Geostorm is a 2017 American disaster film[1] co-written, produced and directed by Dean Devlin as his feature film directorial debut. The film stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Maria Lara, Richard Schiff, Robert Sheehan, Daniel Wu, Eugenio Derbez, Ed Harris and Andy García. The plot follows a satellite designer who tries to save the world from a storm of epic proportions caused by malfunctioning climate-controlling satellites.

Principal photography began on October 20, 2014, in New Orleans, Louisiana. After poor test screenings, re-shoots took place in December 2016 under executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis and director Danny Cannon.[6] The film is the first co-production between Skydance Media and Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was released by Warner Bros. in the United States on October 20, 2017 in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D. It has grossed $29 million worldwide and received generally negative reviews, with critics praising the special effects but calling the film as a whole "uninspired"[7]

Plot

In 2019, a coalition of 18 nations[8] band together and commission "Dutch Boy", a system of satellites designed to control climate on a global scale. Some time later, at a Senate sub-committee hearing, Jake Lawson, Dutch Boy's architect, verbally attacks Virginia senator Thomas Cross for insinuating less-than-diplomatic notions about his conduct and is subsequently replaced by his brother Max.

Three years later, a United Nations field team stationed in Afghanistan comes across a village that has been frozen, along with its inhabitants. U.S. President Andrew Palma calls an emergency meeting of his Cabinet, where it is revealed an alleged malfunction in the satellite responsible for maintaining Afghanistan's weather was responsible. When Palma requests that the incident be covered up, Max, who works under Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom, demands that they take responsibility. Palma consents to sending someone to the International Climate Space Station, prompting Max to reluctantly suggest Jake.

Max approaches Jake at his house in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where he has lived for the past three years, intermittently accompanied by his daughter Hannah (who has been under shared custody with Jake's ex-wife after the sub-committee fiasco, costing him his home and marriage), to persuade him to go back up into the job. Jake is at first cold and unresponsive to his brother's advance. However, after Max appeals to Jake's passion for his work, he agrees. Meanwhile, an extreme increase of temperature in Hong Kong results in a massive gas leak, destroying part of the city and nearly killing Cheng, Max's college friend and the Dutch Boy Program's Hong Kong bureau chief.

Upon arriving at ICSS, Jake is introduced to Ute Fassbinder, the commander of the space station, along with his crew. When the crew tries to investigate one of the malfunctioning satellites, the machine holding the satellite malfunctions, causing the satellite to be broken beyond repair, and all of its data is lost. Meanwhile, Cheng contacts Max, who tells him that he can't access the Hong Kong satellite despite having the authority to do so. He also tells Max that if the malfunction continues, the world will suffer from "Geostorm", a chain reaction of massive disasters all over the world that will lead to millions of people dying. Max, being the man in charge of the Dutch Boy, also can't access the satellite. He enlists Dana, a friend of his who is also a hacker, and discovers that his authority is blocked. During a blackout, Cheng's office is raided by armed mercenaries. Cheng manages to hide and decides to fly to the States to tell Max.

In another attempt to find the cause of the malfunction, Jake and Ute fly outside the ICSS to retrieve a flash drive which has been ejected into space, following a freak accident which killed a member of the ICSS. However, Jake's suit malfunctions, causing his boosters to go out of control and nearly gets himself out of reach of the ICSS. After being rescued, Jake reveals to Ute that he has retrieved the flash drive, but has kept it secret from his crew, suspecting that someone's tried to kill him. Jake and Ute attempt to find the source of the error, but are blocked by someone; Jake concludes that someone within the White House is responsible. Jake tells Max about this in an encrypted message. Meanwhile, Cheng meets up with Max, but is killed when someone pushes him and he crashes into a car, but not before he tells Max about Zeus. Max and Dana crack Jake's encrypted message and discovers that Zeus is a simulation program which deduces which possible scenarios will happen to every country when the Dutch Boy satellites malfunction.

Jake and Ute, with the help of Dussette, discovers a data kept by the dead ICSS member in a locker and discovers that the entire system has been infected by a virus. Jake believes that the President is behind the attack and is using the Dutch Boy as a weapon. He tells Max in order to restore Dutch Boy, he needs to reboot the system entirely, but not before he receives the kill code, held by the President. Max asks Sarah, his fiance and a Secret Service agent, to help him to acquire the kill code.

During the presidential campaign in Orlando, Max reveals his intentions to Dekkom, in which Dekkom agrees to help. Max eventually escapes after Dekkom attempts to kill him, being the one behind the malfunction of the Dutch Boy. Max eventually tells Sarah, and they decide to "kidnap" President Palma. They manage to save President Palma and escape from the stadium before a massive thunderstorm blows up the stadium. After outsmarting Dekkom's mercenaries, Max and Sarah confront him about his intentions with the Dutch Boy before he's arrested: to use it to wipe out all of America's enemies and kill the candidates in the upcoming Presidential election.

