Template:Contains Chinese text Huang Zitao (Chinese: 黄子韬; pinyin: Huáng Zǐtāo; born May 2, 1993), better known as Tao, is a Chinese rapper, singer-songwriter, producer, actor and martial artist. He debuted as the lead rapper for the South Korean-Chinese boy group EXO and its Chinese-based sub-unit EXO-M. In the summer of 2015 he made his solo debut with his digital mini-album T.A.O with 3 tracks under the newly adapted stage name, Z.Tao.[1] This debut album would proceed to break an unprecedented number of digital sales records by selling a total of 670,000 copies within its first week of release[2]

Early life

Huang Zitao was born in Qingdao, Shandong, China. Due to his mischievous nature as a child, his father placed him in martial arts training at the age of five.[3] He learned Wushu and was also a student-athlete during his school years.[4][5] In late 2010, Zitao reluctantly accompanied a friend to "MBC Star Audition" which was hosting a global talent search and was scouted immediately by a representative from SM Entertainment.[6]

Career

2011–2014: EXO

On December 27, 2011 he was formally introduced as the third member of EXO through a teaser that was posted on SM's official YouTube channel .[7][8] Zitao made his first television debut at the SBS Gayo Daejeon event on December 29, 2011[9]

In 2013 during the months of August and September, Zitao took part in filming for MBC's celebrity diving program Splash!. After a run of four episodes, the show was cancelled due to a number of celebrities (including Zitao) who were reportedly injured. The episodes aired from August 23, 2013 to September 13, 2013.[10]

In June 2014, Zitao appeared in Zhang Liyin's music videos for her singles, Agape released on August 5, 2014 and it's sequel Not Alone released on September 22, 2014. Tao, as the main protagonist of the videos story line, got the chance display his acting and martial arts skills alongside Victoria Song.[11][12]

In October 2014, Zitao was featured in the Chinese version of Rewind for Zhou Mi's album of the same name. The music video for the song was released on October 30, 2014.[13] He was also featured in another song from the album, Love Tonight. Zitao wrote the rap lyrics for both songs.

In July 2014, Zitao joined the cast of Solomon Islands edition of SBS' Laws of the Jungle. He had to leave the show earlier than expected due to foot injury on a coral reef during filming.[14] The episodes aired from October 17, 2014 to October 31, 2014.

2015: Lawsuit against SM and solo career

In June 2015, Zitao se up an official Chinese agency, 黄子韬Z.TAO Studio.[15] On August 24, he filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment to terminate his contract, the principal cause being due to health reason, mainly the aggravation of the ankle injury sustained at the Idol Star Athletics Championships.[16] During his years as an EXO member Zitao sustained many injuries.[17]

Music

2015: T.A.O, Z.TAO, M.O.M, Reluctantly, and I'm the Sovereign

On 23 July 2015, Zitao made his solo debut with a digital mini-album T.A.O. This debut album sold beyond expectations with 670,000 digital sales in its first week of release[2] which was unprecedented in China's lagging music industry.

On August 17, 2015 Z.Tao Studio announced that he will be releasing a self-titled album, Z.TAO, with the single Crown. The album was postponed due to the Tianjin explosions in Tianjin, China on August 12, 2015.[18] Zitao and his studio also rescheduled the release of the album as well as canceling two mini concerts.[19] The album was eventually released on August 19, 2015 for free and his first solo concert was held at the Beijing Exhibition Center Theater on August 23 as a charity concert for the explosion victims. He performed 8 tracks, including the songs from his first mini album.[20]

The music video for Crown was made in to a 7-minute martial arts short film directed by Nick Lentz, with the single as an original soundtrack. The Australian model and actress Jessica Gomes [21] and the actor Jeff Kobler co-starred in the short film which was about Huang Zitao's tragic love story that transcends time and space, he chose to relive the same traumatic day over and over again in order to catch a glimpse of his love.[22]

On October 15, 2015 Z.Tao releases the single Reluctantly, and emotional ballad about past love, composed by himself and by Grammy award winner Andros Rodriguez as mixer

On 5 December 2015, Zitao won his first music award, for ''Best Stage Performance'' at the 2015 Migu Music Awards, where he performed Reluctantly.[35]

As part of the endorsement deal with the game I'm the Sovereign, Huang Zitao composed and released the single I am The Sovereign and the song became No. 1 on China's Billboard chart for the week of December 5, 2015.[23]

2016: The Road

On January 12, 2016, Zitao won his 2nd music award "Most Influential Male Singer" at the 2015 Mobile Video Festival (Miopai Awards)[36] where he performed the song Alone.

