Bigg Boss 4 in 2010 was the fourth season of Indian reality TV show Bigg Boss, which aired on Colors from 3 October 2010. This season was longer than its predecessor, Bigg Boss 3 and lasted for 14 weeks (96 days) ending on 8 January 2011. The show was hosted by Salman Khan.[1]

During the launch on 3 October, fourteen hand-picked housemates[2][3] entered the house located in Lonavla, a hill station, about 100 kilometres east of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Two additional wild card entries were made during the second and third weeks, taking the number of contestants to sixteen. The housemates, considered strangers to each other, spent 96 days (14 weeks) locked up together under the supervision of 32 cameras fitted around the house.[4] Four of the housemates, Ashmit Patel, Dolly Bindra, The Great Khali and Shweta Tiwari, reached the final week, facing public vote. The show ended on 8 January 2011 with the grand finale. Shweta Tiwari emerged as the winner, going away with a prize money of ₹ 10 million, while The Great Khali was announced as the runner-up.[5][6]

Salman Khan was appointed as the new host for the series.

Housemates

Wild card entries
  • On 14 October, it was announced that the WWE wrestler, The Great Khali is going to replace Devender (Bunty), who was ejected from the house on day 2 for bad behavior and breaching of house rules.
  • On 25 October, Dolly Bindra entered the Bigg Boss house and on 27 November, Dolly made a return to the Bigg Boss house as a wild card entry.[16]

Week 3 Tasks
  • Dhan Dhana Dhan!: All housemates have to print notes. Each note is worth 1000 points. Housemates have to accumulate a total of 50,00,000 points in notes. Hrishant and Shweta have been given the task of robing 15,00,000 points. Dhan Dhana Dhan was unsuccessful with the task, but secret agents Hrishant and Shweta have been successful.
  • Except for Rahul and Khali, all housemates have to eat from the same plate and bowl for a whole week. Housemates can only eat after Rahul and Khali.
  • Dixcy Scot task is a wrestling match between the male inmates. The captain Manoj becomes the finalist. Great Khali is the referee and consultant. Female participants are the cheerleaders, except for Shweta, who plays anchor/host with Begum Ali.

Week 4 Tasks

Week 10 Tasks
  • Jaago Ghar Walon Warna Waat Lag Jaaegi: The housemates will be allowed to sleep between 4am and 12 noon and two contestants will be nominated to perform a certain task in the garden area. The task is to counterbalance one's weight with the corresponding weight provided by Bigg Boss. A giant weighing scale has been provided in the garden area for the task. The first pair to try the task was Sara and Shweta.

Week 11 Tasks
  • Haath Choota Toh Kismat Phooti: The housemates will be divided into three pairs. The first pair will be Ashmit and Shweta, second pair will be Dolly and Veena and the third pair will be Samir and Seema. The housemates will be tied together with a handcuff and one member of each pair has to wear a blindfold and keep an egg on his hand all the time.[20]
  • Shweta and Ashmit are given secret task to hide important things belonging to Veena and Dolly, which they succeed in doing and earn 300 points each.

Week 12 Tasks
  • As a result of the previous week's mistakes, Bigg Boss has not provided any flour and housemates have to grind it themselves using chakki. They will also feed Khali as he has been directed not to take any food item by himself.[22]
  • This week housemates have to save water to promote save water campaign. Water will come in limited amounts in the morning and evening hours. Housemates have been provided buckets to store water for daily work.

Week 13 Tasks

Highlights of the week

Week 1 (3 October to 9 October)

  • Day 1: Bigg Boss asked all the contestants to vote. While all of them thought it is for the eviction, Bunty received the highest votes and on the contrary, Bigg Boss made Bunty the "Captain" of the house.
  • Day 2: Bunty was ejected, due to his bad behaviour, abusing and cursing Bigg Boss, breaking all the rules of the house and trying to cover the cameras by socks.[24]
  • Day 3: Bigg Boss gives a mini task for a chat show with Begum and the 4 nominated housemates. Transformation from Ali to Begum is no small occasion and all the women inmates got together to help her.
  • Day 4: Argument over breakfast between Veena Malik and Hrishant leads to a heating debate where most of the other inmates got involved in consoling the inmates.
  • Day 5: While the housemates are having paranthas for breakfast, Manoj Tiwari who is a vegetarian doesn’t appreciate sharing the same plate.
  • Day 6: Shweta Tiwari gets a cake to celebrate her daughter's birthday. Abbas Kazmi was evicted from the show.
  • Day 7: Begum was made the captain of the house.

