Madhupur is a town with municipality in Deoghar district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is a subdivisional town. It is famous for the production of sweets.

History

Madhupur Junction railway station was used to store coal which was used as a fuel for steam engines.

Historically, there were many notable people, particularly from Bengal, who owned a house in Madhupur and lived there for long periods whenever they could. Amongst them were Sir Asutosh Mookerjee. His younger son, Uma Prasad Mookerjee, the writer famous for his travel books spent time there

Location

Madhupur is at 24°16′N 86°39′E / 24.26°N 86.65°E / 24.26; 86.65.[1] It has an average elevation of 228 metres (748 ft). Madhupur is surrounded by two monsoon rivers, Pathro Nadi and Jayanti Nadi. They feed the Ajay, which is a tributary of the Ganges, meeting it at Katwa in West Bengal.

Overview

The map shows a large area, which is a plateau with low hills, except in the eastern portion where the Rajmahal hills intrude into this area and the Ramgarh hills are there. The south-western portion is just a rolling upland. The entire area is overwhelmingly rural with only small pockets of urbanisation.[2]

Madhupur Block of Deoghar district has total population of 190,748 as per the Census 2011. Out of which 98,716 are males while 92,032 are females. In 2011 there were total 33,270 families residing in Madhupur Block. The Average Sex Ratio of Madhupur Block is 932.

As per Census 2011 out of total population, 29% people lives in Urban areas while 71% lives in the Rural areas. The average literacy rate in urban areas is 79.5% while that in the rural areas is 59.6%. Also the Sex Ratio of Urban areas in Madhupur Block is 912% while that of Rural areas is 941.

The population of Children of age 0–6 years in Madhupur Block is 34439 which is 18% of the total population. There are 17477 male children and 16962 female children between the age 0–6 years. Thus as per the Census 2011 the Child Sex Ratio of Madhupur Block is 971 which is greater than Average Sex Ratio ( 932 ) of Madhupur Block.

Madhupur Junction is connected by road and rail to metropolitan areas of India.Madhupur station lies in Delhi-Kolkata Main Line (via Mugalsarai-Patna route). Giridih district headquarters is connected to the Indian Railway network through the Madhupur-Giridih Local train on the Madhupur-Giridih-Koderma line. It is well connected by road from Giridih and Deoghar.

Deoghar Airport is under construction (31 km [19 mi] from Madhupur). Construction commenced in January 2018 and expected to finished in December 2020.
