What is this bullshit with "anarchists by nationality"? Why not to have "anarchists by race" or "anarchists by hair color"? Fuck all artificially constructed identities! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.119.124.216 (talk • contribs) 17:28, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It does seem uniquely weird to have anarchists by nationality, true, but there are two practical reasons for doing so. (1) Anarchism rejects the utility and virtue of national identities, but it doesn't reject the fact that these national identities are significant in people's every day lives. National identities are "artificial" in the sense that they are human constructions, but they are not "artificial" in the sense of false. And perhaps more to the point, (2) Within Wikipedia, it is common to subcat by national identity. Without various (relevant) subcats, the larger cats become indigestible masses of information. Once you start trying to figure out what subcats are useful, hair color is indisputably not useful; but race and nationality are sometimes useful. Might it not be more in line with what these people identify as to list them as such things as "anarchists from america" or "anarchists from argentina" rather than american or argentinian. though labels are tricky territory, i would identify much more with being someone who happens to live in what's popularly recognized as the canadian state than a canadian. thoughts? --24.141.254.195 (talk) 18:58, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
