Portugal participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with the song "Foi magia", performed by Sofia Vitória.

Before Eurovision

The final was held on 18 January 2004 at the Endemol TV Studios in Mem-Martins, hosted by Catarina Furtado. Three acts competed and all songs were performed by the top three classified contestants of Operação Triunfo 2004 (Francisco Andrade, Sofia Vitória and Gonçalo Medeiros). The winner was chosen by televoting and the result was announced on 25 January 2004.[1]

At Eurovision

For the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, a semi-final round was introduced in order to accommodate the influx of nations that wanted to compete in the contest. Because Portugal placed 22nd at the 2003 contest, they was forced to compete in the first Eurovision semi-final, held on 12 May 2004. Portugal received 38 points in the semi-final which was not enough to qualify for the final. Therefore, Portugal will have to compete in the semi-final again in ESC 2005.
