Jackson Wang (born 28 March 1994) is a Hong Kong born Chinese rapper, singer and dancer. He is best known as a member of the South Korean boy band Got7. Jackson is a former national fencer (sabre) of the Hong Kong fencing team and was ranked 11th in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, eventually winning first place at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship[1] in 2011.

Early life

Jackson was born in Hong Kong on 28 March 1994 to an athletic family. Both his parents were athletes from mainland China. [2] His mother is Sophia Wang. His father is Wang Ruiji, a former coach of Hong Kong national fencing team and a one time winner at the Asian Games in 1978 representing China. When Jackson was 9, he and his older brother received gymnastics training and won the 1st place in the Acrobatic Gymnastics Championship for men's pair category.

Jackson started his fencing career when he was 10. Since then he has been trained by his own father as well as other professional coaches and achieved multiple awards and winnings for Hong Kong national fencing team.[3] [4] Jackson was ranked 11th place on the 2010 Cadet World Championships. He represented Hong Kong in the Youth Olympic Games 2010 held in Singapore and participated in 2 events, Boys Sabre and Mixed Team. He was eliminated in the rounds of 16 and did not manage to go up to the quarterfinals losing to Artur Okunev from Russia.

Jackson attended the American International School in Hong Kong and completed up to 11th grade.[5] He can speak Mandarin, Shanghainese, Cantonese, English and Korean.

Although Jackson holds Hong Kong nationality and has been introduced as from Hong Kong, he often self identifies as a Chinese from Mainland China. [6]

Career

Jackson won first place at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship.[1]

Jackson came to South Korea in 2011 on July 3rd. He became a JYP trainee for two and a half years before his debut in Got7. His first pre-debut appearance was on an episode of Mnet's reality-survival program WIN: Who Is Next, which aired on September 6th, 2013. Jackson alongside Mark, BamBam & Yugyeom were competing against the YG Entertainment trainees: Team A and Team B (that are now known as WINNER (Team A) and iKON (Team B)). Jackson's first appearance as an official member of Got7 was in the teaser for their debut on January 6th with Yugyeom. Got7's video came out on January 16th.

His first significant solo variety was MBC Every 1's Hitmaker in July 2014 in which he formed a project group called Bigbyung with VIXX's N, Hyuk, BtoB's Sungjae produced by Jeong Hyeong-don and Defconn.

Jackson became more popular in SBS's Roommate where he was awarded the 2014 SBS Best Newcomer Award on 30 December 2014.[7] His work includes Star King, Others' Taste, Law of the Jungle, Happy Together, Radio Star, A Look At Myself etc. In May 12th 2015, Jackson was appointed as new MC for SBS's Inkigayo following the leave of ZE:A’s Kwanghee.
