Disco is the upcoming fifteenth studio album by Australian singer Kylie Minogue, scheduled to be released on 6 November 2020 by Darenote and BMG Rights Management. A departure from her previous country-influenced album Golden (2018), it is influenced by 1970s and 1980s disco along with modern-day club music.[1][2] The lead single from the album, "Say Something", was released on 23 July of the same year and premiered on BBC Radio 2.[3] The second single, "Magic", was released on 24 September,[4] while a promotional song, "I Love It", was released a month later, on 23 October.[5]

Background

Minogue released her fourteenth studio album, Golden in April 2018. The album was a country pop and dance-pop record and was commercially successful, debuting at number one in both the United Kingdom and her native Australia.[6][7] Subsequently, it was certified gold in the former by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI).[8] Minogue then released her fourth major greatest hits album, Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection in June 2019, which also debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and Australia following a performance that attracted 3.9 million viewers at Glastonbury Festival, the most for any Glastonbury performance in history.[9][10][11] She stated that she would like to create a "pop-disco album" and return to recording new material after the performance.[12][13]

Minogue first began production on Disco in autumn 2019.[14] When she first began work on the album, as with her previous studio album, she did not have a concept solidified.[15] However, during her Golden Tour (2018–19) the setlist included a section influenced by Studio 54, which Minogue felt inspired by.[15] Following her first few studio sessions and discussions with her A&R, she felt her creative direction was "heading straight back to the dance floor" and creating a disco influenced album.[15]

Work continued on Disco during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, with Minogue using a home studio to record throughout lockdown.[16] Alistair Norbury, president of Minogue's record label BMG, announced to industry title Music Week that Minogue was also learning to record and engineer her own vocals using music software Logic Pro in order to continue working apace during lockdown.[17] Approximately 90% of the album was created via her home studio, with Minogue honing the album's theme of escapism during lockdown restrictions.[18]

As with her previous studio album, Minogue has also co-written all of the material herself. While she has written songs on every one of her albums since 1990, it is the first time she has engineered her own work.[19]

Singles

"Say Something" was released as the lead single from the album. It premiered on 23 July at 08:30 BST on BBC Radio 2, during the The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show.[20] It peaked at number 82 on the UK Singles Chart.[21] It also reached number nine on the UK Singles Downloads and Sales charts.[22][23] In the United States, debuted at number three on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales.[24] The music video for the song was directed by Sophie Muller[25] and filmed at the Black Island Studios in London, England while adhering to social distancing measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It depicts the singer travelling through the universe mounted upon a golden horse sculpture, shooting lasers from her hands and flying on a hovercraft.[26][27]

"Magic" debuted on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on 24 September,[28] and was released onto music services at 8am BST, the same day. The song was released as a single edit, while the album cut alongside "Say Something" appeared with the track on streaming services.[29] It debuted at number 75 on the UK Singles Chart and number nine on the Scottish Singles Chart.[30] Directed by Muller, the music video for "Magic" was filmed at Fabric, a nightclub in Farringdon, London.[31] It features Minogue dancing in the club alongside several dancers and sitting on a throne while wearing a golden jumpsuit. According to her, although Fabric was closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, she wanted "to give fans a moment of escapism to celebrate on a fantasy dance floor."[32]

"I Love It" was released as a promotional single on 23 October 2020.[33] On digital music platforms, the track was released as an EP that also featured "Magic" and "Say Something".[5] Two remixes of "Magic" were also included.[5]

Promotion

On 9 August 2020, Minogue was given a promotion on The Sound.[34] On 17 September, she performed "Say Something" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[35] On 30 October, Minogue was interviewed on 7.30.[36] On 1 November, she will return to The Sound. To mark the release of the album, Minogue will make an appearance on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Good Morning America and The Graham Norton Show to discuss the album and to perform "Magic" on 6 November.[37][38] The next day, she will live stream a special concert, 'Infinite Disco', featuring songs from the album as well as previously released songs spanning her career,[39] the latter reworked by Minogue's longtime contributors Richard Stannard and Steve Anderson.[40] The performance takes place on 7 November 2020,[39][41] and is co-directed by Rob Sinclair and Kate Moross,[40] having as well the numbers choreographed by Ashley Wallen.[40] The same day, will be airing a special on Rage.[42] On 10 November, she will make an appearance on The One Show.[43]

Commercial performance

On 21 August 2020, the head of BMG, Alistair Norbury, gave an interview with Music Week about the marketing campaign for Disco. Norbury noted that the label was happy with how things were going, noting that prior album Golden (2018) had sold 156,423 sales to date in the United Kingdom. According to Norbury, initial interest in Disco was outperforming the same stage in the album campaign for Minogue's previous album. This is according to key metrics such as: streaming, Amazon pre-orders, D2C pre-orders and video views.[44]
