Caroline Wozniacki is the defending champion.

Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens, Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitová, Elina Svitolina, Kiki Bertens, Karolína Plíšková, Caroline Wozniacki, and Aryna Sabalenka are in contention for the WTA no. 1 singles ranking at the start of the tournament. In order to have a chance at taking over the top ranking from Halep, Stephens and Osaka must reach at least the quarterfinals; Kerber and Kvitová must reach at least the semifinals; Svitolina, Bertens, and Plíšková must reach the final; and Wozniacki or Sabalenka must win the title.

Serena Williams will attempt to equal Margaret Court's all time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

This will be the first Australian Open to feature a final set tie-break. When the match reaches 6–6, the first player to reach 10 points and be leading by at least 2 points wins the match.
