Regarding IIT BHU Page

Hi! You seem to have completely ignored the previous conversation we had regarding the moving of the IIT BHU page. The details can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:AKS.9955/Archive_8#Regarding_Page_Move.

I would request you to kindly respond to this at the earliest.

 Shobhit102 | talk  07:39, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear admin, page Indian Institute of Technology, BHU has to be moved to Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi since that is the correct name of the institute as per IIT amendment act. Please help. Thanks, Arun Kumar SINGH (Talk) 06:10, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an admin, but I'd like to say I'm fairly well acquainted with the way WP:RM works. I suggest you file a page move request on Talk:Indian Institute of Technology, BHU using the {{requested move}} template for community input. Also, take a look at WP:OFFICIAL and WP:COMMONNAME. Anarchyte (work | talk) 11:05, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've put a CSD notice on the latter page to see what an administrator thinks of it - Twinkle is a very good program for doing so quickly - and I suggest that if you want any more pages moved in this way, do the same.--Launchballer 15:07, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Launchballer, that is NOT how page moves are performed. Besides, I had asked for an admin help (you are not an admin) and you should NOT have closed the template while the issue is still open. I very well understand how to nominate articles for CSD but I dont think that is how we should be treating this case. I have removed the CSD and the "helped" tag. Arun Kumar SINGH (Talk) 04:23, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • There are several issues here, but the two central points, I think, are the following.
  1. For a proposal to move a page where there is disagreement, posting a request for administrator help on a user talk page is not the way to deal with it. Among other reasons, doing it that way means that the discussions are visible only to editors who somehow know which editor's talk page to go to. The proper place for such discussions is the article talk page, and instructions on how to do it are at Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
  2. Normally, unless there are special reasons for making an exception, Wikipedia aims to use the name most commonly used, which is very often not the same as the "official" name of an organisation, so "that is the correct name of the institute as per IIT amendment act" is not necessarily a good reason for making the move. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 09:06, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello JamesBWatson, thanks for your time. I agree with you on all counts but reason I requested is due to continued request of Shobhit102 who rightfully raised the topic and I am sure now is clear on the subject. Since the discussion was here, I asked for help here, but as you rightly pointed out, in future I will make sure to put all such requests on the article talkpage. Cheers, Arun Kumar SINGH (Talk) 09:12, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • JamesBWatson, I checked the article talkpage and the second move discussion is not that controversial. Suggestion had all supports and the last user even mentioned that the official name of the institute is "Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi" (same as suggested above). Do you recommend I open a discussion on the article talk page before you can perform the move? Arun Kumar SINGH (Talk) 09:57, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, I have no spent more time looking into this. For future reference, it is more helpful in cases like this to give a little more explanation of the background, as you can't expect someone new to the discussion to spend a lot of time searching through the editing history of several different pages to see what is going on. I have now seen that there was a move discussion which resulted in a consensus to move the article to Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, and that one editor later moved it to another title, as far as I can see without further discussion, so I have moved it back to that title. If anyone now wishes to have the article moved to any other title, then he or she needs to make a new move request, in accordance with the instructions that I linked to above. Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Member of parliament, Lok Sabha you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. DYK nomination of Everest (cigarette)

Hello! Your submission of Everest (cigarette) at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! FrickFrack 20:03, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This was not a clear keep. Please revert and let an admin close it? czar 03:03, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello Czar, sorry for replying late. Although the AfD was a clear keep, but since you brought it up, do you still want me to reopen the AfD? The way voting / debate on AfD took place, it is good candidate for WP:SNOW. I am ok in opening the AfD again, let me know (although I don't see a different outcome). Cheers, Arun Kumar SINGH (Talk) 16:50, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Seema Malaka

The article Seema Malaka you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Seema Malaka for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. DYK for Everest (cigarette)

On 23 August 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Everest (cigarette), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that since the Beatles' audio engineer Geoff Emerick used to smoke Everest cigarettes, Abbey Road was originally planned to be titled Mount Everest, Everest or Ever Rest? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Everest (cigarette). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Everest (cigarette)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Recent non-admin closures

Hello, Arun. I noticed that you've recently been closing some of the AfD's for state-level pageant winners. This issue is currently the subject of controversy, as evidenced by the RfC taking place on the talk page of the Beauty Pageant project. As such, these closures fall within the scope of Pitfall #1 of the guidelines for non-administrator closures. Although I am not asking you to undo any of these closures, I do ask you to reconsider whether you should be doing any more of them. NewYorkActuary (talk) 15:19, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello NewYorkActuary, thanks for your message. There is a difference between "dispute / controversy" and "open discussion". What you are talking about is an open discussion here which is NOT at ALL controversial or disputed. It is an open discussion and as per the existing guidelines (incl GNG) + the consensus built on the individual AfD, I performed the NAC. Trust you are clear now. Cheers, Arun Kumar SINGH (Talk) 16:06, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not the most brilliant close I've ever seen. Would you self-revert, please?—S Marshall T/C 16:32, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Because part way through the debate I discovered that the article was also a copyright violation, and said so, but this point received no attention. It was inappropriate to close the debate as "keep" when that argument was present and had not been addressed.—S Marshall T/C 17:33, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I performed Copyvio check and it is far from violation (only 11.5% confidence). I noticed your comment on the AfD, but as we stand now, this is not a case of copyvio. If you are confident of copyvio, kindly consider 2nd nomination or a DRV. Cheers, Arun Kumar SINGH (Talk) 17:38, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
