Suggest merge

This page should be merged with List_of_Tour_de_France_winners Davidreid (talk) 06:02, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I think it should not be merged. Potentially there could be lists for mountains, points and young riders classification, which could lead to a featured topic with the aforementioned list as the main list. It would be in similar vein to List of Grand Prix motorcycle racing World champions and List of men's major championships winning golfers. NapHit (talk) 12:21, 30 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Before the peer review

This article was listed for peer review. Before this is done by somebody outside of the cycling project, I thought I would do my own review.

I went through the article and changed what I thought was necessary. One major issue I see is the "history" section. What is this the history of? It seems to be the history of the Tour de France rather than of the general classification winner. Why is it important here that the Tour changed to the team-format in 1930?

I did not solve the issue, because I don't know how to. It would be silly to write a history about the list of Tour de France classification winners. And the history each general classification winner belongs to the biography of the winner, and the history of the general classificaiotn belongs to the general classfiication article.

One more thing: is it common to use the alt-tags for the images in this way? The descriptions such as "A man in a white shirt and tie" made me smile. :)

I hope the peer review will be helpful!--EdgeNavidad (talk) 16:16, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

disqualified winners

Should the striking of Lance Armstrong (and Landis, Contador) be made more clear. For example by more explicitly listing disqualifications, something like....

Arnoutf (talk) 15:59, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

personally, I think it's fine the way it is, as the note, gives the reader all the detail they need regarding the disqualifications. Although, I'd like to hear a few more opinions about this. NapHit (talk) 09:31, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I like Arnoutf's suggestion. It does not take much more space and presents the information in a more compact way. In any case, if Armstrong has been officially stripped from his Tour victories, he should not appear as winner in the table, as he does now in the article.--Gorpik (talk) 08:32, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to see what type of advantage he had (margin) over other players while he was doping.. and a strike out would show that — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.194.222.254 (talk) 03:43, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In response to the above strike request - this list is not just a representation of historical fact it acts as a punishment to the drug cheats who are scrubbed from the results. Armstrong himself has said in interview (paraphrase) 'if you look at the history-books of the Tour [he means no doubt Wikipedia] there is a blank and it can't remain that way'. Well it can and it should because it is the clearest sign to anyone interested in pro cycling and potential young pro rider that drugs cheats will be forgotten and have their titles removed. There could be no stronger message to young riders and pro's today, this blank acts as a message and a warning.

Stripped titles

Why are some stripped titles shown as blank lines, while others are still shown but are highlighted in yellow and have footnotes? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:B:9E80:692:223:6CFF:FE97:9886 (talk) 00:43, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The footnotes themselves explain the reason.--Gorpik (talk) 07:30, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
All the other articles as far as I can see show Lance Armstrong with his name in strikethrough and an accompanyign footnate (e.g. here). This seems to be the general consensus. The logic is that at one time LA was declared as the winner of the tour/stage etc... however we was subsequently stripped of those wins. I propose implementing the same in this article, so it is consistent. The totals for wins by athlete, country etc.. won't change. Rehnn83 Talk 11:28, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'd also do the same for the other "stripped" winners, (Contador, Schleck etc...) Rehnn83 Talk 11:29, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Someone else appeared to re-add in Armstrong as a winner (and removed the notes showing he's disqualified/stripped of those titles). I've partially reverted those changes but I've added Strikethroughs to names as per this discussion.Rehnn83 Talk 08:21, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There's been a few edits recently removing the strikthroughs from Lance Armstrong's name and adding/removing him from the tabulated list of winners. This has been discussed to a great extent on a number of wikipedia articles. The community consensus on how to list this. Listing Armstrong's name with a strike-through is also the style the organisers of the tour Amaury Sport Organisation use on their website. There's no reason to go against that for this wikipedia article Rehnn83 Talk 08:41, 21 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone one step further today. There was too much emphasis on Armstong winning the titles "... but..." In effect, he never won the titles. I have rephrased so as to lead with the UCI's action of stripping the titles as a result of LA's drug cheating, and to move to bottom of lede. He should not be in the same para as genuine winners. Rangasyd (talk) 14:13, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Third paragraph introducing noteable past winners

I am disturbed that this 'noteable past winners' list begins with an entire sentence dedicated to drugs cheat Lance Armstrong. And only thereafter are greats like Hinault and Anquetil seen to get a mere mention. Yes the 90's drugs debacle was huge for the sport but part of the punishment meted out to the unrepentant Armstrong was his name being redacted from the record book. So I think it is not appropriate to list him before other past multiple-Tour winners especially when he is no longer officially recognised as the winner of 7 TdF titles. I've therefore moved the un-edited sentence about Armstrong to below the details about noteable past Tour champions to better reflect the significance of the recent and not so recent history of the Tour. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stevexyg (talkcontribs) 13:32, 3 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
