Novak Djokovic is the two-time defending champion. Djokovic will attempt to win a record-breaking seventh Australian Open singles title; he and Roy Emerson currently hold the record with six titles each.
This will be the first Grand Slam tournament since the 2002 US Open in which Roger Federer is ranked outside the top ten. It will also be the first Grand Slam tournament in which Sir Andy Murray starts as World No. 1 and top seed.
The top two seeds (Murray and Djokovic) are in contention for the No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. Djokovic will regain the top ranking only if he wins the title and Murray fails to reach the semifinals.
