Tu Sooraj Main Saanjh Piyaji (English: You're the sun, I'm the twilight, beloved) is a 2017 Indian television soap opera that airs on Star Plus. The series stars Rhea Sharma and Avinesh Rekhi in Lead Roles. It is the sequel to the series Diya Aur Baati Hum. Neelu Vaghela, Ashok Lokhande, and Kanika Maheshwari reprise their roles from that series. The series premiered on 3 April 2017. It was originally broadcast in the afternoon Every Monday to Friday at 1:00 PM IST during the Star Dopahar Programming Block. On 24 July 2017, the series was moved to the Primetime, and Thus It replaced Star Plus Second Longest Running Show Saath Nibhaana Saathiya at the 7:00 PM time slot. It airs Every Monday to Saturday at 7:00 PM IST since 24 July 2017 on Star Plus. It has been remade in Telugu as Agni Sakshi which aired on Star Maa from 4 December 2017. The series has also been remade in Bengali, with the title Ardhangini which airs on Star Jalsha since 8 January 2018.

Plot

The story is based on the life of the children of Sooraj and Sandhya mainly featuring the life events of their daughter, Kanak. Bhabho ignores and looks down upon Kanak because according to her, Kanak is the reason for the death of Sooraj-Sandhya, but later upon realising mutual love for each other accepts Kanak as family. Due to unprecedented circumstances, Kanak gets married to a ritualistic and superstitious but good-hearted gentleman, named Uma Shankar, a blind believer in morals taught by his opportunistic and money-grabber, hypocrite maternal aunt, Nanda Devi. Kanak sets off on a journey with Uma Shankar, who is her perfect opposite, to teach him the greatest moral of life i.e. humanity, while she gets criticized by Palomi and repeatedly harmed by Maasi saa, and later, her lewd son, Aditya. In the process, she herself falls in love with Uma after establishing herself as the perfect wife for him.Despite being so long and boring, the character impacted named 'Aditya' has made it far more interesting. The show takes it turn in bangkok where Uma and Kanak plot to expose Maasi saa and Aditya, and prove ‘Palomi’ is alive. Meera Mittal makes her entry in the show where she married Uma Shankar, creating rift between Uma and Kanak.

2 Years Later

Kanak enters again in Uma's and Meera’s life. Meera wishes to destroy Kanak’s life joining hands with Akshay, Arpita's brother, a man whom Kanak loves and is her fiancé. Akshay is really betraying Kanak and is helping Meera in her motive. Akshay and Meera plot to send Kanak to Jail on Akshay and Kanak's wedding day.

Character Sketch

• Kanak Sooraj Rathi / Kanak Uma Shankar Toshniwal is a free-spirited, cheerful and easy-going girl who believes in women empowerment and has an undaunted zeal (like her mother Sandhya) to protect her loved ones from any harm or impending danger, and a firm disposition (like her father Sooraj) in materializing her thoughts and perception regarding something, be it faith, religion or relationship.

• Uma Shankar Toshniwal is an ayurvedic practitioner by profession and business tycoon and a blind believer in the faith and religion his devoted maternal aunt "Maasi-saa" taught him from the very childhood. However, his relationship with Kanak gradually changes his conception making him more attached to humane feelings and slowly uprooting the seeds of superstition/blind faith deeply imbibed in his core.

• Meera Mittal / Meera Uma Shankar Toshniwal is an Insane Woman obsessed with Uma.

• Akshay is Arpita's Brother and Kanak's Fiancé, who is a modern-age guy who loves to live life and make people smile with his cute jokes and charm. He is full of energy and develops a bond of love with everyone he meets. Bhabho has chosen him for Kanak and now they are taking their relationship forward.

• Vansh Sooraj Rathi is Kanak's elder brother and Ved's younger fraternal twin who is unlike his twin a careless of his duties, towards his household and being jobless can't financially contribute to the family. However, he is staunch and often insensible to other's feelings, and can easily misinterpret people and circumstances, He cares deeply for Kanak and goes to any length for her, however his efforts usually end up getting things more troubled. But has changed after his marriage to Saraswati Toshniwal.

• Saraswati Vansh Rathi also known as Saras is a docile, kindhearted and devotional girl who is Uma's younger sister and was trapped by Vansh in the name of the love which he faked for her in order to get revenge from Uma to forcefully marry his sister Kanak, but Saras whose love is genuine for Vansh desperately tries to make their marriage survive ,by even going to the extent of dressing up as a modern-day girl "Sarah". Recently, their relationship has improved due to clearing up of Vansh's previous misunderstandings about her and Uma.

• IPS Ved Sooraj Rathi is Kanak's elder brother and Vansh's elder fraternal twin. An IPS officer like his mother Sandhya, who is wise in opinion and stable at job. He falls in love with Payal, and with the help of Kanak, successfully nullifies her marriage with the devious Aditya, saves her and later, gets married to her.

• Payal Ved Rathi is Previously Aditya's wife (having been married to him in childhood). She was insecure of her position as the daughter-in-law of the Toshniwal household upon the arrival of Kanak and briefly plotted against her with her mother, but later realised her mistake after she was aided by Kanak to move out of her loveless dysfunctional relationship with Aditya, and start life a new with her lover later husband, Kanak's brother, Ved.

• Santosh Arun Rathi also known as Bhabho is Kanak's judicious and adamant grandmother with a strict demeanour, who helps her often in conducting her relationships, especially in clearing Uma's perspective of religion; by giving rational advises.

• Arun Rathi also known as Babasaa is Sooraj's father and Kanak's grandfather; a benevolent and foodie person who is at times, forgetful but can lightly handle out tough situations and is the main emotional support behind the strength of his wife, Santosh "Bhabho".

• Nanda Devi Modani also known as Maasi Saa is a treacherous, hypocritic and oppurtunistic, cunning lady who is Uma's maternal aunt and has taught him wrong morals and made him orthodox in opinion and lifestyle to maintain her importance in his life and could reign over his property with her crime-partner,her devious son Aditya. She is the main antagonist in Uma's life and his relationship with Kanak.

• Aditya Modani also known as Adi/Vicky is Maasi Saa's nefarious son who is cunning, lewd and greedy for money and other materialistic pleasures.He ran away from home at early age for leading a lifestyle not bound by Uma's rules and regulations, and upon returning also tried to utilize Payal as a means to clear his debts. He couldn't succeed in his cruel intentions due to Kanak and Ved's interference and has been thrown in jail, post his divorce with Payal.

• Golu Vikram Rathi is Kanak, Ved and Vansh's elder cousin brother who is excessively attached to his mother Meena.
• Rani Golu Rathi is Golu's wife who previously worked as a maid servant to the Rathis and is just like her mother-in-law, Meena.

• Meenakshi Vikram Rathi also known as Meena is Vikram's wife and Kanak's aunt, she is cunning and to some extent greedy for money, outgoing and boisterous, but cares deeply for Kanak and her brother having raised them up as her own children. She had previously been traumatized by her husband's infidelity but that was all a lie on his part to save her from the shock of their daughter, Mishri's misconduct to have a illegitimate child.

• Vikram Arun Rathi is Sooraj's brother and Kanak's uncle, he lied to his wife Meena about Pavan being his illegitimate child to hide their daughter's misconduct from her. He is like a father-figure to Ved, Vansh and Kanak.

• Palomi is a lady who has been given shelter at Uma's household, but has, over time, fallen in love with him and is now obsessed with Uma. She is thus, arch rival and is favored by Maasi saa against Kanak.
