[edit]

This category really should be named "Opposition to Islam", rather than "Opposition against Islam".

Renaming this category

[edit]

This category should be renamed islamophobia Patauge (talk) 18:26, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agree entirely, Islamophobia is the established term, used by official sources including the United Nations and in academic contexts. "Anti-Islam" is a ridiculous title, would we (re)name Category:Antisemitism "Anti-Jew"? The Stockholm International Forum on Combating Intolerance recognized Islamophobia and Antisemitism as equivalent phenomena. The term is really only rejected by the Islamophobes themselves, i.e. people such as Anders Behring Breivik and those with similar views. Lukademi-demi (talk) 20:29, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As a matter of fact, Anti-Islam redirects to Islamophobia, indicating Islamophobia is the primary term. I suggest we just go ahead and rename the category to its proper title in line with the title of the main article on the phenomenon. Lukademi-demi (talk) 20:32, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
i agree on that.-- mustihussain  22:59, 12 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. Islamophobia is a recent term. Some of the sub-categories talk about objections to or hostility to Islam centuries ago. Anti-Islam is the more general and includes all the sub-categories.Jason from nyc (talk) 03:35, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree as well, it should redirect to Islamophobia since mainstream language dictionaries describe it as such. The fact that its a "new" word is irrelevant. Its been present since the early 1990's, the word is more than 3 decades old. NarSakSasLee (talk) 14:57, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If we check the parallel categories we have both Category:Anti-Judaism and Category:Antisemitism so it makes sense to have both Category:Anti-Islam and Category:Islamophobia as they are not the same thing. // Liftarn (talk)

If they are not the same thing, anti-Islam should not redirect to Islamophobia. That change should come first. Jason from nyc (talk) 19:44, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, but as far as I can tell it's almost only used on talk pages (Special:WhatLinksHere/Anti-Islam) so it could even be deleted. But if not, what should it redirect to? Criticism of Islam is probably the best fit as we have nothing corresponding to Anti-Judaism. Or perhaps it would be best to redirect it to Islam directly. If we don't do something bold and have it as a disambig page as earlier. // Liftarn (talk)
Anti-Islam is too generic. It could be nothing more than philosophical criticism but could be more insidious as in anti-Muslim persecution. Thus, one might have a disambiguation list like: criticism of Islam, criticism of Islamism, Islamophobia, persecution of muslims, counterjihad, etc. Picking one assumes we know what the reader wants. Perhaps it would be better to just delete the redirect and let the search engine create a list of suggestions. Jason from nyc (talk) 22:36, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately the page is locked so it would require an admin to unlock it first. // Liftarn (talk) 16:03, 23 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I went to Category:Religious discrimination expecting to find a sub-cat for anti-Islam discrimination, but found none there. Is there a specific reason this cat is not a subcat thereof? MatthewVanitas (talk) 20:16, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That was for the old Category:Islamophobia, but someone decided that you can't discriminate against Muslims. I wonder what would happen if someone would reduce Category:Antisemitism to Category:Anti-Judaism... // Liftarn (talk)

Current Consensus - 12 Aug

[edit]

I see no consensus from 12 Aug to today (18 Aug) so I reverted the insertion of text before the category list to reflect the consensus going into 12 Aug. according to WP:BRD. Jason from nyc (talk) 11:50, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your removal of content has been reverted. Please discuss before making such edits again. // Liftarn (talk)
Actually WP:BRD means revert and then discuss. Let's continue the discussion. Jason from nyc (talk) 01:41, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please explain your actions. // Liftarn (talk)
The discussion appears to be taking place at Wikipedia:Neutral point of view/Noticeboard#Equating opposition to Islam with prejudice, discrimination and irrational fear. Until a new consensus is reached please reframe from inserting the change. Jason from nyc (talk) 11:36, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, until a clear, new consensus is reach I will revert back to last good version. Thank you for understanding. // Liftarn (talk)