In January 29, Zitao was invited to be one of the headlining artists for "SoYoung 2016 Live concert Tour", a live concert event that featured the most popular and fast rising musicians in China. He performed 5 of his songs: Reluctantly, Crown, M.O.M, I'm the Sovereign, and Feel Awake.[24][25] Zitao won the votes for 'most popular performer' of the event and the audience was rewarded with an encore performance of ''Reluctantly''.

During a Weibo chat in March, Zitao announced he was recording a new album. It's a double album to be released in physical form, as well as digital. Zitao traveled to Los Angeles to complete recording for the upcoming album and to once again collaborate with Director Nick Lentz (Crown) to shoot the music video for his comeback.[26] The lead single for the new album is titled, The Road Zitao explains that he both wrote and composed the title song and that it was a six-month process built upon his experiences. Zitao also states that he hopes the audience will hear the song and have a better understanding of him and his style of work.[27] The time of release is April 22, 2016, with the music video coming out on the 29th.

On March 24, 2016 Zitao announced his new concert tour titled The Road to take place in Nanjing, China on May 1, 2016.[28]

On April 22, 2016 Zitao announced that there will be 4 songs and 4 music videos with his new album The Road. On May 1st during the Road concert Huang Zitao revealed another music video for the song Hello, featuring Wiz Khalifa.[29] Huang Zitao also announced an Asia concert tour in November 2016.

Musical style, lyrics and composition

Once Zitao made an official return to the Chinese entertainment industry, he decided to focus on developing his music career, it was said that China's music industry was dying, and there was no future or money in that field, due to China's copyright problems, most entertainers focus on the movie industry, however Huang Zitao insisted, saying one must persevere in the things they love otherwise life is meaningless, he just wants for people to enjoy his music.[30]

Huang Zitao is involved in all aspects of his song's creation, lyrics, composition, production .

Huang Zitao draws inspiration to write music from his life experience, alternating between rap and soft vocals, to convey meaning and emphasize the feelings while singing the lyrics of a song. Music is a form of self-expression and way to for people to discover and get to the core of Huang Zitao as an artist. What he cannot express through words, he will express through music,[31] creating music for him, is a cathartic experience[32]

Writing music isn’t just a process of wanting to write it and being able to. I tend to rely on my past and personal experiences to inspire me. I’ll remember and reflect on the instances that have happened and include them in my songs, as well as to add substance to the flow and the melody. I write my own stories in my music through the emotions I feel.

Zitao expressed in several interviews that his true happiness comes from completing a song.[33]

Although Huang Zitao is primarily a rapper, he explores different genres Mandopop Ballad, EDM, Hip Hop, Chinese musical instruments he draws from these different styles in order to create C-Pop. that everyone all over the world will be attracted and listen to.[34] His inspiration is Jay Chou.[30] He mostly listened to Jay Chou growing up. Huang covered his song often on television. Huang has expressed a desire to continue as a musician with the goal of seeing C-pop receive more global recognition.

The song I'm the Sovereign, which was written, composed and sung by Huang Zitao combines all these elements.

I'm the Sovereign expresses strong emotions, the lyrics address Huang Zitao's ambition, resilience, combativeness and bravado when faced with criticism.

Acting

In January 2015, Zitao was cast in his first movie role [17] as William in the Chinese film ''You Are My Sunshine '' starring Huang Xiaoming and Yang Mi. The movie was released on May 1, 2015.[35]

Aside from creating music, Zitao has expressed his desire to promote martial arts in China[36] His wish is to become a martial arts and action movie star.[37]

Zitao is widely recognized as a martial artist. During his time in South Korea he continued training under well-known martial artist Bruce Khan,[37] who has choreographed actions scenes in movies like The Medallion, with Jackie Chan.

