Question from Itsrobbeh (21:58, 6 March 2024)

How do i edit an article, and also how do i make an article, thank you --Itsrobbeh (talk) 21:58, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Itsrobbeh, it seems you already know how to edit articles. You can see how to make an article in the page Help:Your first article. Hope this helps. — ♠Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. ♠ 22:54, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New page reviewer granted

Hi Ixtal. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:23, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Apps newsletter – First quarter of 2024

Hello, and welcome to the app’s first newsletter in 2024!

It has been a long year; we published four editions of our newsletter, which you can go through all of them. In this edition, we will cover our work for the last quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024!

Android

  • Edit Patrol (also known as Patroller tasks on Android) has been released to Beta testers with rollback rights on Test Wiki and Indonesian Wikipedia. We had a productive meeting with Indonesian users to introduce and discuss the new patrolling tasks feature on the Android app, as we provided a detailed presentation on the feature, and collected valuable feedback from the Indonesian community to enhance the user experience.
For those interested, a meeting recording is available.
We conducted outreach to Spanish, and French Wikipedia communities during February 2024.
  • We hosted two synchronous community consultations & recorded a third where we shared the Edit Patrol suggested edit workflow, and showed designs for Saved messages and templates:
  • Places feature is back to the Wikipedia Android app!
Places is a feature that allows you to discover articles by location.
The iOS app was able to maintain the feature via use of Apple Maps, but it was necessary for Android audiences that we continue using an open source map.

iOS

  • Suggested Edits on iOS prototype is in the experimental build. Instructions to test the feature can be found on this FAQ page.
Alt text is text associated with an image that serves the same purpose and conveys the same essential information as the image.
The app's product manager presented our team's work and prototype (iOS suggested edits) to the GLAM conference audience. All details can be found in the presentation's deck.
  • It is now possible to donate using Apple Pay directly from the app.
  • IOS Native Editor Improvement Development is out!
You will be able to edit, find and replace, and insert links and images directly from Commons without any performance issues!
Additionally, it is now possible to edit a full article page and a talk page.

In the current quarter, we aim to engage with editors from LATAM, Spanish-speaking regions, North America, and the Caribbean to test Suggested edits and the new native editor features.

Community meetings

  • We participated in the GLAM conference in November 2023. All the details are mentioned in the iOS section of this edition from the newsletter.
  • On December 1st of 2023, The Wikipedia Android team met with Indonesian users to introduce and discuss the new patrolling tasks feature on the Android app. The team provided a detailed presentation on the feature and collected valuable feedback. A meeting recording is available.
  • We joined the Wiki Editoras Lx editathon on December 16th to gather feedback about an alt-text Suggested Edit task on iOS.
Attendees were generally positive about the prospect of the feature. Experienced editors thought it could be a good task for on-boarding new editors, but also a more casual way of contributing for new editors.

And you can subscribe to this newsletter.

Telegram DRN Case

I have seen a lot of DRN disputes closed for a lot of reasons, mostly different reasons why they weren't proper disputes for DRN. I think that this is the first time that an editor has tried to use DRN to appeal a block on a non-English-language encyclopedia. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:01, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I once suggested, and still think it is a reasonable idea, that there be a guide consisting of one or two paragraphs in each of 100 or 200 languages, telling what you should do if you are trying to edit a non-English encyclopedia and have run into problems. The English Wikipedia is not really a home encyclopedia, but if it isn't the mother encyclopedia, it is the elder sister encyclopedia, the first of them, and some users think that we are the home encyclopedia, and there will be no harm in providing a little information to lost users. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:01, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That could be a good idea, but I'm not sure how we'd make such a guide outside of machine translation, Robert McClenon. — ♠Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. ♠ 14:20, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Thoma Bravo

Hi Ixtal, I'm reaching out because you offered to help my colleague Megan a while back. An IP made similar inappropriate edits to Thoma Bravo and Orlando Bravo, the the latter of which was reverted by another editor due to "WP:POV WP:CHERRYPICKING." However, the edit to Thoma Bravo was never reverted. I would revert it myself but I feel it might be more appropriate for someone without a conflict of interest to do so. Would you mind making the edit? Thank you, JBarTB (talk) 13:58, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Falinksrules (00:39, 22 March 2024)

Hello, Can you help me understand what can be considerer subjective writting. --Falinksrules (talk) 00:39, 22 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Falinksrules, is this a general question or does it have to do with a particular article? — ♠Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. ♠ 09:54, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
this is just a general question. Falinksrules (talk) 18:14, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmm I'm sorry to say I don't know how to best explain it to you, Falinksrules. Our guide on writing better aticles could give you some pointers, but I really recommend asking the friendly people over at WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors. They'll be glad to explain to you and/or provide some useful guides on avoiding subjective writing. — ♠Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. ♠ 18:36, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

Question from Tylerguy25 (12:33, 23 March 2024)

How do I add a link between articles? And how would I know when one needs to be added? --Tylerguy25 (talk) 12:33, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tylerguy25, see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking for an in-depth explanation of all the different links one can add on the wiki and where/how to do so. For linking between articles, you can add two square brackets like [[Wikipedia]] to produce Wikipedia. The principles section of the guide I linked explains well when to add them, but you'll also learn through experience. Don't be afraid to add extra links if you're not sure they're needed or not! If anything someone will kindly let you know when you've overlinked. — ♠Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. ♠ 09:56, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from KEP95 (23:03, 23 March 2024)

Question on editing etiquette: I added a small amount of clarification (that about:blank is the name of a production company, not a typo) to a sentence, but I decided not to list it as a minor edit since it wasn't only a grammatical change. Should I have labelled it as a minor change or was that correct? --KEP95 (talk) 23:03, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I only mark changes as minor when the reader would not be able to notice it's been made (e.g. fixing typos, removing extra spaces, etc.). Your edit in my eyes was correctly not labeled as minor. — ♠Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. ♠ 09:59, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from KEP95 (23:19, 23 March 2024)

Question on spacing in the editor affecting spacing in the article: I wanted to edit out about 10 double space sentence openers in the article on PKD's The Divine Invasion, they're incongruent with the formatting of the rest of the article, which uses the usual single space at the beginning of their sentences; and while I can find the extra spaces easily enough, there are other double spacings in the editor that don't appear in the article. I figured I'd ask you why that is before editing the page; are there some tricks with having double spaces appear when using the editor? --KEP95 (talk) 23:19, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

KEP95, I'm afraid I don't understand the question. Could you rephrase? — ♠Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. ♠ 10:00, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sappygang (22:44, 30 March 2024)

Hello! I wasn't expecting Wikipedia to have gotten so user friendly in the past years haha! You even get a mentor now, really cool

I'm wondering what the "edit / add citation" part in the articles I referenced on the DPP3 page mean? Is that something only I see as the one who added them? Also would you say my writing style is appropriate?

And really cool that you study in Eindhoven, I'm also doing my Bachelor's (in bio) in the Netherlands (in Nijmegen, at Radboud), cool coincidence! --Sappygang (talk) 22:44, 30 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to meet you, Sappygang! Glad to see you find the wiki to be much more user friendly.
Edit/add citation is something that we can see when editing a page. Other editors can edit your citations, for example to add additional information or fix typos. One thing you might see eventually is a bot account or an experienced editor using user scripts to add links to archived versions of a source. Your writing style seems very appropriate. Your edit to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals was a good way to remove promotional language.
Cool you study in NL as well, truly a small world! I hope you stick around the wiki ^u^ — ♠Ixtal ( T / C ) Non nobis solum. ♠ 09:53, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Ixtal,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
