The Kapoor family is a prominent Indian family from Peshawar, Pakistan with a long history in Hindi cinema. Many members of the family have been successful actors, film directors, and producers.

Background

Kapoor Haveli in Peshwar (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Pakistan.

Prithviraj Kapoor was the first of the family to pursue acting. He was born in Samundri in 1906.[3] His father served as a police officer in the city of Peshawar (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Pakistan,[4] while his grandfather was a Tehsildar in Samundri.[5] Prithviraj's first lead role was in Cinema Girl in 1929.

Though all three of Prithviraj Kapoor's sons, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, and Shashi Kapoor, became actors, it is Raj Kapoor's descendants who have carried on the family legacy. His sons, Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor, went on to become well-known actors; his youngest son, Rajiv Kapoor, was not as successful as his brothers. Randhir Kapoor and Babita's daughters, Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, have found success in the film industry. Rishi Kapoor's son, Ranbir Kapoor, made his debut in 2007 in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya.

Nikhil Nanda, maternal grandson of Raj Kapoor is married to Shweta Bachchan, daughter of well known actor, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan.[6][7]
