Reception

Criticism

Clay Aiken's criticism

Season two runner-up Clay Aiken criticized this season's judges on Twitter for being too boring.[59] He cited Simon Cowell's presence on the show as one of the reasons the show worked.[60] Jennifer Lopez later commented on the criticisms, saying "Well, everybody's entitled to their own opinion."[61]

Top 24 format change

The decision to allow the producers and the judges to choose which semifinalists proceeded to the top 14, thus eliminating viewers' long held custom of voting for whom they wanted to advance or be eliminated, was met with criticisms by bloggers and viewers alike.

For example, tvline.com writer Michael Slezak argued that what made Idol successful is the "belief that average citizens – not soulless record execs or manipulative TV producers – get one chance per year to pluck a talented kid from relative obscurity and give him or her a major-label record deal." He said: "How does it benefit the show to essentially fire its loyal fans from a job they love and cherish, and outsource it to a trio of industry vets who often gravitate toward wide-eyed youth over emotional maturity, and telegenic personality over vocal prowess? In other words, your Farewell Season voting window is going to last for six weeks."[62]
