  • 11 January – 2500 bus passengers were stuck in Kızıldağ Pass due to heavy snowfall. (Later they were rescued)
  • 13 January – 13 deaths due to avalanche in Tunceli Province
  • 14 January – Vehbi Koç was awarded by the International Chamber of Commerce as the businessman of the year
  • 25 January – Suleyman the Magnificent Exhibit in the United States
  • 10 February – Prime minister Turgut Özal underwent a heart operation
