C.I.D. (Crime Investigation Department) is an Indian crime detective television anthology series created by B. P. Singh for Sony Entertainment Television India and Sony Entertainment Television Asia. It stars Shivaji Satam as ACP, Aditya Srivastava and Dayanand Shetty as Senior Inspectors. The location of the series is set in Mumbai, India. Following a pilot episode on 29 April 1997, the series premiered on 21 January 1998 and is the longest running television series in India, having completed eighteen years in 2015.[1] The series completed 1000 episodes on Friday, 27 September 2013.[2]
Plot
Every day, a fresh new case is shown. Sometimes a case is being split across two episodes, but this happens occasionally. The series is an investigative series consisting of criminal cases that are solved by the CID team. ACP Pradyuman (Shivaji Satam), Abhijeet (Aditya Srivastava) and Daya (Dayanand Shetty) are an elite trio of officers who work for the CID. They seek the help of professional forensic expert Dr. Salunkhe (Narendra Gupta) and solve high-profile cases with the entire CID team. These characters find the crime suspects and wrong doers. The murderer in every episode is absolutely unpredictable and the series showcases exciting plots and thrilling adventures.
Production
Conception
Series creator, B.P. Singh, started working on the concept of C.I.D. while he used to work as a cameraman at Doordarshan, for ten years between 1973 and 1983. He said: "I was a news camera-man and handled the camera for about 10 years. Thereafter, I started getting an urge to break free. I thought I could see the scenes from a different and maybe better perspective. I asked Doordarshan if they were interested in serialising some detective stories. I started doing some groundwork by meeting some detectives, etc."[3]
Thereafter, while preparing for his film, Sirf Char Din (a murder mystery), he used to visit the Crime Branch. While there, he interacted with many officials, and was intrigued by the ongoing cases, the style of the detectives, and their modus operandi. He started reading detective novels, written by Shrikant Sinkar, and greatly liked his style of writing. Inspired by all of this, he started toying with idea of creating a detective TV series. Singh had already made six episodes in 1986, twelve years before the premiere of the show, and nine years before Sony TV was launched in October 1995. He did not do any research or surveys before the series conception and has intended to keep the episodes' storylines simple.[3]
Casting
Marathi theatre veteran, Shivaji Satam, who plays ACP Pradyuman, had worked with B.P. Singh on many projects before C.I.D.. "Having worked with B.P. on so many projects, I had to be part of CID," said Satam. Dayanand Shetty (Daya) was spotted by Sanjay Shetty, a member of the C.I.D. production team, in a community play, in which Daya was adjudged best actor. Singh was so impressed with Shetty that he finalized him five minutes into the audition. His character is amongst the most popular ones in the series along with Satam's character, Pradyuman. Aditya Srivastava who portrays Abhijeet, was introduced in the show as a criminal but was later added into the C.I.D. team. "I had agreed to only 26 episodes. In 1998, I was also doing some films, but BP sir gave me the flexibility to come and go as I felt like. But I began to enjoy the role of Abhijeet, and so stayed on," said Srivastava. Singh wanted Srivastava to be part of his team after seeing his work in Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya.[4]
Filming locations
C.I.D. is primarily shot in Mumbai, Maharashtra. During the long course of the show, the series has been shot in various locations all over India, which includes places such as Kolkata, Chennai, Manali, Shimla in Himachal Pradesh,[5] Jodhpur in Rajasthan, Kochi in Kerala, various places like Chandni Chowk in Delhi.[6]
Foreign locations have included places like Uzbekistan,[7] London, a major shoot in Paris, and Switzerland which included popular tourist attractions like Interlaken as well as cities such as Berne and Zurich. The major shoot in Paris-Switzerland was for the CID special episode "Aakhri Chunauti", and a part of the production team's 13th anniversary celebration plan. On shooting in abroad, B.P. Singh commented, "One of our USPs is outdoor location shoots. The moment the visuals are shifted to a foreign location we get to see interesting faces, hear different languages and see our characters in amazing locations". In terms of expenses incurred while shooting in foreign locations, Singh said, "While others find it difficult to have regular outdoors, we are very comfortable with it. Sony also supports us wholeheartedly in terms of finance".[8]
Episode format
C.I.D. originally aired on Wednesdays at 9:30 PM IST, before being moved to its current time slot at 10 PM IST in 2001. From its debut until 3 March 2006, the series format consisted of half-hourly episodes with each case being split across two episodes with the exception of several multi-part cases and crossovers with C.I.D. Special Bureau in 2005. On 10 March 2006, the format was changed to one-hour episodes with each case being covered in a single episode. On 21 May 2010, commencing from the episode "Rahasyamai Darwaza", C.I.D. was aired twice in a week on every Friday and Saturday with one case shown in a single episode with the exception of a few episodes. On 29 June 2012, commencing from the episode "Khooni Paani", C.I.D airs thrice in a week from Friday to Sunday.[9]

Beginning on 7 July 2006, a nationwide hunt called CID: Operation Talaash was launched, in search of a new officer to join the C.I.D. team, which ended on 1 September 2006. Vivek V. Mashru was declared the winner of the hunt, taking the role of a police inspector.[26]

Reception
Critical response
The series which is running with a record-breaking of over a decade and a half is one of the most popular shows ever on Sony TV.[32] It's a show that's enjoyed by all age groups, because of the format of the show. From ACP Pradyuman's logical explanations to the famous Daya, Darwaza Tod Do, the show has some really catchy dialogues. The most famous dialogue of the show is Kuchh to Gadbad hai. Other reasons for the popularity of the series is that since the show started, viewers have seen Daya kicking so hard at the door that every time the door breaks in to pieces and slapping the criminal.[33][34] The series entered in the list of top 10 most watched Hindi entertainment shows of 2013.[35]
Ratings
The series receives highly positive ratings. In December 2004, CID in the all India C&S 4+ market garnered a good 3.7 TRPs making it to the 29th place for the first time.[36] According to TAM, the show in September 2010 attained a peak TRP of 5.17 which was the highest TRP that the show had fetched in the last couple of years.[37] Currently, the series receives a rating of nearly 4.0 TRPs.[38]