Meanwhile, the virus affects the entire ICSS, causing the self destruct mechanism to activate. It was a defense mechanism created by Jake in case of crashing to Earth. Jake realizes that Duncan, one of the ICSS crew members is the inside man, and the one who's initiating the self destruct program. Duncan is killed, and Jake escapes. As the crew evacuates, Jake decides to stay behind in order to ensure that the reboot is complete. Max and Sarah manage to escort the President to a nearby NASA facility, where it is revealed that while the Geostorm can be stopped, it cannot stop the destruction of the ICSS. Ute decides to also stay behind in order to help Jake, and manages to reboot the system, preventing the Geostorm. They manage to take shelter in an attached satellite, and manage to escape from the exploding ICSS and arrive safely on Earth.

Six months later, Jake manages to reclaim his job as the engineer of the Dutch Boy, with the Dutch Boy given to the international committee. The movie ends with Hannah narrating that no-one can change the past, but people can embrace the future, as a rocket flies in the distance to the stars above.

Cast

Katheryn Winnick had been cast as Olivia Lawson, Jake’s ex-wife and the mother of Hannah, but during reshoots, her role was recast with Julia Denton.

Production

The pre-production began on July 7, 2014.[10] Dean Devlin would direct the science fiction action film for Warner Bros. with Gerard Butler attached to star as the lead,[11] and Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris and Andy García also starring.[12] On August 19, Alexandra Maria Lara joined the film's cast to play the commander of a space station and also Butler's character's love interest who helps him save the world.[13] On September 26, Katheryn Winnick was added to the cast to play Olivia, Butler's character's ex-wife and mother of Hannah.[14] On October 8, Eugenio Derbez was added to the cast of the film.[15]

Filming

With an initial budget of $82 million,[16] principal photography began on October 20, 2014, in New Orleans, Louisiana,[17][18] and lasted through February 10, 2015.[18] Filming began on Loyola Avenue on the first day.[19] Some NASA scenes were filmed at NASA Facility in New Orleans in November 2014 and January 2015.[20][21]

After poor test screenings in December 2015, $15 million reshoots were conducted in Louisiana in early December 2016, under new producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis and director Danny Cannon. Winnick's role was recast with Julia Denton during reshoots, while new characters were added into the script.[6]

Marketing

On October 16, 2017, Warner Bros. released a viral video on its YouTube channel. In the video, a New York taxicab drives into an ice storm affected city block, much to the shock of its passengers.[22]

Release

The film was originally set for release on March 25, 2016,[23] but in August 2014, Warner cancelled this, and released Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on that date instead.[24] On December 11, 2014, WB shifted its live-action animated film Jungle Book to 2017 and gave its previous date from March 25, 2016 then October 21, 2016 to Geostorm.[25] In September 2015, the studio again moved back the film from October 21, 2016, to January 13, 2017.[26] In June 2016, the studio announced the release had been moved back from January 13, 2017, to October 20, 2017. The film had an IMAX release.[27]

Box office

As of October 20, 2017, Geostorm has grossed $4.3 million in the United States and Canada, and $25.5 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $29.8 million, against a production budget of $120 million.[4]

In North America, the film was released alongside Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, The Snowman and Only The Brave, and is expected to gross $10–12 million from 3,246 theaters in its opening weekend.[5] After not holding Thursday night preview screenings, the film made $4.2 million on Friday.[28]

Critical response

On review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 13% based on 31 reviews, with an average rating of 3.7/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Lacking impressive visuals, well-written characters, or involving drama, Geostorm aims for epic disaster-movie spectacle but ends up simply being a disaster of a movie."[29] On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating to reviews, the film has a weighted average score of 21 out of 100, based on reviews from 17 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[30] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B–" on an A+ to F scale.[28]

Peter Sobczynski of RogerEbert.com gave the film one-and-a-half our of four stars, stating that "the real disappointment about [Geostorm] is that it doesn’t even work as the camp suggested by the trailer.... [T]hey lack the lavish visual pyrotechnics nor the wit or style to make any of the destruction slightly memorable."[31] Mark Kermode of the Kermode and Mayo's Film Review radio program stated that the film "takes stupid to a whole new level.... Honestly, and I say this, I think it's the stupidest film I have ever seen", emphasizing that "it's more stupid than Angels and Demons, and that's not a phrase I thought I'd ever say out loud".[32]
