Ryūnosuke Kamiki (神木隆之介, Kamiki Ryūnosuke, born May 19, 1993) is a Japanese actor, voice actor and YouTuber.[1][2] He began his career as a child actor at 2 years old. Regarded as a child prodigy[3][4][5] across his 25 years in the industry, he has garnered many awards for his performances.

Personal life

After he was born, he was in the intensive care unit for four months and remained in critical condition for two months. As an infant, he lost weight rapidly due to a gastrointestinal disease of unknown cause, and it was dangerous enough that the doctor said the survival rate was 1%. According to the doctor, even if he survived he would still be disabled. He was finally discharged from the hospital when he was seven months old. His mother came up with the idea of making him a child actor because she had been pondering why he was born in this world, and from that, we can see that he was raised with a lot of love.[6] His family consists of his grandparents, father, mother, a sister who is 11 years older than him and two nieces. His grandmother died in 2020.[7]

Kamiki mails his parents every time there is an earthquake to ask them if they are alright.

From his early days, he was obsessed with trains and loved to draw them. His first love was during kindergarten. He started liking a girl when she said she liked him. But the next day, the girl was holding hands with another boy.

Kamiki attended Kitahara Kindergarten in April 1997 and graduated in March 2000. He entered Fujimi Shiritsu Tsuruse Elementary School in April 2000 and graduated in March 2006.

He entered Meguro Nihon University Junior High School in April 2006 and graduated in March 2009. When he was in junior high, he joined the ping pong club. He said it would be no fun if he didn't know how to play table tennis when visiting hot springs. His special skills are tennis, table tennis/ping-pong, darts. Once he got into a fight in school, but because his public image is so etched into everyone's brain, his parents were surprised since this was "out of character for him".

He graduated from Horikoshi High School in 2012 together with Hey Say Jump’s Yamada, Chinen and Yuto. Kamiki is a mood maker in class. He thought that everyone in class looked like Noh masks, Since it was boring as is, he decided he should do something interesting so that the in future, his classmates remember that there was a strange guy called Kamiki in class.

He took the trouble to change into a Santa Claus costume which he had prepared beforehand with his teachers' permission. The hat was illuminated and he did all his class that day wearing the costume with a shiny head. Not only Santa Claus, but he brought "horse head" and "3D glasses" to school, and when wearing the glasses, he exclaimed "The teacher looks three-dimensional! The characters also appear to stand out! The teacher replied with a bitter smile, "I don't think that's (The 3D glasses) the reason!"

He thought that he would be tired from work and sleep in class but he was so busy entertaining the classroom that he did not have time to sleep.[8][9]

He plans on retiring at age 42 and becoming an acting instructor.[10]

While reviewing his Wikipedia page on YouTube, he has expressed his wish that, he would be happy if Wikipedia would kindly change his picture, if not to other one's than to his official Amuse picture.[11][12]

Career

He made his debut at the entertainment industry at 2 years old for a commercial for a Toy box. His drama debut was the role of Naoya Kurosawa in the drama "Good News" in April 1999. He has been doing voice acting since the age of 5. He met Kantarō Suga while attending elementary school. They first met on an audition and worked together in omnibus movie “ZOO”. He began acting as a child actor after entering the Central Group talent agency. Kamiki won the Rookie Award 2020 for Elan D'or Award Ceremony. One of the most prestigious awards in Japan, for completing 25 years in the industry.[13]

Kamiki took part in the "Save with stories" project about celebrities reading fairy tales. It is aimed at supporting and entertaining children who are forced to stay at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. The videos were posted on the organization's Japanese Instagram account.[14]

He was afraid of swimming before but while filming for The Great Yokai War,[15][8] he overcame his fear. He starred in the highest-grossing anime film Your Name.[16] As of 2020, he has been an integral part of all The Top 3 highest grossing Japanese Movies as well as appearing in the no.1 highest grossing Japanese live-action movie in Japan of all time.[17][15][18] For his role in Kokoro no Ito, he learned sign language and played the piano.

In 2014, he starred in the drama adaptation of the novel "Henshin". People who watched it seem to be roughly divided into those who were fans of reading the original one before and those who first touched the work in this drama. But everyone had a common impression. That is, the acting of Kamiki, who played the role of the main character Junichi Naruse, was done wonderfully. He expresses how a young man who survived a dying severe illness is dominated by another personality due to a miracle operation. People who were fascinated by the power of acting devilishly praised it one after another.[19]

He is widely loved and appreciated by many famous Japanese actors and screenwriters. He worked with well-acclaimed Japanese screenwriter & director, Kankuro Kudo for the 1st time in 2011, playing the main character in the award winning TV drama 11 nin mo iru!. They worked together again in the 2016 film Too Young to Die and for the 2019 NHK Taiga drama Idaten: Tokyo Olympics Banashi.[20] It is a running Gag in his fandom and amongst his closest friends, that whatever he wishes for he somehow ends up getting it.

