Stan Wawrinka was the defending champion, but was unable to defend the title due to a knee injury that ended his season prematurely.[1]
Novak Djokovic also withdrew due to an elbow injury that ended his tennis season as well.[2] Thus, this will be the first men's singles draw at the US Open since 1971 to include neither finalist from the previous year's tournament.
Defending semifinalist Kei Nishikori was unable to compete due to a wrist injury, which also ended his season.[3] This means that only one of the semifinalists from last year, Gaël Monfils, will be vying for the title.
The top three seeds (Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer) are all in contention for the ATP no. 1 singles ranking at the start of the tournament. Each player is guaranteed the top ranking if he wins the title. Otherwise, Federer and Murray must reach at least the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, in order to have a chance of regaining the top ranking from Nadal.
