WWE is an American professional wrestling promotion based out of Stamford, Connecticut. Title reigns are either determined by professional wrestling matches or are awarded to a wrestler, as a result of the culmination of various scripted storylines.

WWE divides its roster between five brands, where wrestlers exclusively compete, albeit with some exceptions. The three primary brands that WWE promotes are Raw, SmackDown, and NXT.[1][2] Specialty brands include 205 Live, which is for male wrestlers 205 lbs. and under (designated by WWE as cruiserweights), and NXT UK, which is for wrestlers based in the United Kingdom—both of these specialty brands are considered as being part of NXT.[3]

Raw, SmackDown, and NXT each have a primary and secondary championship for male wrestlers, a singles championship for female wrestlers, and a tag team championship for male wrestlers. There is also one tag team championship for female wrestlers that is shared between the three brands. There is one championship for the cruiserweight wrestlers that is shared between NXT, NXT UK, and 205 Live, and one male singles, one female singles, and one male tag team championship for NXT UK wrestlers—a secondary championship for NXT UK will soon debut. There is also one tertiary championship, which is accessible to anyone, regardless of gender or WWE status.

There are currently 18 championships in WWE. Among the five current brands, 24 wrestlers hold the championships (including one interim champion) as of September 16, 2024. The list includes the number of times the wrestler has held the title, the date and location of the win, and a description of the winning bout.

Overview

Men's singles

At the top of WWE's championship hierarchy for male wrestlers are the WWE Championship on Raw, the Universal Championship on SmackDown, and the NXT Championship on NXT. The WWE Championship is held by Drew McIntyre, who is in his second reign. He defeated Randy Orton in a no disqualification, no countout match on the November 16, 2020 episode of Raw.[4] The Universal Championship is held by Roman Reigns, who is in his second reign. He won the title by defeating previous champion "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman, who Reigns pinned, in a No Holds Barred Triple Threat match at Payback on August 30, 2020.[5] The NXT Championship is held by Finn Bálor, who is in his record-tying second reign. He won the vacant title by defeating Adam Cole at NXT Super Tuesday II on September 8, 2020; previous champion Karrion Kross relinquished the title due to injury.[6]

Secondary titles for male wrestlers include the United States Championship on Raw, the Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown, and the North American Championship on NXT. The United States Championship is held by Bobby Lashley, who is in his second reign. He won the title by defeating Apollo Crews at Payback on August 30, 2020.[7] The Intercontinental Championship is held by two-time champion Sami Zayn, who won the title by defeating previous champion Jeff Hardy and AJ Styles in a three-way ladder match at Clash of Champions on September 27, 2020.[8] The North American Championship is held by Leon Ruff, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Johnny Gargano on the November 11, 2020 episode of NXT.[9]

Men's tag team

Tag team championships for male wrestlers include the Raw Tag Team Championship, the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, and the NXT Tag Team Championship. The Raw Tag Team Championship is held by The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods), who are in their third reign as a team (fifth for Kingston individually), while the SmackDown Tag Team Championship is held by The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford), who are in their first reign. As a result of the 2020 WWE Draft, then-SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day were drafted to Raw while then-Raw Tag Team Champions The Street Profits were drafted to SmackDown. To keep the branded championships on their respective brands, WWE official Adam Pearce had the two teams trade championships on the October 12, 2020 episode of Raw (which was Night 2 of the draft).[10][11] The NXT Tag Team Championship is held by first-time title holders Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan, who defeated Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango) on the October 21, 2020 episode of NXT.[12]

Specialty

The WWE 24/7 Championship is a tertiary championship shared across all five brands and is open to anyone regardless of gender (including non-WWE personnel). It can be defended anytime, anywhere, as long as a WWE referee is present. The title is held by R-Truth, who is in his record 45th reign. He won the title by pinning Akira Tozawa backstage at Survivor Series on November 22, 2020.[13]

The NXT Cruiserweight Championship is the only championship of the 205 Live brand and is also defended on NXT and NXT UK. It is for wrestlers 205 lb (93 kg) and under (referred to as cruiserweights); the only championship in WWE with a weight limit. The title is held by Jordan Devlin from NXT UK, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating former champion Angel Garza, Travis Banks, and Isaiah "Swerve" Scott, who Devlin pinned, in a fatal four-way match at Worlds Collide on January 25, 2020. Due to a travel ban as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Devlin is unable to defend the title in the U.S., thus a separate title holder was crowned to serve as interim champion in the U.S. Santos Escobar from NXT is the U.S. based interim champion in his first reign. He won the title (under the persona of El Hijo del Fantasma) by defeating Drake Maverick in the interim championship tournament final during the May 27, 2020 taping of NXT (aired June 3).[14]

Women

At the top of WWE's championship hierarchy for female wrestlers are the Raw Women's Championship, the SmackDown Women's Championship, and the NXT Women's Championship. The Raw Women's Championship is held by Asuka, who is in her second reign. She defeated Sasha Banks by submission at SummerSlam on August 23, 2020.[15] The SmackDown Women's Championship is held by Sasha Banks, who is in her first reign. She won the title by defeating Bayley in a Hell in a Cell match at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view on October 25, 2020.[16] The NXT Women's Championship is held by Io Shirai, who is in her first reign. She won the title by defeating previous champion Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley, who Shirai pinned, in a triple threat match at TakeOver: In Your House on June 7, 2020.[17]

The WWE Women's Tag Team Championship is the only tag team championship for female wrestlers in WWE, and is shared between the Raw, SmackDown, and NXT brands.[18] It is held by Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler from Raw, who are in their first reign. They won the title by defeating Bayley and Sasha Banks at Payback on August 30, 2020.[19]

UK

The top title of NXT UK is the NXT United Kingdom Championship. It is held by Walter, who is in his first reign. He won the title by defeating Pete Dunne at TakeOver: New York on April 5, 2019, ending Dunne's reign at 685 days.[20] The NXT UK Women's Championship is held by first-time title holder Kay Lee Ray, who won the title by defeating Toni Storm at TakeOver: Cardiff on August 31, 2019.[21] The NXT UK Tag Team Championship is held by Gallus (Mark Coffey and Wolfgang), who are in their first reign. They defeated Mark Andrews and Flash Morgan Webster during the October 4, 2019 taping of NXT UK (aired October 17).[22] A secondary championship, the NXT UK Heritage Cup Championship, was introduced in September 2020; the tournament final to determine the inaugural champion is set for the November 26, 2020 episode of NXT UK between A-Kid and Trent Seven.[23][24]
