Nina Bo'Nina Brown is the stage name of Pierre Leverne Dease,[2] an American drag performer and YouTube/reality television personality. He is best known for competing on the ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race.

Early life

Dease was born on July 12, 1982 in Columbia, South Carolina.[3] His drag name originally was "Beatta Bitchass" until he changed it to Nina Bo'Nina Brown.[4] He auditioned for RuPaul's Drag Race ever since season five.[5] He was the makeup artist for some of Phi Phi O'Hara's looks for her "365 Days of Drag" project.[6]

Career

Brown was announced as one of fourteen contestants competing on the ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race on February 2, 2017.[7] She was the winner of the premiere episode challenge with Lady Gaga as the guest judge.[8] In episode four, she voiced her thoughts on not being cast as model Blac Chyna for the Kardashian musical challenge. She named her 2018 tour "I Shoulda Been Blac Chyna", after this moment.[9] Drag Race alum Alaska also referenced this moment in a line of her song "Valentina".[10] She placed in the bottom two three times before being eliminated on the makeover episode, after losing a lip sync of "Cool for the Summer" by Demi Lovato against Shea Couleé.[11]

One of Brown's catchphrases, "Sue Me" was an inspiration for Björk's song of the same name on her 2017 album Utopia.[12] Model Tyra Banks was accused of using one of Brown's runway looks for her December 2017 cover of Paper magazine.[13][14]

In June 2018, she was sponsored by MAC Cosmetics to review and promote the 2018 Aaliyah collection.[15][16] She dressed as a humanoid zebra in the July 2018 issue of Paper, modeling for Gypsy Sport's Fall 2018 campaign.[17] She modeled again for Gypsy Sport's Spring 2019 campaign.[18]

She appeared with Vanessa Vanjie Mateo for two episodes of the WOWPresents internet series "Fashion Photo RuView" on November 3 and 17, 2018, filling in for Raja and Raven.[19][20]

Personal life

Dease is openly gay.[21] He has struggled with depression and anxiety since moving to Atlanta, Georgia before the show.[22][23] He received death threats from fans after Valentina's elimination from Drag Race, and Dease received some backlash after retaliating with a racist comment about Latin-Americans.[24] Dease later apologized for the posts on October 2017.[25]