Week 2 (10 October to 16 October)

  • Day 8: Sakshi was nominated via captain's vote. The housemates nominated Seema and Samir through open nominations.
  • Day 12: Rahul was elected the captain of the house.
  • Day 13: Sakshi was evicted from the Bigg Boss House. After exiting, Sakshi nominated Begum. WWE wrestler The Great Kahli appeared on the show.

Week 3 (17 October to 23 October)

  • Day 17: Manoj was elected captain of the house. Rahul was ordered to wash clothes of the inmates, after he failed to enforce Bigg Boss rules in his captaincy.[25]
  • Day 20: Begum was evicted from the house.[26] Before exiting, Begum nominated Khali.

Week 4 (24 October to 31 October)

  • Day 21: Dolly Bindra entered the house as a wild card entry.[27]
  • Day 22: Housemates decide to boycott Dolly due to her behavior and verbal fight with Shweta.[28]
  • Day 24: Ashmit was elected the captain of the house.
  • Day 25: Dolly manipulates Ashmit and Hrishant to believe that she is innocent and pins the night’s chaos on Sara. Consequently, after being manipulated, Ashmit and Hrishant plan to nominate Sara and Shweta.
  • Day 26: Bigg Boss stages a fake eviction process and sends Sara to a secret room. Before exiting, Sara nominates Dolly and Samir.[29]
  • Day 27: Salman Khan enters the house and spends a day with the inmates.[30]

Week 5 (1 November to 7 November)

  • Day 28: Most of the inmates had been breaking rule of talking about nominations. Bigg Boss cancelled the nomination procedure and nominated those contestants who have been breaking this rule. Late at night, Sara re-entered the house.
  • Day 30: Ali Merchant enters the house as a guest.
  • Day 31: Bigg Boss announces that Ali and Sara will marry on 10 November inside the House. Dolly has an argument with Ashmit regarding task. Hrishant becomes the new house captain beating Samir 6-5 in vote count.
  • Day 33: Rahul is evicted from the house.

Week 6 (8 November to 14 November)

  • Day 35: Ashmit and Dolly have a verbal fight in the kitchen. Housemates nominate Dolly, Ashmit and Aanchal for the next week's nominations.
  • Day 38: Sara Khan and Ali Merchant wed inside the house.
  • Day 39: Aanchal was evicted from the house. Shweta becomes the house captain beating Veena 7-5 in vote count. Ali Merchant was also asked to leave the house.

Week 7 (15 November to 21 November)

  • Day 42: Dolly was nominated via captain's vote. The housemates nominate Sara and Khali through nominations.[31] Dolly and Seema had a fight in the Kitchen; Seema subsequently decides to quit the kitchen team.
  • Day 44: Dolly has a verbal fight with Shweta and Samir. Pamela Anderson enters the house as a guest. Bigg Boss decides to cancel the eviction.
  • Day 45: Samir and Dolly were evicted from the house following a huge fight in which they broke most of the rules.[32]
  • Day 47: Pamela left the house. Salman Khan invited Dolly and Sameer. Dolly apologised to Sameer and admitted her mistakes. Salman asked Sameer if he wants to re-enter the house. Sameer agreed, however the decision was left to Bigg Boss.

Week 8 (22 November to 28 November)

  • Day 49: Samir returns to the house. Seema was elected the new captain beating Khali in the vote count. Ashmit was nominated via captain's vote, while the housemates nominated Shweta, Hrishant, Samir and Veena.[33]
  • Day 50: Bigg Boss has given a task to the leftover contestants of the house that they have to portray the characters of hardcore villagers and modern city people. Bigg Boss has divided them into two teams. The village team composed of Shweta, Samir, Veena and is headed by Ashmit. Whereas the modern city people team is headed by Seema and comprises Sara, Hrishant, Manoj and Khali. The city people have to stay inside the house and dress in a modern way and eat only continental food. Whereas the villagers have to stay in the garden area, dress in the village garb and eat food made on stoves. Both the teams have to remain in their respective areas, which is defined by the ‘Lakshman Rekha’.
  • Day 51: Bigg Boss asks the city people to make a huge stack of dominoes on the wooden floor. On the other hand, the villagers are asked to make cow dung cakes. Later Bigg Boss also interchanges the teams of Khali and Shweta.
  • Day 52: Seema was asked to submit two names for next week's captains. Seema submitted Manoj and Khali's name.
  • Day 53: Khali won a majority of votes, hence becoming the new captain of the house.
  • Day 55: Hrishant was evicted from the house. Before exiting he nominated Shweta and Samir.

