Dretch (Dungeons & Dragons)
In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the dretch is a type of demon.
Publication history
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition (1977–1988)
The dretch first appeared in the first edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in the adventure module The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (1982),[1] and the dretch (minor demon) was reprinted under the Demon heading in the first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[2]
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition (1989–1999)
The dretch (least tanar'ri) appeared in second edition under the Tanar'ri heading in the Monstrous Compendium Volume Outer Planes Appendix (1991).[3] The dretch (least tanar'ri) appeared for the Planescape setting in the first Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix (1994).[4]
Dungeons & Dragons 3.0 edition (2000–2002) and Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition (2003–2007)
The dretch appeared in the third edition Monster Manual (2000),[5] and in the revised 3.5 edition Monster Manual (2003).[5]
Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition (2008–2014)
The dretch appeared in the fourth edition Monster Manual 2 (2009).[6]
Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition (2014–)
The dretch appeared in the fifth edition Monster Manual (2014) under the demons section.[7]
Description
The dretch are the most common and least powerful of all demons. A dretch has a round, rubbery body and thin, spindly arms and legs.
Other publishers
The dretch appeared under the Demon heading in Paizo Publishing's book Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary (2009), on page 60.[8]
While creatures called dretch do appear in Garth Nix's The Seventh Tower book series, they are seven-foot spider-like Spiritshadows which do not resemble the Dungeon & Dragons dretch at all.