In 2020, he became the brand ambassador for "Hondashi", alongside Shun Oguri and Hana Sugisaki. While filming the commercial, the atmosphere between the three veterans were so infectious that the director, for the first time in his career could not say cut as it was so much fun to watch them.[21]

On May 19, 2020, it was announced that he would start the "25th Anniversary of Debut Project". On June 18, 2020, he created his own Youtube Channel, dubbed "Ryutube". The book titled "Omote Kamiki / Ura Kamiki" was released on September 25. It was made as one part of his debut 25th anniversary project, and it shows the "front side" of Kamikir, as well as the "back side" of him as a regular 27-year-old man. It contains feature words and illustrations by Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki. He debuted with his own radio show on All Night Nippon 0 (ANN0) on October 11, 2020, which will air late at night on the weekend.[22]

Kamiki directed the “I Treasure You” video for SUPER HANDSOME COLLECTION 「JUMP ↑」![23]

Kamiki met with four actors that he has spent a lot of time with, in both public and private. He talks about the theory of acting with Sometani Shota, the actor that Kamiki respects the most. He and Hayato Nakamura visit their alma mater Horikoshi High School. He also met up with Mirai Shida for the first time in a long time. Kamiki got worked up with Kanata Hongō talking about private matters. Footage of his meeting with these four actors are included in the bonus DVD.

There are interviews with Takashi Miike, Makoto Shinkai and Takeru Satoh, as well as messages from Kiichi Nakai, Aya Ueto, Ryo Yoshizawa, Perfume and Mamoru Hosoda. The book included an interview with his mother and a picture of the two. For those who purchased the book, there was an online talk show on October 3, and a private story time on the next day in which fans had the opportunity to talk to him, one on one via video call. Theatrical Plays[26][27]

In 2019, he made his theatre debut with the play "Beautiful-The Woman Who Met with God" Directed/Written by Suzuki Matsuo. This work premiered at Bunkamura Theater Cocoon in 2000 as the first full-scale musical by Suzuki Matsuo, who presided over the adult program. After that, it was re-performed in 2005 and re-performed in 2014, and this time, which was the fourth time, Matsuo did not appear and concentrated on the production in order to improve the completeness of the work. In collaboration with Yotaro Ito, who has been in charge of music since the premiere, he build a more dense and multi-layered world of work. The stage is "another Japan" where three ethnic groups have been in conflict for 100 years. A truly chaotic world where the opposite keywords such as "life and death", "despair and hope", and "adults and children" are mixed. A girl, injured, who was kidnapped and confined and grew up in the basement, jumps out into reality.

Yearly Calendars:[28]

Kamiki first started to conceptualize his yearly annual calendar in 2020. The theme of the calendar of 2020 being "Birthstones". He thought about the themes himself for each month as well as how to shoot for a year with the motif of the color of the birthstone and the stone language.[29]

The 2021 calendar is one of the 25th anniversary projects, thus being more ambitious. It all started with the "Novel characters I want Kamiki to play" video on his Twitter, urging fans to suggest novel characters for him to portray. Garning reactions from many celebrities including voice actor Yuki Kaji and film director Shunji Iwai, among others. Finally, 12 novels were selected from the retweets to represent the themes for the 12 months. The lineup expanded from classics to more recent pieces. The calendar shot by the renowned photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa was a new attempt to play different roles for twelve works in the calendar, but in the world view created by Ninagawa, they are beautifully embodied. In the novel "The Life of an Amorous Man" (as Yonosuke) published in August cover of the calendar, props such as smoke tubes are used in a colorful set to express the sex appeal of adults that has never been seen before by him, and the novel published in May cover, "No Longer Human" (as Oba Yozo), the darkness of human beings and the beauty of men are produced. Of the 12 novels so far, "Mysterious Weather at Yanaka's Retro Camera Store" (as Imamiya Ryuichi) and "Hamlet" (as Ophelia), including the prior mentioned novels have been confirmed. For this project Ryu challenged silver hair for the first time, shooting takling two days to complete. The calendar is set to be sold on December 25, 2020, to signify the 25 year anniversary.[30]

Photographer Debut

Kamiki was invited as the photographer for Satoh's 2021 Calendar. The concept of a "photobook-like calendar" featured natural expressions when spending time with friendsー with a sense of distance that can be taken by an old friend. It is a special calendar taken in places where Satoh wants to go with Kamiki and where he would like to take pictures of him such as driving the car, in Shibuya & Harajuku, in maid cafes, etc. He took over eight thousand photos. some are excluded in the desk calendar. He wants to have a photo exhibition and albums.[31][32]