Week 9 (29 November to 5 December)

  • Day 56: Dolly enters as a wild-card entry in Bigg Boss, packed in a locked wooden box placed in the garden, where the villagers are sleeping. Samir is called to the confession room and given the key to the box. When Samir open the box, Dolly pops out of the box.
  • Day 57: Bigg Boss gave a task known as Paathshaala, where Seema, Manoj and Ashmit act as teachers while rest of the housemates are students.[19]
  • Day 58: Bigg Boss hosts an award-giving ceremony in the house, conducted by Dolly Bindra.[34]
  • Day 60: Dolly becomes the new captain beating Veena 6-1.[35]
  • Day 62: Manoj was evicted from the house. Before exiting, he nominated Sara and Samir.[36]

Week 10 (6 December to 12 December)

  • Day 63: Sara was nominated via captain's vote while the housemates nominate Veena and Samir, through open nominations.[37]
  • Day 65: Veena has an argument with Ashmit over the task. Dolly faints inside the house. A doctor comes for her treatment.[38]
  • Day 68: Khali was elected captain of the house for the second time, beating Seema and Dolly.[39]
  • Day 69: Sara was evicted from house. Before exiting, she chose Ashmit to be safe from the next nominations.[40]

Week 11 (13 December to 19 December)

  • Day 70: Bigg Boss asked the captain Khali to nominate one pair from the blindfolds and handcuffs task. Khali nominated Samir and Seema.[41]
  • Day 71: Bigg Boss takes back the captaincy from Khali due to breaking of house rules by the housemates. Khali is asked to make food for all the contestants as a punishment. A secret task is given to Shweta and Ashmit to steal some of the favourite things of Dolly and Veena.
  • Day 76: Seema was evicted from the house. Before exiting, she nominated Khali and Veena.[42]

Week 12 (20 December to 26 December)

  • Day 78: Shweta was elected the house captain for the second time beating Ashmit by 3-1. The housemates nominated Veena, Ashmit and Khali for the next week's nominations, though the names are not disclosed by Bigg Boss.[43]
  • Day 80: Dolly has an argument with Ashmit and Veena about the cleaning of kitchen. The argument soon turns into a verbal fight.[44]
  • Day 81: Veena is punished by Bigg Boss for dancing on the dining table. Ashmit is shown an edited footage of all the other housemates bitching against him.[45]
  • Day 83: Veena was evicted from the house. Before exiting, she chose Ashmit to be safe from the next nominations.[46]

Week 13 (27 December to 2 January)

  • Day 84: Dolly, Samir and Shweta were nominated.[47]
  • Day 90: Samir was evicted from the house.[48]

Week 14 (3 January to 8 January)

  • Day 94: Big Boss asked the remaining contestants; Ashmit, Dolly, Khali and Shweta to nominate one housemate who they would like to evict from the house. As the other housemates got confused, Ashmit volunteered his own name. Bigg Boss announced that Ashmit will remain in the house and he would get a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs, regardless if he wins the show or not.[49]
  • Day 96: Shweta was declared the first female winner, Khali was the runner-up, while Ashmit and Dolly received the third and fourth places respectively. Samir received a Chevrolet-Cruz for being the bold and stylish contestant.[50]

Ratings, reception and viewership

  • According to data available with aMap, a television viewership monitoring agency, the opening episode of Bigg Boss 4 on Colors got a rating of 3.6. Season 3 had average rating of 2.43 while Bigg Boss 1 and Bigg Boss 2 had average ratings of 1.96 and 2.03. While Bigg Boss 1 was anchored by Arshad Warsi, Shilpa Shetty hosted Bigg Boss 2 and Amitabh Bachchan for Bigg Boss 3.[51]
  • During the Sara-Ali wedding episode, the show received a TRP of 4.4 and when Dolly-Shweta-Sameer fight took place and Pamela Anderson entered the house, the show received a TRP of 4.8.[citation needed]
  • The Grand Finale episode on 8 January 2011, received a TRP of 6.7, which was the highest among the finale of other Indian reality shows such as Kaun Banega Crorepati, Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega, MasterChef and DID –Li'l Masters.[52]

Controversies

During the first week of the show's airing, activists of Shiv Sena, a political party, started protesting against the inclusion of Pakistani housemates in the show.[53] After being evicted from the house, Rahul Bhatt claimed that Bigg Boss is scripted.[54] In November 2010, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry served a notice on Colors, due to complaints of indecent exposure aired on national television, asking the channel to change the timings of the show from 9:00 pm to 11:30 pm.[55][56] The channel later got a stay order from Bombay High Court allowing them to continue the telecast of the show during prime time.[57]