Zitao was confirmed as one of the supporting characters in Jackie Chan's upcoming movie, Railroad Tigers[38][39] directed by Ding Sheng. In the film Zitao, who performed his own stunts, will fight alongside Jackie Chan.[40] The action movie is expected to be released in October 2016.[41]

In December 2015, it was announced that Zitao is going to be the male lead in the movie Edge of Innocence.[42] He will be acting alongside actress Yang Caiyu as the female lead. The movie was filmed in Taiwan and it is based on a novel from Japanese mystery writer Soji Shimada.[43] Summer Portrait of a 19 year Old. The movie is expected to be released in August 2016.

Huang Zitao was also confirmed as the lead character in director Gao Xixi movie The Game Changer,[44] inspired by the Chinese TV series The Bund[45][46] Gao Xixi's said that he was prompted to cast Zitao immediately after watching video's of his Wushu routine. The Game Changer is Zitao's first leading role as a martial arts actor.[47]

Martial arts

Tao has received formal training in Wushu since the age of 5, he's learned to fight with the cudgel and the sword, he has participated and won competitions in Qingdao

his hometown he won 1st place for cudgel play, 2nd place for swordsmanship and 3rd place at the International championships of martial arts.[48] Aside from pursuing music, Huang Zitao expressed that he wanted to be a great martial arts actor.

During his time in Korea he continued training with Bruce Khan as his master, who confirmed that Huang Zitao was good enough to be an action movie star.[49] Huang Zitao performs Wushu Taolu routines on stage during concerts and as a guest in variety shows often. Michelle Yeoh, martial arts actress who guest starred along with Zitao in the variety show ''The Negotiator'', complimented Tao for his Wushu skill and wished for Tao to successfully pass down Chinese martial arts to the next generations.[50] Huang Zitao has expressed the desire to follow in the footsteps of Jackie Chan and promote martial arts.[5]

Television

On 7 September 2015, Zitao attended the press conference of his first reality-variety show "Charming Daddy" which was aired SZTV from November 28, 2015 - February 20, 2016. The show documented him and three other celebrities as they experienced parenthood by raising children of various ages for a month.[51]

On March 2, 2016 it was confirmed that Huang Zitao will be among the first celebrity cast in the first season of the Chinese Version of Law of the Jungle[52] that was recorded in Madagascar and Vanuatu with a guest appearance from Kim Byung-man, who he collaborated with in the Korean version in Solomon's island, the show will be aired on Anhui TV in May.[53]

On June 3, 2015, Huang Zitao was introduced as the celebrity endorser for the mobile game Almighty Team.[54] Zitao, who is known to be an avid player of video games, and a martial artist was selected due his match in style, image and value to the game. Huang Zitao has two major characters Twisted Fate and Garen modeled after him and they display his own unique martial arts movements[55]

In October 2015, Zitao along with Yang-Mi was announced as one of the celebrity endorser of the online game "I Am the Sovereign".[56] He assumed the role of the game's main character Mu Chen in the advertising campaign. Along with being the celebrity endorser for the game, Zitao was chosen to be the singer-songwriter and producer of the game's theme song, and music director for the game.[57]

Fashion brands

On September 19, 2015, Zitao attended the London Fashion Week after being invited by Versus Versace.[58] Before the show, Huang Zitao had taken part in the official Versus Versace SS16 collection's street style photo-shoot as the brands Chinese ambassador.[59]

On October 13, 2015, Zitao attended luxury ready to wear brand Ports 1961 Shanghai grand opening and Fall-Winter 2016 and sat front row at their fashion show and attended the after party, as a brand ambassador. He participated to their #Follow Me campaign, and did photo shoots and several interviews wearing Ports 1961 new collection.[60]

On November 5, 2015 Zitao attended the opening of luxe outerwear brand Moncler's first boutique in Singapore at the Ion Orchard. Armed with the news of Zitao being one of the celebrity brand ambassadors for the event, over 600 fans were there to greet him at the venue.[61] Zitao subsequently did a fashion photo shoot cover, spread and interview for Men's Folio magazine wearing pieces from Moncler's collection.[31]
