Viacheslav Briukhovetsky, Vyacheslav Bryukhovetsky (Ukrainian: Брюхове́цький В'ячесла́в Степа́нович; 14 July 1947, Dzaudzhikau, North Ossetian ASSR), Ukrainian literary critic, social activist, Hero of Ukraine (2007), Order of Merit III Class (1997), reestablisher, Rector and first President (1991—2007), since 2007 Honorary President of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
Member of the National Writers' Union of Ukraine (since 1982). Doctor of Philological Sciences (1986). Member of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO, member of the Board of the Charitable Rinat Akhmetov Foundation[1], member of the Supervisory Board[2] of the "Union of Gifted Youth". Cofounder[3] of the CBO Competitiveness Council of Ukraine.
Cofounder at 1 Dec 2011 and member in 2011—2019[4] of the First December Initiative Group.
Viacheslav Briukhovetsky is included in the list of "100 great Ukrainians", which was compiled by the magazine The New Voice of Ukraine in 2020 and 2022. Indeed, his role in the development of Ukraine is similar to the role of Nicholas Brown Sr. or James Manning in the development of the United States.[5][6]
Biography[edit]
Viacheslav Briukhovetsky was born in Dzaudzhikau, the capital of today's Republic of North Ossetia–Alania and moved with his parents a short time later to Cherkasy in Ukraine, where he also went to school[7]. In 1966 he graduated as a nutrition engineer at the Institute for the Food Industry in Smila and then worked in Odesa, among other places. In 1967/68 he did his military service in the Red Army and in 1968 became a member of the CPSU, which he remained until 1990. Between 1973 and 1976 he was a correspondent and head of criticism for the newspaper "Literaturna Ukrainauk" and studied journalism until 1974 at the Faculty of Journalism of the National Taras Shevchenko University in Kievuk.
Bryukhovetskyi has been a candidate of pedagogical sciences since 1980 and a doctorate in philology since 1986. From 1982 to 1990, Bryukhovetsky headed the Department of Literary Theory at the Literary Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1982 he became a member of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine. In 1989 he was one of the initiators of the People's Movement of Ukraine. In 1989/90 he taught as a visiting professor at Rutgers University in the United States and the University of Manitoba, Canada. From September 19, 1991 he was rector, from 1994 president and from 2007 honorary president of the National University of Kiev-Mohyla Academy.
In 2005, Bryukhovetskyy became a member of the commission awarding the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine, and in 2006 he briefly served as a deputy of the Kyiv City Council as a candidate of the Our Ukraine party. He is also a member of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO.
