they are stepped upon by Charming.[6]

Unicorns

Unicorns are horses with one horn on their head. In the Enchanted Forest, Rumplestiltskin agrees to teach Queen Regina magic in exchange that she rips out a unicorn's heart and crushes it, which she cannot manage. Later, a black unicorn is a pet companion of Maleficent where it is nearly killed by The Evil Queen (Regina).

Werewolves

Werewolves are people born via genetic inheritance with the ability to shapeshift into a wolf during the full moon (also known as "wolfs-time"). A person born without the gene can become susceptible to also having the ability to shape shift by being marked by a werewolf. Ruby (Red Riding Hood), Quinn and Anita are all werewolves while Widow Lucas (Granny) also has werewolf abilities remaining from an attack.

Wolf

A Wolf was a companion of The Huntsman and hunts deers for both of them to feed upon. In Storybrooke, Sheriff Graham's recollection of him being The Huntsman results in a wolf appearing before him. It takes him and Emma Swan to the vault where his heart is said to be, but they are unable to find it.[7]

Wraiths

Wraiths are hooded creatures that are summoned by an amulet marking its victims. The creature will then hunt the victim down and suck its soul out, transporting it to another world, leaving a lifeless body.
