Chegutu is a town in Zimbabwe.
Location
It is located in Chegutu District, Mashonaland West Province, in central northern Zimbabwe. It lies approxximately 120 kilometres (75 mi), by road, southwest of Harare, the capital, of Zimbabwe and the largest city in that country.[1] Chegutu lies on the main road, Highway A-5, between Harare and Bulawayo, the second-largest city in Zimbabwe, located about 340 kilometres (210 mi), further southwest of Chegutu.[2] The coordinates of Chegutu: 18° 8' 24.00"S, 30° 9' 0.00"E (Latitude:18.1400; Longitude:30.1500). The town sits at an elevation of 3,894 feet (1,187 m), above sea level.[3]
Overview
In addition to the offices of Chegutu Town Council, the town also accommodates the offices of Chegutu District Administration. The area around Chegutu is rich in gold ore. There are two big mines in the area, near where the old town was located. Royal Bank Zimbabwe, a commercial bank, maintains a branch in Chegutu.[4]
History
Before 1982, Chegutu was known as Hartley, named after Henry Hartley, an early hunter and explorer. The town of Hartley was approximately 35 kilometres (22 mi), east of where the town is located today. White settlers flocked to the area after gold was discovered here and the Butterfly Mine and Giant Mine, both sprung up. The settlement was moved to its present location in 1899. In 1901 the railway reached the settlement. Hartley was proclaimed a village in 1903 and was granted municipality status in 1974. In 1982 the town's name was officially changed to Chegutu.
Population
The current population of Chegutu is not publicly known. According to the 1992 Population Census, the town had a population of 30,191. The population was estimated at 36,000 in 2002. In 2004, the population of the town was estimated at 47,294.[5] The next national population census in Zimbabwe is scheduled from 18 August 2012 through 28 August 2012.[6]
